On Sunday afternoon, Interim Athletic Director named Bo Pelini as Head Coach of the Nebraska Football team. He said that their were 3 things that were imperitive in his search for a new coach: Leadership, Connection with Nebraska, and ability to motivate his team.
Bo was the candidate that best filled these expectations.
Pelini has had several stops as Defensive Coordinator, never as a head coach (other than the bowl win over Michigan at NU). He worked in San Francisco and Green Bay with the Defense. Since coming to the College game, he has been D-Coordinator at Nebraska, Oklahoma and most recently LSU.
What excites NU fans is his fire and drive. He is an exciting coach to watch on the sidelines. He is always one of the first coaches on the field after a good play and the players all love and respect him. He will be calling the Defense for the Huskers as well, which will be a welcome development.
Coach Pelini will be visiting with the current staff today and possibly into tomorrow before hitting the recruiting trail. Among the coaches that are expected to stay is Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson. He knows the team and can run the current offense without much modification. The Huskers have shown that they can put points on the board, but just couldn't keep others from putting up more, so I think that Shawn staying is a big move for Bo.
Bo mentioned bringing back some former staffers as assistants, but would wait until visiting with current staff before making any decisions.
This is a great day for Husker Football!
Go Big Red!!
