Great Debates

Even though I can???t settle the debate in my head about if the NCAA should go to a playoff system or continue to tweak the current BCS system, I love bowl season. Here are my top-10 games to watch (please note, these are games that interest me, not particularly the games with the most interest, buzz, or importance): 10. Alamo Bowl (Dec. 30) Penn State v. Texas A&M: Penn State is my favorite team, so this is a must watch for me. I am still disappointed that JoePa???s squad could not take advantage of having Ohio State at home and clip a wounded Michigan team to get into the national title picture, but this game against a program influx coming off a win of its archrival (Texas) is very winnable. 9. Independence Bowl (Dec. 31). Colorado v. Alabama: Slippery Nick (as Colin Cowherd calls him) gets to partially makeup for a disappointing first season by beating the Buffalos. Saban???s team better be ready, or life will hard for him and the program that spent $4 million per season on him this winter, spring, and summer. I am watching just for my last glimpse this season at the soap opera that has been Saban???s last year. 8. Holiday Bowl (Dec. 28) Arizona State v. Texas: This should be a great game match up of teams looking to make strong season-ending statements. Texas, for the first time in a longtime, was an afterthought in the Big 12, and Arizona State flirted with Pac-10 glory, but could not beat Oregon or USC when those teams were healthiest. I have only seen ASU when they have been overmatched this season, so it will be interesting to see the Sun Devils take on a team more around its level. Also, I have not seen Colt McCoy since Texas A&M pounded him in the last game of last season, so I am looking forward to seeing how he has progressed. 7. Capital One Bowl (Jan. 1) Florida v. Michigan: I always forget the SEC is on CBS, so I have not seen super sophomore Tim Tebow play much this season. I look forward to seeing him likely put on a clinic against the woeful Wolverines. The thing I do worry about for the Gators: Mike Hart. A healthy Hart will want to flush the bitter taste of his four loses at the hand of Ohio State from his mouth, which could be bad news for what should a confident Gator team. 6. Cotton Bowl (Jan. 1) Missouri v. Arkansas: Chase Daniel v. Darren McFadden. Two of the biggest names in the game in one bowl ??? I like it. If you have never seen McFadden run, make this appointment TV because it is a beautiful thing. Even though Missouri had New Orleans dreams, this has been a season worth remembering for the Tigers. Let???s see if Daniel and company can end the year on a positive note. 5. The Rose Bowl (Jan. 1): USC v. Illinois: Ron Zook deserves a lot of credit for the talent he has recruited to join a program he had to rebuild for almost nothing a few years ago. This game, unfortunately for Zook, should be just another day at the office for USC. Pete knows how to get his teams up for this game, so don???t expect them to underestimate a foe from a weaker conference. This is worth watching to see USC at full strength. 4. The Orange Bowl (Jan. 3): Virginia Tech. v. Kansas: This is a solid match up and should be close. Even though it might not be a marquee BCS game, it will feature two teams with great coaching that play hard. 3. The Fiesta Bowl (Jan. 2) Oklahoma v. West Virginia: Remember the last time the Sooners went to Arizona to take a team that had a lot of wrinkles on offense? Yup, Boise State. WVU will either come out with something to prove after blowing a chance at the big game, or be flat ??? I expect the former. Look for Pat White and Steve Slaton to put on another bowl show like they did during the duo???s freshman year. 2. The National Championship Game (Jan. 7). The Ohio State University v. LSU: P, I know what team you are pulling for here (LSU, for our readers), but I think this one will be pretty close. I am sick about hearing about Les Miles and his love of Michigan, but his Tigers should be favored against an OSU team that was routed by a SEC team in this game a year ago. This has been a sneaky OSU team, though, so don???t be surprised if the Vest pulls another one out of his, well, vest. 1. The Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1) Georgia v. Hawaii: I can???t wait for this game. I have followed the triumphs for the Warriors all year, and I am happy to see a 12-0 season did end in a BCS game. Now, Georgia is the better team, but Hawaii has a real chance if they do what they do best ??? throw it. If you have never seen Colt Brennan and company run the work of art that is their offense, you are in for a treat. The Warriors have some sneaky good wide receivers with great speed, so look don???t be surprised if this turns into a shootout. If Brennan is truly feeling it, this could be another big win for WAC teams everywhere.
