The Red Sox are going after Johan Santana, whom the Twins are consistently driving up the price for. They told the Sox they don't want Crisp, but they insist on Ellsbury. They demand two young pitchers, Jon Lester and Justin Masterson. That isn't it either. They also want the promising shortstop prospect, Jed Lowrie.
I know that Santana is the best pitcher in the game, but is Theo really willing to offer the most promising parts of our farm system? Ellsbury is a soon to be star, Lester is a skilled pitcher who managed to come back from lymphona, Masterson is a highly regarded prospect, as is Jed Lowrie. Also, Crisp isn't the starting centerfielder we wish we had, Ellsbury is. Therefore why give Ellsbury away? Lester will be a great pitcher in a few years. Masterson could be a great pitcher. And we have trouble at short with Julio Lugo not living up to expectations, so do we want to get rid of one of our best prospects who just happens to play that position?
This is definitely the Evil Empire in the making. Trading away our prospects, our home-grown talent, for a declining pitcher who doesn't perform in Fenway. Almost all of Santana's stats are declining and he has been a workhorse for a few years. We are trading improving players for one declining pitcher. Santana's huge contract will drive up what Beckett is demanding. Santana isn't usually a joker in the clubhouse and that will hurt our team chemistry. Buccholz and Ellsbury certainly haven't affected our chemistry for the worst. This trade would be a disgrace to our organization because our owner, our owner, was the person who first called the Yankees the Evil Empire. Now everyone is saying "look at the pot calling the kettle black". And it's true, I hate it, but it's true.
On the other hand, there is Dan Haren. Haren is younger than Santana and his stats aren't declining like Santana's are. Do you think the A's will demand as much for Haren as the Twins have with Santana? Nope. We could get Haren for much less and maybe we wouldn't have to trade Buccholz and Ellsbury. Keeping both of them and getting Haren would be a huge plus. To tell you the trusth, I would rather get neither of these guys than getting Santana for that trade. Also, Santana is going to be in free agency next year! Hello? Theo, you are great and I admire you and applaud you for everything you've done for the Sox, but don't you think this is a little much? I do.
