The idea for this blog came from a throwdown between "The_K1NG" and "Sooner in WA" on how a playoff system would have just as many problems as the BCS.  Here's the link:  http://fannation.com/throwdowns/show/84243

"The_KING" and the makers or whatever you call them of the BCS bowls don't understand that yes, they make a ton of money on the games now, but they'd make so much more money if they milk the cow as much as they can to make even more money.  If it's all about money for them, then they should've made a playoff system years ago.

If a playoff system creates so many "problems", then how come the NFL postseason and March Madness are so successful, both money wise and when it comes to the # of fans?  With every problem comes a solution, and NCAA football could possibly make a run at college basketball for the most popular college sport in years to come if it creates some kind of postseason tournament and finds solutions to the problems with it.

Also, if a playoff system would create as many problems as the BCS and the BCS is so successful, then you can't help but think that the playoff system would be successful if you just give it time.

"The_KING" brought up how the season would be a lot longer, depending on how many teams are put into the system, which is a good point.  But if there were two tournaments, like in NCAA basketball, there wouldn't be such a long season.

I guess this is where the figure of speech 'cash cow' came from? LQTM

you made some good points Larry B, but it's not so much the selecting of the bowls as it is the possibility of any unlikely team to compete for the national championship. There's no such thing as the George Mason of college football. No one pretty much outside of the BCS top 5 can have a chance at the title. NCAA basketball does two things that NCAA football does not: it captures the fans, and a ton of money as a result of that. This is all because of the tournament in basketball.
