We may not like all the BCS match-ups and there are cases to be made for several teams and no matter how well or how poorly things may fall into place, there will always be someone left out, somebody considered overrated and unworthy of a BCS spot.
That being said, everyone's remedy is a playoff and count me as one of those intrigued by that possibility, but chances are we may never see one...at least not in the near future.
So we're stuck with this system, which seems to only work by accident. Although this year, I'm not sure if the BCS is the reason for this mess of a season. Nobody seemed to want to play for the title and LSU and Ohio State, who were left for dead after losses to Arkansas and Illinois, respectively, are now playing for the title.
My biggest problem with the BCS this year is the snubbing of Missouri. I'm not sure how Kansas, who had a great season, gets in even though their only loss was to Missouri. I know Kansas had only one loss and Missouri lost to Oklahoma twice, but one of the losses came in the Big 12 title game. Also, the inclusion of Illinois was a bit odd, with three losses, but I don't think Illinois was put in at the expense of Missouri because as I understand it, you cannot have more than two teams from one conference in the BCS, so Oklahoma got the automatic big from the Big 12, making Kansas an at-large team.
I am real excited about seeing Hawaii play in a BCS bowl game and get a chance to not only show off their terriffic offense, but a shot to prove they can play with the big boys, like Boise State did last year.
Another story heating up is the Johan Santana trade that hasn't been...
When the offseason started, I thought the Twins would hold onto him until the July 31 deadline, but I think this could be the kind of deal that heats up, cools down and then heats up again until something is finally done. It reminds me a little bit of the Randy Johnson deal to the Yankees a couple of years ago. One day he was headed to the Bronx and the next the deal was dead, then another team jumped into the mix, then dropped out, then Arizona was going to keep him...then he was headed to the Yankees again...etc., etc., etc...
The other frustrating part of following this story is since there are so many rumors floating around each day, you get different media outlets reporting different things from different "unnamed sources" and you never know who to believe.
I liked the Tigers' move to get Willis and Cabrera though. I do think Willis is slightly overrated, but if they do keep him, which now there are rumors they may not, he should be able to fit into that rotation nicely...too bad he won't get many chances to hit. As far as Cabrera, he may not be long for third base and has had his problems with staying shape, but there is no doubt he can absolutely rake. Big ball park or not, you should be able to pencil him in for .320, 30, 110..easily.
