I was looking over the series' points for Truck, Nationwide, and Cup and got to wondering about the new points system My question "Is it working?"

Here are a few things that stand out for me:

Cup - 10 drivers are currently within 100 points of first place Carl Edwards. The top 31 drivers have run all 20 races this season. 5 drivers have run in 10 or more race and acumilated 0 point having declared in another series, one of these drivers (Joe Nemecheck) has run all 20 Cup races. The highest rookie is Andy Lally in 33rd with 17 starts.

Trucks - 12 drivers are within 100 points of first place Johnny Sauter. The top 18 drivers have run all 13 races. No driver has run all 13 races and acumilated 0 points having declared in another series. The highest rookie is Cole Whitt in 5th with 13 starts.

Nationwide - 5 drivers are within 100 points of first place Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The top 10 drivers have run all 21 races.  Trevor Bayne is 11th in points after 16 races, 248 points out of first palce, and 73 behind 10th. Banye is higher in points then 5 drivers who have run all 21 races. Carl Edwards and Brad K. have run 20 out of 21 races and acumilated 0 points. The highest rookie is Timmy Hill in 17th with 20 starts.

Danica is 27th in points 562 out of first with 6 starts. Spin-out Sam Hornish is the only driver with less than 10 starts ahead of her in 25th. She is also ahead of 7 other drivers with more then 10 starts.

I know there is still a lot of racing until the end of the season, and the Chase will ultimately determine the Cup champion, but do you see the new points system as working or is it too soon to tell? Is this a valid observation at this point in the season or just the inate ramblings of a madman....again?

The only thing I can take away from these numbers is that in Truck you have a rookie in 5th and nationwide at 17th. To me, that's a good thing.

Cousin Carl has made his decision...

I used to be good at Math, then they changed it.

Awww, the math here is pretty easy. Dem that runs well gets da prize. LOL

I absolutely believe it's working. It has put the focus on winning races and that's why we watch. The strategy now with the two tire/four tire stops and the gas mileage show that the win is paramount.

guess another way to look at Danica points, is to compare to the other two JR drivers ....

Aric Almirola ... 5th, with 21 starts, 4 top 5, 11 top 10, 671 points ... 31.95 avg ...
Josh Wise ... 14th, with 19 starts, 2 top 10, 462 points, ... 24.31 avg ..
Danica ... 27t h with 6 starts, 1 top 5, 3 top 10, 178 points,.... 29.666 avg ...

or if the same avg for all 21 races = 623 points, which would be 8th ahead of Stevie Wallace ...

Fun with STATS ;)

August 4, 2011  04:06 PM ET

**Note Josh Wise is a little off, cause when Danica is in the #7 JR Chev ... he drives the #39 Go Green Racing FORD which is a low buget team ...

August 4, 2011  04:38 PM ET

this turn out Harder then i think it was going to be ;( ... for Josh Wise ...

it was 8 races in the #39 ... 180 points, 22.5 avg ...
was 11 races in the #7 .... 282 points, 25.63 avg ...

cause for the #7 itwas JR at Tall, Ron Fellows at Road Amer, Kasey Kahne at Kent, New Hamp, with Will Kimmel III in the #39 at Kentucky, and Matt Fraham in #39 at New Hamp.

I think the Jr. cars are top notch equipment, when McMurray ran some races last year he was doing well with Jr. cars. Looking at your stats, Almirola has half his starts in the Top 10 and Danica does also. That's a decent showing.

IF NASCAR was trying to get the CUP drivers out of NationWide by get 00 points ...

its not working as only 3 of 21 races have been WON by NationWide Point Drivers ...

Good to cousin Carl signed with Rousch and Ford.
I would have hated to see him go to Gibbs and Toyota.
Joey must be breathing a little better thou not out of the woods yet

I don't think they wanted the Cup guys out as that's what draws the fans. They just wanted to give the Nationwide drivers a fair shot at the title. It makes sense.

"They" say having Cup drivers in the NW races is the only way to draw a crowd, but Trucks seem to do well with far fewer Cup guys.

I think what most fans don't realize is that at any given NW race the track doesn't typically offer all their seats for sale. Even with Cup support, and the boom of the 90's-00's areas of stands like the back stretch were empty because those tickets weren't being offered for sale. So the "half empty" stands might actually have been a sellout.

Roush: Ford Contributed Incentives, Stock To Edwards' Contract
Roush Fenway Racing owner Jack Roush offered details today on Ford Motor Company???s contribution to the contract package agreed to today by Carl Edwards.

???Ford stepped forward and offered Carl an incentive program,??? said Roush to Sirius XM NASCAR Radio???s Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody. ???They also offered up a Ford stock program that will come to fruition after the third year of his contract is complete.???

Roush admitted that there is ???still some work to do??? on sponsorship for 2012; both for Edwards and other members of the Roush Fenway Racing stable. ???The 3M package for Greg Biffle is done and discussions are ongoing for Matt Kenseth and David Ragan," he said. "We can see our way more than 50% through Carl???s program, right now, but the day is past when you can rely on one sponsor to pay the full ticket for any driver. Sponsors like that are fewer and farther between than they were even a few years ago, but we will continue to work hard to put these various packages together.???

Re: points system.......I agree with JK's comment # 4....I like the new system.

Re: points for one series only........Like that too.

Re: Chase....not sure yet how I will feel about 11th and 12th when Chase starts.

Re: Carl........one word ....YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
All my hopes and prayers that he would not become a Gibby have paid off.......THANK YOU CARL for staying where you are......could never see you with Kyle and Dummy.

Good Morning to all, if they will leave the point system alone, all will be OK, but the Geru's at Nascar NEVER leave anything that works alone, glad Carl stayed where he's at, if foe anything to keep Kenseth in line. LOL,, have a great day everyone, try to stay cool.
