15. Matt Forte, Tulane: Forte has been having a great year, but he has flown under the radar because he has played for a very bad team. Tulane only won 4 games this season, but the 2127 yards are still good enough for him to be considered as one of the top 15 players of this season. He tore apart SMU and Southeastern Louisiana for a combined 645 yards and 9 TDs.
14. Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois: Mendenhall is the main reason why Illinois is in a BCS Bowl. Not Ron Zook. Not Juice Williams. Not J Leman. Mendenhall wasn't even considered for the Doak Walker Award, which is crazy. His 1526 rushing yards puts him at seventh in the nation in rushing. Mendenhall also had 259 receiving yards on 29 catches. He can do it all.
13. Todd Reesing, Kansas: Reesing ran the high-powered Kansas offense this season. Against Nebraska, Reesing threw for 6 touchdown passes and 354 yards. Reesing led one of the most fearsome offenses in the country. Reesing led the Kansas Jayhawks to the Orange Bowl as an at-large. The one-loss Jayhawks should have a Heisman candidate.
12. Knowshon Moreno, Georgia: Knowshon Moreno is the second leading freshman runner in Georgia history. He is the leading freshman runner who is mortal in Georgia history. No one will ever touch Herschel Walker, but Moreno got pretty close. The freshman stud ran for 1273 yards in 12 games. For a freshman who wasn't expected to get many carries at the beginning of the year, that's amazing.
11. Pat White, West Virginia: If it weren't for a thumb injury, we would be talking about how much West Virginia would beat Ohio State by, not LSU. West Virginia showed how much it relies on White when its offense died when he was out in two games, the two losses for West Virginia. He may be ranked higher by some, but the Pitt game really left me with a sour taste in my mouth.
10. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma: Sam Bradford has had an amazing season. No one really knew what Oklahoma was going to do at the beginning of the year. The Sooners were using their fourth QB in four years. Changes like that are not welcome by most schools, but Oklahoma never truly missed a beat. They are going to the Fiesta Bowl again, and Bradford is the main reason why.
9. Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech: Although Bradford and Moreno are amazing, Crabtree is the best freshman in the country. He has broken all of the freshmen receiving records, and the all-time records are not far behind. Crabtree is a redshirt freshman, and next year should be his last in Lubbock. He may be the top pick for next season, and he may be a favorite for the Heisman next season even though he played in a pass-happy offense.
8. James Laurinaitis, Ohio State: Laurinaitis isn't breaking any records, but he is the best player on the number one team in the country. That automatically makes you a contender for the Heisman. Boeckman is not good enough yet to be the Heisman contender from this team. Beanie Wells has been too inconsistent. Vernon Gholston was unknown at the beginning of the year.
7. Glenn Dorsey, LSU: Dorsey is the best defensive player in the country in a long time. He has the speed to be in the backfield at the snap, and he has the tackling ability to never let one runner get through him. His size is another reason he is the best pro prospect in the country right now.
6. Colt Brennan, Hawaii: I don't like pass happy offenses. I like the option. I like the spread. College football is inherently a running game. Pass happy offenses do not impress me. However, there is no denying that we are watching history in Colt Brennan. He always seems to find the open man, which I think is a great accomplishment no matter what offense you play in. He is a pretty good QB who deserves to be a finalist.
5. Chase Daniel, Missouri: Daniel has flown under the radar all year. Missouri was a team no one wanted in the championship outside of Columbia, but Daniel has put up great stats for a team that was one win away from the national championship. The Tigers were an ugly team. They didn't run the spread. They didn't have a superstar. They weren't a traditional power. However, Daniel is a Heisman finalist for a good reason. He's been amazing.
4. Darren McFadden, Arkansas: Darren McFadden was the favorite to win the Heisman coming into this year. It isn't that he tripped up. It's just that there have been some better than him. The Razorbacks struggled a bit in big games, which may have cost McFadden a Heisman. McFadden is a great playmaker, probably the best in the country. McFadden should have won the Heisman last year, but he won't win it this year.
3. Tim Tebow, Florida: Yes, the almighty Tebow is third on my list. I can't trust a guy who doesn't have the best stats in the nation or didn't play on the best team on the nation. That is normally the parameters for being the Heisman winner. He has put up great stats, but there is one player who has done better.
2. Dennis Dixon, Oregon: Dixon is definitely the MVP of college football. Oregon was the best team in the nation when he was playing, and they were bad without him. The Ducks destroyed Michigan and beat USC soundly. Oregon did not play an easy schedule by any means. Dixon was the best QB in the country before he tore up his knee. His injury should have solidified him as a top 3 player.
And now, the Heisman winner.
Drum roll, please
*drum rolling*
*still drum rolling*
Drum roll
Rolling, rolling
Still rolling
Now, it's finished
1. Kevin Smith, UCF: Yes, a mid-major running back is the best player in the country. Kevin Smith is second all-time in rushing yards. Barry Sanders is the only one to rush for more yards in a season. We are watching one of the best college running backs in history, but he wasn't even mentioned for the Heisman. He's not a finalist, which is highway robbery. No one can even say that what Smith is doing is not impressive. Smith destroyed both North Carolina State and Texas. Smith will be an amazing pro back. He is insanely consistent. He only had one game under 100 yards, which was against USF. That was also his only game without a touchdown. What he is doing should be recognized for what it's worth. He is making history, and should be hoisting the Heisman Trophy tomorrow night. It's sad that he won't get the chance to win the Heisman this year. I'm hoping he comes back next year and breaks Sanders' record and brings home his deserved Heisman. Tebow will probably win the Heisman, but he really shouldn't. Smith is the real deal, and when he is embarrassing defenses on Sundays, people will remember how he was robbed in 2007.
