" There is nobody taking profits from what we make at Alabama or any of these schools here and putting it in their pockets..is not a business...is a revenue producing .....that is all reinvested in the university and athletic department ......nobody is making money......we get paid salaries...."
That was a quote from Alabama's coach Nick Saban given in the ESPN program Outside the Lines.
The program put together a panel of coaches, media personalities and college administrators to discuss a college "pay to play" scenario.
My dear friends, I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but even I understand the quote "......nobody is making money......we get paid salaries" is one of the silliest quote of the year, sorry Alabama, Mr. Saban needs to understand that he is making a profit from the school, so are his assistant coaches, they are all getting paid by the school.
If Mr. Saban's position is that a student athletes should not make any money because the school is not making a profit from them, well sir, just take a look at your paycheck.
Can we agree on that ?
Here is Mr. Saban's- non profit contract:
Per terms of the original deal, Saban salary is set to increase each year during the next four years. He made $3,750,000 during the 2008 season, with incentives pushing the total past $4 million. He is scheduled to earn $3.9 million this season, $4.1 million in 2010, $4.15 million the following year and $4.2 million in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Lordy, Lordy we can't make this stuff up folks...profit indeed.
As always this is just a fans opinion and from what I understand everybody as one and I thank God for that.
Enough said.

Have you ever had an accounting class?
Profit = Revenue - Expenses.
Salaries are University expenses.
Saban is saying the Universities operate under a non-profit, balance budget where revenue = expenses and profit is zero.
Saban has a high salary, lots of benefits.. but Saban, as an employee and not a organization/corporation, cannot make a "profit".

Thank you for the class but he does personally profit from the school..if not, well then the athletes should also benefit as part of the expanse so it would not ne pay for play ..hey we just solved the problem...thanks again

You're arguing apples and oranges. Of course he pesonally "profits" but he was talking in a sense of not for profit organizations and for profit organizations. There's a difference and deliberately trying to find fault with him by arguing a different argument does not make you look like you know what you're talking about.
If you want to argue like you just did, then you could say every athlete gets a profit by getting their tution paid. That's a benefit that can be put in monetary terms as well.

I worked with some accountents and I posted the question to them.. and yes you are right....but I still find the statament silly, beouse he made it sound like they are not benefiting from the money, but the are, and I'm sure he can see that everytime he goes to the bank...can we agree on that...

Yes, we can agree he benefits. But the way you're using profit is not the way he's using profit. He's using in the strict accounting sense. You're using it in a very general sense.

Fair enough, but is on him to explain what he meant (in a clear manner)...we can at least agree on that...actually I was not the only one who got that impression, there was another panelist who was thinking along the same lines.
