What is a "sport" what makes it so important?
Here is MY definition:
Sport MUST contain EACH ELEMENT BELOW
A. You must be able to stop the other player from winning
- Golf is NOT a sport- no matter what I do I cannot stop the other player from winning- If I shoot a 70 the other player gets a 69 and he wins- If I shoot a 68 do I win? Not if he shoots a 68 - and there is NOT a DANG thing I can do about it. Randy Quaid excepted
- In football, baseball even in poker I can prevent him from winning if I out play him- in Golf- it is me vs the course- and whomever does better at it wins an event.
B. There must be an absolute beginning and end to said event.
Here Poker fails as it can last one hand or it can last forever. NASCAR Passes as there is a signified number of laps. Ice Skating passes here as well as there is a Time limit. Interestingly, the Dunk contest fails (some years) as there is no time limit or limit on number of attempts.
C. Must be a way to determine a fair and obvious winner, regardless or elements, bias, Fame or scenario.
Scoreboard plain and simple- If I have 200 and you have 199 then you lose- unless it's golf then I lose (and suck at it)
All Judged events here fail- as does boxing if Don King is involved.
That's it- plain and simple That is the difference between "game" / "skill" or REAL SPORT - none of this breaking a sweat, none of this my kids/mom/dog/gerbil can do it nonsence.
