I don't know why this season is making me so excited, but it is. I honestly have not been this pumped up for a Duke team this much since Luol Deng came to Duke for a year (Idk, I've met him before, so it really got me into Duke). However, the players this year have got me exctied. Alot of young talent. I'm just going to delve into the roster.
#21 DeMarcus Nelson- The lone senior on the team, and a huge part of it. Nelson brings a slasher type player into the game, and then mixes it with great defense, druablilty, and leadership. He's a great part of the team and it will be sad to see him go.
#5 Martynas Pocius- He brought alot of energy into the game in the limited time he recieved. He's down with an injury- and it will hurt Duke a little. Good defensive player.
#3 Greg Paulus- Our starting point guard, and glad for it. He's matured over the pass two years. He is making many less bad decisions then he was previous seasons. What I love about him is 2 things. The first is his great ability to dish the ball and find the open guy. The second is his new finding of an effective 3 point shot. It adds a whole new element to his game, and finally forces defenders to play him up around the arc.
#14 David McClure- He's a good defender, and even better, a great rebounder. He's very versatile and can move into different positions as needed. Not the greatest offensive threat, but he brings alot to this team.
#41 Jordan Davidson- Another player I've seen play in high school Very limited minutes, but his work ethic is unmatched. He walked onto Duke- which is hard enough to do. Even more impressive- he's kept his spot every year of college.
#55 Brian Zoubek- Zeus brings a different element to the game. A 7'1" big man in a predominately smaller, faster guard type team. He's doing better than last year- and improved his footwork GREATLY (thank God). Decent rebounder and scorer. If he became more physical, he would be one of the better big men in the country.
#42 Lance Thomas- Another one of those "utility" players. He, like Zeus, brings a different element to the game, but not in the same way. He's a slasher, but a great defender and rebounder. He beings alot to this team, and is a good player coming off the bench.
#30 Jon Scheyer- This kid doesn't look like a basketball player at all. However, he's managed to surprise me greatly. A great shooter as well as good at everything else. He will do anything that's needed in him- and I love that in a player.
#51 Steve Johnson- Another walk-on with very limited playing time. He's a good athlete (participates on the Track and Field team as well).
#15 Gerald Henderson- Henderson brings alot to this Duke team. He's energetic a true slasher. he creates his own shots and forces you to defend him anywhere on the court. Not only that, but his great defense and rebounding put him up as one of the best and most versatile on this team. On a side note, I got to see Henderson and Wade Ellington of North Carolina play on the same team in high school. I was salivating.
Freshmen- Note: All of these guys, well, are amazing
#12 Kyle Singler- As a true freshman, he worked his way into the starting lineup. He brings great energy, passing, and shooting- in a big man's body. If he became stronger, he would be a force to be reckoned with. However, I'm happy where he's at for the time being- among the elite freshmen.
#20 Taylor King- My favorite player on this whole Duke team. He is an absolute true shooter. His shots get the crowd into the game every time because, most of the time, he's jacking them up from 3. High energy also, and a great offensive player. He will be a real special player.
#2 Nolan Smith- Smith comes in as a great freshmen. Quick hands make him great on defense- and again his quickness on offense makes him a great point guard. He runs the court the whole time, constantly grabbing those loose balls and doing everything he can to win. Great player already.
