For this week's DP&S blog I thought I'd do something different. I don't plan on doing this often, but this definitely won't be my last profile of an artist.
The artist I'm going to focus on tonight is an artist that the vast majority of you haven't heard of. He didn't have many songs on the radio. He had a few top 10 singles, but his most famous work was made famous by other artists.
To me this guy is one of the most underrated singers and songwriters in Country music history.
A lot of guys wouldn't have careers if it weren't for guys like him writing their songs.
The artist featured tonight is Rhett Akins.
Rhett has written songs for Blake Shelton, Justin Moore, Josh Turner, Brooks and Dunn and several others.
I would love feedback. Please leave a comment.
Don't Get Me Started
I thought I'd start with the only number one of his career as a singer. It only stayed number one for week when Carried Away by George Strait bumped it off, but this is a great song. It's about the emotions of falling in love for the first time, and how he can talk about the night he met his wife all ight long.
That Ain't My Truck
This is probably his most popular song as a solo artist. It peaked at number 3 on the charts, but most consider this his signature song. Don't let the title of the song fool you. It's a great song. Losingout on a girl to another man, and finding out by seeing the other guy's truck in her drive way.
If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away
If you've listened to a Country station the last 5 months, chances are you've heard this song, except the singer was Justin Moore. Justin Moore took this song to number one. This is one of the many examples of other artists having better luck with Rhett's songs tha Rhett. Personally, this is my favorite song Rhett has ever written.
Take a Back Road
A live version is the only version I could find, but I really like this video. It's like a jam session. This is a current single by Rodney Atkins. Rhett never realeased this song for himself, but he wrote it, and he's getting royalties off of it. Tis song is about how taking a back road can relieve the stress of the day, and make you feel at peace.
Fast forward to about the 1:50 mark unless you wanna her the back story of the song. I think this was from the same concert a the previous video I posted. Blake Shelton took this song to number 1 after Rhett wrote it for him. This is a sort of fun love song. Personally, I think it's a shame Rhett didn't release this for imself, because his voice is 10x better than Blake Shelton's
All About Tonight
Another song he wrote for Blake Shelton that Blake took to number one. Two of Blake Shelton's last 3 number one hits have been writen by Rhett Akins. This song is a fun song to party to. The title pretty much says it all. This song s about a good time.
And last, but not least,
Kiss My Country Ass
I thought about not including this one, but after thinking about it, this song is the only reason most people my age and young know who Rhett Akins is. This song has a pretty big following down here in Dixie. Some call it the redneck anthem. I like this song, it gets me pumped up, and my friend that fight MMA now walks to the ring to this song.
I hope you enjoyed this, and hopefully some of you are Rhett Akins fans.
