It's 888 Miles to Chicago...

Man, did anyone else chuckle a little when the Bears stuck it to the Bills?  When Dick "How do I keep getting work" Jauron came to town with his "upstart Bills"...and he ran straight into the brick wall that is Lovie's well oiled machine...didn't you feel a little vindication for Jauron's mismanagement of the Monsters of the Midway?

Well, I did.  I laughed really hard when I read the recap on ESPN, and it mentioned that under Jauron the Bears offense had been exremely stagnant, and that it must of surprised him to see such a high flying group wearing orange and blue.  Um, except it shouldn't.  The problem with the Bears offense had been that Jauron handpicked the biggest bone head (John "What's a forward pass" Shoop) to game plan for him.  Has there been a worse offensive coordinator?  Okay, Tom Walsh in Oakland is trying really hard to meet Shoop's lofty goals.  But man, it was just pathetic.

What really excites me about this season, is that we're matching the game plan of the '85 season.  I know, I know, every Bears fan points back to that team...let me first apologize for referring to them yet again.  And then let me say this...

The reason every Bears fan points to 85, is because not only was that the only Super Bowl this proud franchise has ever won, but it was just such a magical year.  The city came alive like never before.  Chicago is always, and will always be a football town.  It just fits the people to a T.  The Bulls rented the place for the '90s, because of a certain 6'6" bald messiah, and the Sox had their day in the sun last year, and the Cubs, if they could ever pull their head out of their ass, would make some noise if they could win the big one...but really, the Bears are what defines Chicago.  It's part of who everyone of us identifies with.  The whole "Da Bears" SNL skit...even though it was poking fun at us, we love it.  Football is the life blood of Chicago.  Why?  Becuase the Bears have always been a perfect reflection of Chicago...hard working, hard hitting, nothing flashy, just grind it out, get the job done team...and that's Chicago.  It's not the mecca that New York is...and it's not all flash like LA...it's a Blue collar city through and through.

And so, everyone of us hangs our hat on that '85 team, becuase they won that way.  Their Defense was a thing of beauty.  Always attacking, always hitting hard, never stopping.  The eyes of Singletary, the MANY knee surgeries of Hampton and McMicheal, the shear joy of the Fridge, the whirlwind of Dent, and smarts of Fencick...all brought together by the sheer genuis of Buddy Ryan.  Balance that with an Offense that feature the greatest RB of all-time, and the craziest QB...and you had a Chicago team.  Plus, look around, at the time Chicago was owner of 0 championships in the last 40 years at the time.  There was nothing...and so to have a team that so dominated the sport, made us fall in love like never before....and we still speak longingly of that team because it was so good.  15-1...and then just destroyed everyone in the playoffs.  It was a complete and total domination for a city that had never dominated at anything.  And that's why we love '85.

Now, back to my original thought....

This team truly reminds me of the '85 team...

And Amazing, attacking Defense...

A set of Linebackers that rank among the best in the league...

1 steady CB (Frazier and Vasher) and one Boom or Bust CB (Richardson and Tillman)...

A heady, hard hitting Safety...

And an Offense that was opprotunistic and could score whenever it needed...

lead by an injury prone QB (McMahon and Grossman)

With a capable, steady backup (Fuller and Griese)

A do it all RB (Payton and Jones)...although te '85 version was out of this world...

A speedy, big play WR (Gault and Berrian)...

An O-Line that had been together for awhile, and knew how to knock people on their butts...

Plus a first time head coach from a winning lineage, a Defensive genuis that will probably be gone after the year...

All we need now, is a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl Trophy....
