Earlier today, I wrote a fanmail to the Community asking for ideas on a blog.  One of the ideas that I got was about relegation and the MLS.  Now, I have very strong feelings about relegation and what the United States should do with it.  I honestly feel that the MLS is in no place to even think about it right now.  But I'll take you through two scenarios.

1. The MLS merges with the United Soccer League to form the United States Soccer League or USSL.  In that league there would be two divisions (at least to start with), the First or Premier Division, and then the Second or Secondary Division.  In the First Division, there would be 18-20 teams.  The teams would be decided by a board or committee and would distributed evenly throughout the country according to where the most soccer fans are.  In the Second Division, there would be another 18-20 teams.  Those teams would be chosen by a board and would also be distributed evenly across the States.  Each year, the bottom three teams in the Premier Division would be relegated to the Second Division.  Then the top 2 teams in the Second Division would be promoted to the Premier.  Then, the Promotion playoffs would take place.  The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th placed teams would square off in a tourney.  The team that came out on top of the single-elimination tourney would be in the Premier Division, and the other three teams would get a thank you card and good luck next season.

2. If it was up to me, this is what I would do.  Due to the simple fact that the United States is so much different than the rest of the sport's world, MLS should stay "Americanized".  That means that the league should be set up similar to the other American sports.  So in other words, I say we should just take 18-20 teams and keep them in the league.  I would prefer a couple teams down south, just to keep things evenly distributed and a couple Midwestern teams.  From there, I say keep the conference system.  The top 2 teams from each conference go to the playoffs, while the next 4 teams, regardless of conference go on to the playoffs.

So, in short, I say keep Major League Soccer "Americanized".  You will do this by keeping the playoff system, keeping the conferences, and keeping the MLS Superdraft.  The draft just simply gives fans of other sports something to relate to.  Well, I did my best job explaining myself.  Let me hear what you have to say about MLS expansion.  So do you agree or disagree with me?
