Today is the second part of a series that could end up lasting a long time. To give people not from Georgia with some background I will tell you what teams we have that way we don't name the new MLS team with something that is already represented in the state. First, I'll tell you about Atlanta. They have the Braves of the National League, the over-500 Hawks in the NBA (yes, finally), the lowly Falcons of the NFL, the Thrashers of the NHL, the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League, the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech, and the Silverbacks of the USL. A few more important teams are outside of Atlanta. Like the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Southern Eagles. I could go on and on with college names, but I won't.
But to name a team, you should know a little about the states birds, and flowers and such so here is a chart from Wikipedia that might help.
Here is a list of the state symbols:
State tree: Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)
State bird: brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum)
State flower: Cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata)
State game bird: Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus)
State wildflower: Azalea (Rhododendron spp.)
State fruit: peach (Prunus persica)
State fish: Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides)
State marine mammal: Right whale
State reptile: Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus)
State amphibian: green tree frog (Hyla cinerea)
State possum: Pogo possum
State insect: Honey bee (Apis mellifera)
State butterfly: eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)
State mineral: Staurolite
State seashell: Knobbed whelk (Busycon carica)
State gem: quartz
State crop: peanut
State vegetable: Vidalia sweet onion
State fossil: the shark tooth
Most of these probably won't help, but they may. So, now it is your turn to voice your opinion. Should the name come from something inside the state or should we just make up a name? You decide. I will take the best 3 ideas and put them on a poll on the FanNation Community for you to vote on. Thanks for your time and participation.
