1st Edition of DJ/Joe Dew Bball Talk

Joe Dew:Hello fannation and djroxalot. Myself and DJ are going to start an NBA focused blog that will appear, weekly, or that is the goal here on NBA Fanz. It will run similar to Pardon the Interruption because Dj and myself are passionate about the NBA and don't always see eye to eye on the topics at hand, which makes for an interesting read. Rest assured it will be knowledgeable and wildly entraining. So lets get this going.

Joe Dew: Topics at hand, I was thinking what trades this offseason impressed you most and how so. I really like the Cavaliers acquiring Shaq. Not only did they unload an uhhappy Ben Wallace and Sasha but they brought in a body to help match up with D Howard since he destroyed the Cavs in the Eastern Finals last year. Shaq should really help take away the double teams that Lebron receives and then even though Shaq is older he still commands a double team in the paint. He can still score, he proved it last year when he was an All Star in Phoenix. I also like the pickup of Jamario Moon not as much a threat as Rasheed Wallace but still he gives athleticism and can jump. Leon Powe is a what if for me?

DJ: Good to TD with another passionate NBA fan like Joe does the Dew.

DJ: To me, the Spurs acquiring Richard Jefferson gives them a legit shot at dethroning the NBA and Western Conference champs, the Lakers. They also added some other pieces but RJ gives them a solid scoring option at SF over the wheelchair bound Bruce Bowen. RJ isnt the defensive presence Bowen is but he gives them a player that score when the offense bogs down and TD, Ginobili (when healthy) and Parker are struggling. Which happened a lot last year, more so than in past seasons.

DJ: I agree with you to a certain degree on Shaq. The Cavs should give the Celtics all they can handle in the East. Not totally sold on VC in Orlando since he is more of a scorer and not the facilitator Turk was. But Shaq gives the Cavs a roadblock for Howard since Howard has virtually no back to the basket game. Shaq may not be the defender he once was but is still a 7-foot, 350 presence in the paint. And he held his own against Howard last year and is a better player (still) than Bynum (and Gasol), Howard's opponent in the NBA finals.

Joe: I am surprised to see you enjoying the Richard Jefferson pick up since it makes your Lakers have a good foe in the West. I think the Spurs are the 2^nd best team in the west and was really surprised the Bulls beat them last week. I think if they are healthy in the post season they will give the Lakers a run for their money, the Spurs don't take the regular season to serious. A deal that we haven't talked about yet is Ron Artest. I think it's a high risk move because they won a ring with Trevor Ariza but decided to go with Artest. I mean why mess up a good thing. But really the risk is worth it for the Lakers because they still have Kobe, Odom, and Fisher but if Artest doesn't have a mental breakdown they will be better. Dennis Rodman was way worse and Phil Jackson spoon fed him.

Joe:I think the Blazers are one of those teams that could either be really good or just mediocre. Meaning Greg Oden, he is the big what if for the Blazers this season. I think Greg Oden is the key to the blazers success this season, not Andre Miller which was the Free Agent acquisition this offseason.

DJ: I am not a big fan of the Turk signing by the Raptors. What are your thoughts specifically on the Raptors.

DJ: Hey Joe, I love my Lakers but I recognize a challenge when I see it. And the Spurs definitely provide a challenge to the Lake Show.

DJ:The Lakers upgraded themselves. Ariza is a nice player but will he ever be an Artest type? I have serious doubts if he can ever be more than a 10-12ppg player that plays defense like Bruce Bowen.

DJ:Risk a good thing with Ron? Phil managed another major headcase in Dennis. How did that turn out? Pretty good if you ask me. The Blazers are excellent but in the West I just dont see them being a major threat just yet. Just my opinion, they need another 20ppg scorer to go next to Roy.

The Raps? 8th seed maybe. If Arenas gets hurt again and the Wizards lose a lot of players to injury. The Wizards are a team to watch out for. Turk gives them a glue guy but they still dont have a 20ppg scorer to stack next to Bosh.

Franchise Fantasy Draft

A new fantasy basketball draft with a twist.

Each person will select an NBA Franchise and you will select a Starting 5 and a Bench of 5 from that Franchise, all time. We need to obviously exclude a few of the Great Teams like the Lakers and Celtics because they have so many amazing players in their franchise. I havent decided on excluding the Bulls and Spurs, think I will but dont know. Tell me what you think on that.

But say i take the Cavs then i could make a team of 10 (5 Starters and 5 Bench) with all time Cavs people. Another could have the pistons, nuggets and so on.

So we will try to get 20 guys. Each guy will have a team that he will represent in the tournament. I want to make sure to take out teams that are unstoppable when you look at them history wise. Obviously the Lakers and Celtics, maybe the Bulls and maybe the Spurs.

What does everyone think?

We will do the draft in a couple weeks, on a Monday or Friday and we will select our franchise in that draft. So right now all we need are the 20 participants for our league so we can create the draft order. Then we will have a tournament to determine the champion for this new franchise fantasy draft TD tourney.

5- We are debating Career stats, you can use prime years or career averages, whatever you think will make your team unbeatable!

NBA Power Ranking March 3rd 09

Lets get things started off right. Firstly, we have had a lot of changes with Allen Iverson getting injured and the Pistons playing better. Steve Nash went down and the Suns beat the Lakers even with Kobe's 49 points. Shaq looks younger than last year. Chris Bosh is declining after starting off the season hot. The Knicks are playing great and why is Nate Robinson a 6th man!

High Riser this week- 25- (30) Washington

Pitiful Faller this week- 11- (7) Dallas

1-(3) Cleveland- 46-12 is the best record in the NBA right now and even with Big Ben getting injured they are still rolling strong. Pulling out a 1 point win over the Hawks, but a win is a win. They have a couple of previous Cavalier PF's that are eligible to rejoin the team after their buyouts in Joe Smith and Drew Gooden. Should be interesting?

2-(1) L.A. Lakers- Letting that game slide against the Suns was a little different to see since Kobe still had nearly 50 points but the Shaqtus had 33 points. Did the Suns show that the Lakers actually can be stopped if you pound it in the paint. The Lakers need to see Bynum return.

3-(2) Boston - Playing pretty well without KG and now they signed the soap drama himself in Stephon Marbury. Actually a very good move and i think the BIG 3 can keep him in line and dont have to worry about him becoming a Cancer because if he does they can just bench him or waive him.

4-(5) San Antonio- Sadly this is the time of year that the Spurs always seem to creep up and show they can still not only play but win championships. Its an odd year and you know what that means for the Spurs.

5- (4) Orlando- Stan Van Gundy has transformed the Magic from being led by a shoot first PG in Jameer Nelson to a pass first flashy guy in Rafer Alston which is very important for the Magic staying in the playoff contention. Rashard Lewis is showing that he was worth that large contract last year.

6-(9) Utah- Finally the team is HEALTHY and watchout. The Jazz were the best team in the NBA in Feb and had a record of 10-1 which is a franchise best, even better than those 2 all of famers in Stockton and Malone that led the team for 20 years. Yeah the Jazz are the only team that havent lost since the All Star break. The have beaten the Lakers, Celtics, and Hornets amongst those wins as well.

7- (8) New Orleans- Well Tyson Chandler gets traded and then they cancel the deal because Chandler didnt pass a physical, crazy i know because he can play, and now he is back as a Hornet and playing very well.

8- (6) Denver- Carmelo was asked by Coach Karl to sub out and he refused so now he is suspended for tonights game. Not to smart... but this team is still deadly anytime they have Billups on the floor. Remember the Nuggets only have one all star this season and its not Melo but Chauncey.

9-(10) Houston- Well the Rockets could be said to be playing with out MR. GLASS aka T-Mac. So keep on eye on this because Yao and Artest have been playing lights out.

10- (11) Portland- Another team i expected to drop off and maybe not even make the playoffs but I am starting to wonder because they play amazing defense. Really i dont know what team misses the playoffs in the west but it comes down to the Suns, Blazers and the 11th team on this ranking.

11- (7) Dallas- The Mavericks seem to be that team that will miss the playoffs. I mean they seem so inconsistent and it will really come down to whatever team is playing hot at the end of the season.

12- (13) Phoenix- si.com reported: What do Shaquille O'Neal and Marbury have in common? They are two of the three players (along Bernard King) to score 40 or more points with four different teams. Shaq reached that milestone with a 45-point outburst against Toronto last Friday. Raptors forward Chris Bosh complained afterward that O'Neal benefited from being able to camp out in the lane. "That's strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men," O'Neal told the Arizona Republic. "I'm going to do the same thing [in their next meeting] I did before -- make him quit. Make 'em quit and complain.It's what I do."

13- (12) Atlanta- Is Josh Smith for real! This team still continues to surprise me.

14- (14) Miami- Well D Wade had 24 points in the 4th quarter against the Knicks after he got elbowed in the Lip and had to get it sown up, some teammates talked about how that should happen every night.

15-(15) Detroit- Iverson gets hurt and then the Pistons beat the Magic and the Celtics on the Road. I think Iverson is going to the bench when he returns.

16- (16) Philadelphia- Things are working out quite nicely without Elton Brand. But they did have a lot of air time recently on Sportscenter with the Buzzer beating Half court shot that Devin Harris made against the Sixers which gave them the game.

17- (21) Chicago- I believe they are the first team to visit the White House and not win the Finals, but that all comes with the President being from Chicago and the Bulls being his favorite team.

18- (17) New Jersey- Still cant believe Devin Harris made that Buzzer beater half court shot after fumbling the ball to beat the Sixers. Watch it if you have not seen it!

19- (19) Milwaukee - Sessions should become a franchise PG for the Bucks.

20- (20) Indiana- At least i got to see the Pacers play in person this season and see the All Star Danny Granger before he was an all star.

21- (18) New York- Why is Nate Robinson a bench player, i mean he provides firepower but ever since the All Star break he has been an All Star type player.

22- (22) Charlotte- How was Emeka Okafor the Rookie of the Year in 2005? What happened to him since then?

23- (24) Golden State- In Sundays game against the Jazz Nellie rested Stephen Jackson, whom is the leading scorer and best player on the Warriors, in favor of playing his younger guys and giving them some playing time. Does that make sense to anyone else?

24- (25) Toronto- So Bosh has been called Rupaul by Shaq, whats next. Shawn Marion becomes the franchise player. Never mind that, he says its to cold in Toronto.

25- (30) Washington- Finally moving up the chart, they have held down that 30th spot for a while now.

26- (23) Minnesota- So should I have much to say here. I mean i really lost interest when they traded away... then big al got ... anyways Kevin Love is leading rookies in rebounding at 8.7 RPG.

27- (27) Oklahoma City- When will Joe Smith be bought out? oh and Kevin Durant is now injured, sorry OKC, hard first season!

28- (28) Sacramento- New look Kings but they didnt Land Nate Robinson but maybe they will revisit that this summer. Dont understand why they waived Drew Gooden?

29- (29) L.A. Clippers- Why did they not trade Baron Davis, oh guess it comes down to money.l mean the Rockets offered Scola and Battier for Baron Davis. Then the Clippers tried to trade him for a month before the deadline but no one took. Teams included the Mavs and Warriors. So why pull out when a team offers something.

30- (26) Memphis- OJ Mayo is a good thing to look forward too but they might have to wait until next season to enjoy it. I mean how can this team ever make the playoffs in their division, they are among the triple texas threat and the Hornets.

Ok i heard that the new Halo Wars game came out for the Xbox 360 so i better get going to purchase that.

NBA spotlight-Rudy Gay

Rudy gay if you dont know him by now is one of the best players in the game right now. lets though not get to far ahead we will start with that he is a 6-8 g/f and went to uconn. he left after his junior year and is from baltimore maryland. he went to st pauls school then transfered to archbishop spalding high[ironic right]. he led a very good high school career with 21.2 ppg and 9.2 rpg with 3.2 bpg as a senior. he was of course a high school all american and made the McDonalds all american team. he went on to UCONN where he led a very good career. he did run into a rough patch over college with his choosing over uconn over umd. After that though he flourished with his known vareity of dunks and playing tough competition. he was known as [perhaps the most talented player in mens college basketball at that time. he was a unanimous big east first team pick. he was not mcuh of a scorer in college but that would all come come during gay's junior year his uconn team was the one who lost to george mason. Rudy was picked 8th overall in the 2005 nba draft. he was traded for shane battier and became a grizzly. he would average 10 ppg as a rookie and made the slam dunk team while also playing in the roookie challenge. now though gay has averges of 18.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg and 1,6 apg. if you dont know him by now you better know him now

2nd NBA Draft TD Tournament Details

Congratulations to hyped78 for winning the 1^st NBA Draft TD Tournament. Hyped will pick first in the upcoming draft for winning and everyone else will have their position randomized.

On to the 2nd NBA Draft TD Tournament!

We are going to do ANOTHER fantasy basketball DRAFT here on fannation in NBA Fanz. We are going to draft 8 man teams this go around. After the teams are all drafted we are going to have a throwdown tournament facing up the different teams.

Signups have already taken place, if you want in we should be able to fit you unless the first round of the draft is already over, then its locked.

There have been a lot of changes this year. Allen Iverson playing PG and SG, Andrea Barganini playing C, PF, and SF. Then you got AK47 and Lamar Odom moving to the bench. I guess what i am trying to explain is that you can pick your guys to play any position if you can debate it being good in a throwdown. So if you pick Dwight Howard for your team to play PG you better be able to defend it in a throwdown.

ALL PLAYERS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE DRAFT BUT MUST CURRENTLY BE ON AN NBA ROSTER AS OF March 2^nd 2009.

Dyhard is going to assist me on the draft and tourney so direct questions to him or myself.
