bruces1g's Football Blog http://www.fannation.com/blogs/show/239869 Thu, 05 Nov 2009 09:42:25 GMT My takes on the SEC and NCAA football The SEC and The Next Best Three - Week 10 http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/479723
With the exception of a couple of games, the entire SEC appears to be taking a week to enjoy some cupcakes. And while that certainly makes for a very dull SEC Saturday for most, there is at least one big matchup that promises to be a major throw-down.

For those keeping score, last week I went 7-3. This brings my abbreviated season total to a decent-but-not-spectacular 14-5.

As always, I start from the earliest kickoff times first...

South Carolina at Arkansas: Two weeks ago, I would have said this would be a great game with two improving teams. However, that was before the Hogs got roasted by the Rebs and the Vols plucked the Gamecocks. Now it looks like a game between two teams that are dazed and confused and desperately seeking a clue.

Last week I predicted that the Vols would get the win, but that SC's defense would make it a tough game. Well, I guess the SC defense forgot to get on the bus for that trip. Now to add to their misery, they lost one of their better DE Cliff Matthews for the season. They will be replacing him with a freshman.

This is important, because in order for the Gamecocks to beat the Hogs, they have to get pressure on QB Mallett. Now they will have to really depend on Eric Norwood to get the rush from the outside. I think this is going to end up putting a lot of extra pressure on a young secondary.

On the other hand, the Hogs have not exactly been a cement-wall on defense. Good news for them is that they are facing a Stephen Garcia offense that is, well, offensive. Other words that come to mind are inept, ineffective, and inconsistent. I think the Razorbacks find a way to win this one.

Tennessee Tech at Georgia: The first of the desert bar offerings. Georgia - read Mark Richt - has been catching hell following the thorough trashing they got from the Gators. Even the Great Eyeball Scandal (was he trying to blind him or merely adjusting his contacts?), could not hide the fact that the Dawgs defense was just terrible and the offense not far behind. However, all will be good between the hedges as they vent their frustrations on the Golden Eagles.

Eastern Kentucky at Kentucky: The second of the soft treats on the menu this week. The Wildcats cost me one of my missed picks last week when they let the MSU Bulldogs thump them on their home field. Make it up to the home fans by inviting the Colonels in for easy whipping. FCS meet SEC.

Furman at Auburn: The Tigers are coming off a complete beating of the Ole Miss Rebs last week, and the love fest will continue at home this week. If Auburn can play the same level of defense from week to week, they will give some folks some headaches (Bama) before the season ends. However, this week will not be a big test and everybody gets to play.

LSU at Bama: OK, this is the BIG ONE for the week. This game could not only be the decider for the SEC West, but also has major implications for the BCS picture. There will most assuredly be folks in Cincy, Boise, Ames, and Fort Worth closely watching this game.

I have wrestled with how to approach this game for a couple of weeks now. LSU's offense has looked much improved in the past couple of weeks after underachieving early on. However, that has been against the likes of Tulane and an inconsitent Auburn. Alabama's offense started off hot, has since sputtered. Outside of Mark Ingram, it has been non-existent the past two weeks. LSU's defense has looked good, and at times, really good. Bama's D has been outstanding all season long.

So what we end up with is two not-so-great offenses squaring-off against two good defenses. And while it may be a tired old cliche, this game will ultimately be decided in the trenches.

Both teams have had to cobble together new O-lines this season. Bama had to replace two all conference lineman and LSU had to find replacements for two NFL draftees. In the early going, Bama seemed to have recovered nicely and the O-line looked strong in the run and pass protection. However, in the past few games the pass protection has looked suspect and paving the way for the running game has become increasingly difficult as opposing teams load the box to stop Ingram. However, they have done well enough to allow Ingram to rack-up over 1,000 yards so far, and the team has 1,734 net rushing yards total. And while McElroy has been hurried quite a bit of late, the line has given up only 8 sacks in 8 games.

The Tigers' O-line has not been as kind to their QB Jefferson as they have given up 23 sacks this season. Their net rushing totals have also been non-typical for the Tigers as they only have 1,132 yards and rank 69th in the nation in rushing. RB Charles Scott has also been held to an uncharacteristic 459 net yards and only 4 TD's.

So in the battle of the Big Uglies, I see it this way: LSU's defensive line and Bama's Offensive line matchup looks to be a draw. Neither one has been dominate, but both have played well at times. That being the case, the big matchup will be how the Tiger's offensive line fares against the Bama defensive front 7. Judging from LSU's tendency to give up sacks and lack of a consistent running game, I think Alabama has the edge in this slugfest. The Bama defense has been murder on the run this year and has made some pretty good QB's look very average. However, this could be the best offensive line the defense has faced and certainly the most talented corp of WR's. But if the Bama defense can frustrate the Tiger's offense, and give the offense some short fields to work with, then I believe Ingram will be able to make some plays.

As a side note, this game could very well come down to special teams play. Both teams sport exceptional kick/punt returners in Javier Arenas (Bama) and Trindon Holliday (LSU). Either player could be a game breaker. If it comes down to place kickers, the Tide has a slight advantage with Leigh Tiffin - if for no other reason than he has had plenty of practice this season.

Regardless of the outcome, I believe this will be a hard fought and emotional contest for both teams. Bama is trying to protect their BCS & SEC hopes and the Tigers are trying to improve theirs. Both teams will be laying it all out in this one and 9-6 game would not surprise me in the least. Let the shouts of "Homer!" begin, but Bama is 8-0 for a reason. I think the Tide has just enough of an edge that they manage to get the win.

Memphis at Tennessee: Another SEC team visiting the desert bar. Tennessee will easily skin these Tigers.

Vandy at Florida: Last week was bad for Vandy as they got whacked by Georgia Tech. It don't get any better this week as they travel to the Swamp to meet the Gators. No doubts about this one - even without Spikes, the Gators will easily "gouge" (sorry I just couldn't resist) the Commodores.

Northern Arizona at Ole Miss: The Rebs get to feast on a soft FCS opponent this week. The good news is they should look pretty good in this game. A team called the Lumberjacks will obviously not meet the dress code standards of the fashion-conscience crowd at The Grove.

___________________________________

Now for the Next Best Three. This week we have two big conference game and one REALLY big conference throw-down.

As usual, these games are chosen from suggestions by various FN posters.

Oregon at Stanford: The Quack Attack is coming off a huge win last week that might have signaled a change in the pecking order in the PAC 10. This week they can't let up as they have to face an improving Stanford team that has played better than their record would indicate. Freshmen QB Andrew Luck has been impressive this season having already thrown for 1825 yards and 9 TDs. Toby Gerhart is a bruising RB that has pounded out 994 yards this season. However, the weakness for the Cardinal is their defense and they have to face one of the hottest offenses in the country. Oregon's offense looked nothing short of spectacular in shredding a good USC defense last week, and they shouldn't have much trouble doing the same to the not-quite-ready-for-primetime Cardinal.

Ohio State at Penn State: Defense, Defense, Defense. Two of the nations top-ranked defenses square off this week in what has become an annual epic Big 10 battle. Not only are these two teams very evenly matched defensively, both offenses live and die by the play of their QBs - who both have very different styles.

OSU QB Terrelle Pryor has had an up-and-down season this year. Yet, he has still managed to amass 1543 yards passing and 13 TDs thru the air. He also brings another dimension to the Buckeye attack in his ability to run the ball (he has 554 yards rushing) and utilize his speed to make big plays. In my opinion, Pryor is most dangerous when he is improvising and reacting. Facing a fast and talented group of PSU LBs he will surely need all speed he can muster. But a cool and confident Pryor is a defensive coordinator's worst nightmare.

Daryll Clark might not beat you with his feet, but he sure as hell can beat you with his arm. Clark has 2158 yards and 18 TDs this season and has a very dangerous pair of receivers in Derek Moye and Chaz Powell. Moye already has 648 yards in receptions and averages 16.6 YPC on 39 receptions. Powell has a 14.1 YPC with 25 catches. This trio can lull you with short game and then suddenly torch a defense for the big play. The Buckeye secondary will be tested early and often.

Considering that both teams play exceptional defense, this game could come down to just a few crucial areas:

1. PSU needs to get Evan Royster some running room. A decent running threat will open up the play action passing as well as slow down the pass rush. Giving the accurate Clark plenty of time to throw could be a very bad thing for the OSU defense.

2. OSU needs to get Pryor on the edges. With his speed, Pryor is very dangerous if he breaks containment and can use either his arm or feet. Rolling Pryor out helps slow the rush and I think helps with his decision making. It also will put a lot of pressure on the PSU secondary if they also have to aid in run support.

3. Conversely, the Nittany Lions have to get Pryor out of his comfort zone. Bring the heat, but be sure to also play contain. Disguise the coverages, and make him have to work his progressions. Slow down his reactions. If they can do this, then the Buckeye offense becomes much more pedestrian.

4. This one will come down to the big men in the front lines. Both O-lines are facing their toughest challenges to date and deciding the outcome may very well be as simple as who can push who around.

With all of this in mind, I have to give the edge to Penn State in this one. I think that their defensive front is slightly better than OSU's and the senior Clark is a steadier hand at guiding his offense. To me, OSU is just too dependent on the rise and fall of Pryor. Plus there will be a loud and packed house in Happy Valley. However, if I were a betting man, I would definitely take the "under" on this game.

U Conn at Cincy: In my opinion, the Bearcats have the best chance of any of the other current unbeaten teams to work their way into the NCG. But to get there, they are going to have to deal with a Huskie team that has shown a lot of heart and determination in playing through some serious adversity this season.

Cincy has survived the loss of their star QB Tony Pike, and even flourished with Zach Collaros stepping in. Pike has practiced this week, but Coach Brian Kelly hasn't said for certain which QB will start this game But I would be willing to bet that if the starter stumbles, he would be confident in playing the other. That is a pleasant luxury for any team.

U Conn has had a tough season, losing a teammate and have lost 4 games by margins of four points or less. Now they are facing the Bearcats without starting QB Cody Endres. The hard luck just keeps coming.

While the Huskies have played inspired and with a lot of heart, emotion can only take you so far. This week they will come up short again as the Bearcats just have too much firepower. A Cincy win sets up a very big game with Pitt on December 5th.

That is the way I see it this weekend. Feel free to disagree or point out the error of my logic, but respect the rule of no cheap smack without something to back it up. Bring some facts. Bring some substance to your position. Demonstrate your football knowledge rather than lack of class.

Remember to go ahead and leave your nominations for your Next Best 3 choices for next week. The only rule is that no more than one game per conference. Otherwise, I try to choose games that could have national implications.

For more Big 10 action and a different slant on other games, be sure to check Norka's excellent "The Big 10 and Next Best 3" blog.

To all fans, of all teams: Enjoy the weekend. I wish your teams good luck. And let's all show some class and sportsmanship.

Thu, 05 Nov 2009 09:42:25 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/479723 BruceS1G The SEC and The Next Best Three - Week 9 http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/476520 "Better late than never" my Mom always said. So keeping that in mind, I am going to try to post at least an abbreviated version this week. Sorry that this is so late, but things were very hectic at work this week (yes, I actually have a REAL job) and this weekend the Wadester has contracted some type of stomach virus that has had him calling Roy on the big white telephone. So please forgive me.

Also, due to the hectic schedule, I didn't get to post the wrap-up blog. However, I did manage to post a nice 7-2 (3 of 3 in the NB3 picks). I will have to confess that in most cases, the games were much closer than I had anticipated. But as Nick Saban says, a win is a win!

Week 9 has a full slate of games, with the exception of Alabama (Hmmm, perhaps they can pick up a TD or two against "Bye"). As is the norm, the order of the picks are by kickoff times.

Ole Miss at Auburn: Ole Miss came out smoking last week as they gunned-down the Hogs. And Auburn got smoked as LSU gave them a severe spanking. The questions are if the Rebs have truly regained their form and if the Tigers can mend their offense and find a way to stop the hemorrhaging on defense. Ole Miss demonstrated a strong defensive effort last week, and that is the last thing that an ailing Auburn offense needs to see. Even though both teams have been on the yo-yo ride this season, it seems that the Rebels look a little more steady at this point. The home field might keep it close, but I think Auburn's defensive woes continue and they lose another.

Georgia at Florida: The Gator fans have been sweating from week to week this season, wondering if the offense will finally ignite. In spite of these sputters, the Gators have still managed to find a way to keep winning. To me, this game is easy to dissect: Georgia's defense has been pathetic all year and Florida has too much talent (Tebow) on offense. Tebow has to be anxious to take his shots at the very porous Dawg pass defense, and I look for some big plays. To make matters worse for the Dawgs, the Gators are getting three starters back on the D this week and QB Cox is going to have a long day. The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will turn into a dog roast. Somebody call the SPCA!

E. Michigan at Arkansas: The Hogs have to be a little PO'd about the last weeks drubbing. A good cure for a bad loss is a sacrificial lamb, umm, eagle. Not much of a way to stir-up any real excitement for this one; it won't be pretty as the Hawgs win going away.

Mississippi State at Kentucky: The big question on my mind is if the Bulldogs have suddenly found themselves, or was the close game with Florida just an aberration? The Bulldog defense gave the Gators fits as they forced Tebow into tossing two pick-six's. And they had some success against a good Gator defense. So does that signal a change of fortune for the Bulldogs? Kentucky has their version of Tebow in all-around threat Randall Cobb - he runs, he throws, he catches, he returns punts, and probably sells programs before the game - and did not miss starting QB Mike Hartline one bit. Miss. St. really laid it out last week, and I feel that their tanks are going to be a little empty this week. Give this one to the Wildcats at home.

Georgia Tech at Vanderbilt: You would think that the Commodores would be well familiar with the triple option and would have an answer for it on defense. However, the only thing that Vandy has been really good at this year is losing. The Jackets will run up and down on the field in this and rack up some big numbers in the win.

South Carolina at Tennessee: This might be the best game in the SEC this week - especially if you like defensive slugging matches. The Vols defense looked good in stymieing Bama last week and QB Crompton showed some glimpses as well. Certainly they played well enough to win the game but just couldn't quite get over Mt. Cody. The Gamecocks have also been playing some inspired defense this season and their QB Garcia has also shown some improvement from week to week.

The big factor will be who can stop the running game and force one of the QBs to win it with their arms. Neither team has overpowered opponents with punishing rushing attacks of late (TN scratched out 76-yards against Bama and SC managed a puny 119 against Vandy), and both teams have stout defenses, so negating the running game won't be a big challenge for either. Freshman Alshon Jeffery emerged last week as a premium receiver for Garcia. Tennessee WR Gerald Jones had a very good 72-yards receiving and one TD against a very good Bama defense.

So how to call this one? For SC to win, Garcia will have to play one of his best games and the Gamecock defense will have to get after Crompton early and often. Tennessee will need to get RB Montario Hardesty on track to slow down the pass rush. I hate to think that Kiffin is a better coach than Spurrier, but in the end I think Tennessee is just a better team at this point, and I have to go with the Vols for the win. As a side note, it will be interesting to see which of these coaches earns the wrath of SEC Commissioner Slive and his newly installed suspension policy for griping about officiating.

Tulane at LSU: OK, I know that this is as close as LSU has to an in-state rival, but this SEC-CUSA match-up is more like a death match for Tulane. The Green Wave has floundered 37 straight times against ranked teams and you would have to go back to 1982 for the last time they beat LSU. Since that time, the Tigers have piled up 17 in a row over the Wave and they should be able to make it an easy 18th. The only real factor in this game will be whether or not LSU gets caught looking ahead to their big showdown with Bama next week, but that should only effect the winning margin, not the outcome.

Now for the Next Best Three. This weeks trio has a couple of important conference matchups and one very interesting storyline.

As usual, these games are chosen from suggestions by various FN posters.

Central Michigan at Boston College: How about those Chippewas? After dropping their season opener against Arizona, they have reeled-off 7 straight wins - including an impressive win at Michigan State. The dynamic duo of QB Dan LeFevour and WR/Utility man Anotonio Brown have been racking-up some impressive stats along the way as they lead the powerful Chippewa offense in all categories. The play of LeFevour and Brown usually draws the attention of most opponents, but the play of the defense is one of the main reasons why Central Michigan is in the midst of a seven-game winning streak. Central Michigan has done an impressive job limiting the opposition to just 113.8 rushing YPG on a mere 3.4 yards per attempt. However, not to be overlooked is the team's effort against the pass, as the Chippewas are holding teams to just 216.8 YPG through the air.

On the other hand, Boston College has not been nearly as impressive. The defense has played well in spots, but Notre Dame exposed a very shaky secondary as they torched the Eagles for 246-yards and two TDs. They are much better at stopping the run and they have been strong playing at home. If LeFevour can get adequate time to throw the ball on Saturday, I look for Central Michigan to pull off the semi-upset.

Texas at Oklahoma State: At the beginning of the season, this game was pointed to as one of a gauntlet of games that the Horns would have to run through to get to the NCG. However, as the season has progressed, this appears to be a case of two teams heading in different directions. Last week, Colt McCoy and the Horns lit up the Mizzou Tigers and the defense absolutely stonewalled a prolific offense. To me the most impressive thing about Texas this year is the improved play of the defense and how they have controlled some pretty impressive offenses. The Horn's defense has looked like one of the top units in the nation (Boy, never thought I would be saying THAT about a Big 12 team!).

The Cowboys have had their problems. Their most impressive win this season was against what is now a suspect Georgia team, and they squandered away that success and national recognition in a loss to Houston. Since then, they have pounded some really inferior teams (Rice, Grambling, Baylor) while struggling mightily against Texas A&M. Now they have to face a resurgent and battle tested Texas team with their best rusher hobbled (Kendall Hunter) and without all-world receiver Dez Bryant. To top off the lack of offensive playmakers, the Hokies have to depend on a defensive unit that ranks 132nd in the NCAA. I look for Texas to take control early and win going away.

USC at Oregon: Could this signal the end of USC's run of PAC 10 crowns? Oregon brings a 4-0 conference record and lead into the game while riding a six game winning streak. After folding like a cheap tent on the Blue Rug in the season opener, the Ducks have been playing like an inspired and highly motivated team. QB Jeremiah Masoli is now healthy and has looked like he is really hitting his stride in past few weeks. The Ducks offense has clicked the last three games rolling up an average 484-yards and over 45 points. Meanwhile the Quack attack defense has been playing pretty well, holding their last 4 opponents to 211 YPG or lower. They are also a plus-19 in turnovers.

Defensively, the Trojans have had it rough the past few weeks. After narrowly escaping with a win at Notre Dame where they gave up 367-yards, they then allowed the Oregon State Beavers to roll them for 482-yards of total offense. With freshman QB Matt Barkley sporting a 7 TD to 5 INT ratio, this is not a good sign. Fortunately, RBs Joe McKnight and Allen Bradford have been a good tandem in the running game.

In order for USC to win this game, they are going to have to play ball-control and keep the Quack Attack on the sideline. This means McKnight and/or Bradford helping to pound out long, clock eating drives. If the Trojans defense spends too much time on the field, it is going to mean a lot more chances for Ducks to ring-up some big plays. I think that the Oregon defense is going to sell-out to stuff that running game and force Barkley to win the game. Conversely, I just don't think that USC defense will be up to the challenge of stopping the wide-open Ducks offense all day and in the end Oregon wins this one fin front of a very boisterous home crowd.

So there it is, my choices for this week. Opinions and/or dissenting viewpoints are welcomed, but respect the rule of no cheap smack without something to back it up. Bring some facts. Bring some substance to your position. Demonstrate your football knowledge rather than lack of class.

Remember to go ahead and leave your nominations for your Next Best 3 choices for next week. I feel like I am home again.

Now that I have dispensed with all the warm, touch-feely sentiments, lets get down to some SEC Football!

This weeks slate has some interesting matchups as we approach the nitty-gritty of the season. As always, the order of the picks are by kickoff times

ARKANSAS at OLE MISS: At the beginning of the season these two QB's were supposed to the cream of the crop and potential Heisman candidates. That has all fallen to the way side. Now Ole Miss is playing to recoup some lost pride and Arkansas is trying to exert itself as a force in the Western Division. The Hawgs came within a few missed FG's (and a couple questionable calls) of knocking-off the Gators last week and they have to still be feeling the pain. Ole Miss enjoyed a week beating up on UAB. Which team will be in better shape for this week's game? I believe that Arkansas is improving from week to week and they have found the beginnings of a defense. They forced 4 turnovers against a good Gator team - and Ole Miss ain't Florida. Snead has struggled, especially when pressured and I believe the Hogs will be bringing the heat. If the Hogs aren't hungover from last week's game, they should be able to take this one.

NORKA: Arkansas Razorbacks (3-3) on the road OVER Mississippi Rebels (4-2) Ole Miss has struggled offensively this year in conference while Arkansas has proven they can light up a score board

TENNESSEE at ALABAMA: As a Bama fan, this is always a special week. The Third Saturday In October is a high-holy day for Southern football. "The Mouth" Kiffen has been relatively mum about Saban and the Tide and perhaps it is because of what he has seen on film of the Bama defense. Vols QB Crompton looked like a totally different person (did the pod people come and replace him?) as he lit up the Bulldogs last week. Either this means that he has turned some kind of corner or that Georgia's defense is even more pathetic than I thought. However, this week he is facing the best defense in the nation and I don't think he will posting such great numbers. Alabama's defense has been the quarterback humbler this season and I think that Crompton will be getting a painful reality check. Monte Kiffen's defense may slow Bama down some, but the Tide rolls in this one.

NORKA: Alabama Crimson Tide (7-0) at home Over Tennessee Volunteers (3-3) Which Vol team is going to show up, the team that thrashed UGA or the team that stunk it up against Auburn? It won???t matter; the only difference will be margin of victory for the Tide.

VANDERBILT at SOUTH CAROLINA: South Carolina played a tough game in their loss to Bama, but showed why their defense was ranked 6th in the nation coming into that game (currently they are 19th). Their offense still has a way to go, but Stephen Garcia has shown marked improvement in his QB play. Vandy, on the other hand, has just been pathetic. They have followed up last year's bowl season with a resounding flop this season - they even got drilled by Army and could only manage 10 points against Georgia's "We Can Make Any Offense Look Good" defense. File this one under the category of clubbing baby seals as the Gamecocks win going away.

NORKA: South Carolina Gamecocks (5-2) at home OVER Vanderbilt Commodores (2-5) SC should have little trouble at home with Vandy, who look to be quickly re-occupying their familiar role as SEC door mat.

UL-MONROE at KENTUCKY: Kentucky is coming off a big win against Auburn and this in spite of losing their starting QB Mile Hartline. Against the Warhawks, it is believed that the Wildcats will start freshman QB Morgan Newton. IF they aren't suffering from a big-win hangover, Kentucky should win this one. However, I just have a bad feeling about the game. ULM is not a bad team and could easily manage the upset. In fact, I am going to go out on a limb on this one and say that the Warhawks catch the Wildcats flat and get the win.

NORKA: Kentucky Wildcats (3-3) at home OVER Louisiana Monroe Warhawks (4-2) Coming off a huge win at Auburn last week, the Wildcats face a decent ULM team not to be taken lightly.

AUBURN at LSU: In the last two weeks, Auburn's stock has dropped faster than a Bernie Madoff fund following a thumping from Arkansas and a meltdown at Kentucky. LSU has had a week to recoup from their loss to the Gators. Rumor has it that Coach Miles spent that week with bloodhounds searching for their offense. This is a real tough game to call as both teams have been very inconsistent this season and there is no telling whether Jekyll or Hyde will show up Saturday. LSU's best play has been on the defensive side of the ball and Auburn's biggest improvement has been Gus Malzahn's offense. Although QB Chris Todd has regressed in the past few games, Ben Tate has been carrying the load. So in that respect it will be strength-against-strength. However, the real question will be LSU's woeful offense (a pitiful 112th nationally) vs. Auburn's porous defense (a dismal 72nd in the nation) and which one will play well enough to make the difference. I have to give the nod to LSU in a low scoring affair as they have more talent on the offensive side of the ball and are playing at home. But I wouldn't be surprised if Auburn pulls out a win.

NORKA: Louisiana State Tigers (5-1) at home OVER Auburn Tigers (5-2) Still waiting for LSU to turn on the jets, could this be the week? Doubtful, looks like another ugly win for LSU.

FLORIDA at MISSISSIPPI STATE: This should be a week that makes Gator fans feel better about their offense as they are facing one of the worst defenses in the SEC. The Bulldog offense is hardly better and facing a very good Florida defense. This one has "slaughter" written all over it, as I expect that Meyer will have his Gators go full throttle to quite some of the critics and regain some national respect. So much for being nice to his coaching buddy.

NORKA: Florida Gators (6-0) on the road OVER Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-4) After the Gators lackluster win at LSU and their near miss last week at home against Arkansas, the Bulldogs could be in for a long evening.

????????????????????????????????????????????????

Now for the Next Best Three. This weeks trio has a bit of importance in sorting out the BCS pecking order as well as some important conference matchups.

As usual, these games are chosen by popular demand by various FN posters (and if I didn't like their choices, I chose the ones that I wanted).

IOWA at MICHIGAN STATE: The Hawkeyes have quietly slipped into the national BCS picture in the past couple of weeks with a big win over Wisconsin last week. While they haven't been very spectacular on offense, they have a stingy, hard-hitting defense that will keep them in any game. Last week they held the Big 10's top rusher (John Clay) to 75 yards. Michigan Stateis on a three game winning streak, after a three game losing streak. Almost every week has been a struggle for the Spartans and this week should be no exception. It looks like Thermopylae all over again as the Spartans take a beating.

TCU vs BYU: Can you remember at the first of the season when BYU was being touted as a BCS buster? Then Florida State came to town and burst that bubble. Now it is TCU in the role of BCS buster and the Cougars have a chance get a little revenge. But while the Cougars appear to have bounced back nicely from the week 3 meltdown, they have not been playing anyone near the caliber of TCU. The **** Toads (I love calling them that) bring the nations 4th best defense into Provo and an offense that is averaging nearly 34 points per game. QB Andy Dalton touts a 152.2 rating and has to be licking his chops going against a secondary that is not exactly world class. Still the deciding factor is going to be TCU's defense and whether or not Max Hall can throw while running for his life. I look for the Horn Frogs to take control of this one early and throttle the Cougars.

OREGON STATE vs USC: The Beavers have enjoyed being the fly in the ointment for the Trojans in the past few years having won two of their last three meetings. Also, a win would be a huge step in a quest for a PAC 10 title. A win by USC sets up a big game next week at Oregon. The Trojans are coming off a close win against ND, and one has to wonder if their emotional tank may be a bit empty. OSU has enjoyed an open week to get ready for the Trojans.

There are several keys to this game:

1. Can USC's defense contain the Rodgers brothers?
2. Can OSU's offense get anything going against the Trojans 9th ranked defense?
3. Can OSU's defense step up and stuff McKnight and pressure Barkley?

While the Trojans may be a bit drained from their drama last week, I think that they will be too strong for Beavers in the coliseum.

So there it is, my choices (and Norka's) for this week. Please comment as you like, but respect the rule of no cheap smack without something to back it up.

To all fans, of all teams: Enjoy the weekend. I wish your teams good luck. And let's all show some class and sportsmanship.
Thu, 22 Oct 2009 00:50:22 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/469279 BruceS1G What Went Down in Week 13 - The Way I Saw It http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/294497 Time to break out the roasting pan and prepared to dine once again on some crow. This past weekend I was dismal in my picks. In fact, it was just down right ugly. Even the ones that I did get, I was off base on. Geez, I may have to change this to a comedy blog or start posting my picks on Sunday. I think I also might need to get Wade involved again.

I was a pathetic 2-2 in the SEC, but better in the national picks going 2-1 (but the one I missed, I missed large). This brings my total to 54-21. I am afraid I am not much better than .500, so you might want to take my opinion with a grain of salt. ;)

Enough moaning and groaning, now lets look at what happened this week...

TENNESSEE over VANDERBILT: Vandy had a golden opportunity to put a hurting on the Vols, but instead decided to give them an early holiday gift. Two Vandy turnovers led directly to 10 points for the Vols. The Vols helped their own cause by actually generating 10 points on offense. Vandy's only real offensive score was a FG and the TD came on a pick 6. Vandy's chances of playing a bowl game in a warmer climate is looking mighty slim.

FLORIDA over CITADEL: As everyone in the free-world knew it would be, this game was a severe slaughter. To Meyer's credit, he did pull the starters very early in the second quarter and most of the over-the-top scoring was done by backups. The Gator's looked awesome against the FCS team, but will have a stiffer challenge in their next game against FSU.

MISSISSIPPI STATE over ARKANSAS: State really surprised me in this game by generating their best offensive performance of the year. RB Anthony Dixon turned it on for 179 rushing yards and three TDs - this from a team that was averaging a meager 77-yards rushing against SEC teams. On the defensive side, the Bulldogs managed to hold Michael Smith, the SEC's #2 rusher to only 60-yards. This win could be important in helping Sly Croom get another season with the Bulldogs. On the positive side, this game was the debut of Casey Dick's younger brother, Nathan, thus insuring several more years of joke material.

OLE MISS over LSU: LSU continued to have a rocky home season this year as they once again gave another team all the opportunities that they needed to win. This time it was not Lee tossing another pick-6 (although he did have one interception before leaving the game injured), but the defensive secondary that left receivers so open that they were almost lonely. Twice Jevon Snead found wide open receivers, once for a 34-yard TD and then again late in the game for 39-yard gain that set up the final touchdown. Snead ended up 16-or-25 for 274-yards and 2 TDs. The Rebel's defense also turned in a dominating performance in holding LSU to 215-yards of total offense with only 37-yards net rushing. They also forced two interceptions and sacked the LSU QBs 4 times. Ole Miss has their annual duel with Miss State next week and could finish with a surprising 8-4 record.

Now for the Next Best Three...

PENN STATE over MICHIGAN STATE: The Nittany Lions secured a Rose Bowl spot and a share of the Big 10 title by trashing the Spartans. Daryll Clark went wild throwing for 341-yards and four TDs. On the other side, the PSU defense stuffed Javon Ringer the whole game holding him to just 42-yards. This game was over early as the PSU was up 28-7 at the half and never let up on the way to a completely dominating performance. In addition, the win invigorated Joe Pa and he pledged to remain at the helm for at least one more year. Paterno on the sidelines in a Little Rascal scooter?

UTAH over BYU: The Utes persevered in the Holy War and in doing so kept their undefeated season and role of BCS-buster alive. An opportunistic Utah defense forced Max Hall into throwing 5 picks and one fumble. The Utes turned those turnover into a fourth quarter 21-point landslide after the Cougars had cut it to 27-24 mid way thru the third quarter. In contrast, the Utes' Brian Johnson had a phenomenal game going 30 of 36 for 303-yards and 4 TDs with no interceptions. Now sitting 12-0 and at #6 in the BCS standings, the Utes are assured of a BCS bowl game and perhaps more if anyone stumbles. Let the BCS complaining begin!

OKLAHOMA over TEXAS TECH: Here is one that I never would have imagined. If anyone had told me that OU's lackluster (at least until this game) defense would hold the high-powered Red Raider offense to just 21 points, I would have told them to put the crack-pipe down. This was an unbelievable performance by the Sooners as they did everything that they had to do to win this game. Kudos to Stoops for having his team very well prepared.

First, they dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage. The offensive line created gaping holes that allowed OU to run for 299-yards and DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown both go over 100-yards. They exposed a much smaller TT defensive line by going straight at them and pounding them into exhaustion. On the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners stuffed the TT rushing attack very early on and then set their sights on Harrell. Mixing blitzes, stunts and coverages, the Sooners confused, harassed and frustrated the Red Raider's QB all night. Their masterful defensive plan also included shutting down Michael Crabtree for much of the game, taking away a potent weapon in the TT attack. Tech's offensive line that had looked very impressive in early games, suddenly found itself out-muscled and out-quicked as the Sooners attacked the gaps created by the wide line splits that the Red Raiders employ. This allowed the Sooners to bring pressure from a variety of angles and disguise their coverages very effectively. In addition, they were very aware of the TT screen-pass tendencies and repeatedly snuffed them out.

Overall if was a very impressive performance by the Sooners and certainly they looked like a much better team than the one that lost to Texas. For sure, the Big 12 South is now a mess and will probably be decided by BCS Poll positions. It will interesting to see how it all plays out in the next couple of weeks.

That is all the crow for me for now. I will try to have the next pick em posted by sometime Wednesday, as there is a full slate of SEC games for the weekend - some with very large implications. Be sure to let me know as soon as you can about the Next Best 3 games. I'd like to thank everyone for their input over the weeks - it has made it challenging.

Tue, 25 Nov 2008 04:39:42 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/294497 BruceS1G The SEC And The Next Best Three - Week 13 Picks http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/292935 First an apology for the lateness of this blog. Unfortunately, I have been rather tied up with the day job. Also, sorry for not getting the weekly wrap up posted as well.

Since there wasn't the usually wrap up post, let me inform you that I did go 6-2 in last weeks' picks, to bring my total to 56-20. For those of you keeping track, Wade and I had the same picks last week, but I did dust him on the score prediction of the Bama-Miss St. game. Wade is taking a pass on predictions this week, as he has more pressing social engagements.

Now on to the picks.

Week 13 in the SEC doesn't have any real BCS shattering implications, but there are some important games for the teams involved.

As always, the oder of the picks are based on kickoff times.

TENNESSEE at VANDERBILT: The last thing the Vols need to top their disastrous season is to lose to cross-state rival Vandy. For years, Vandy has played the role of whipping boy to the Vols, but the times, they are a changing. Vandy is coming off a big win against Kentucky and now have their bowl eligible 6 wins. A win over the Vols would be a sweet icing on a very good Dores season, not to mention another win will get them an even better bowl game. Tennessee is a team that has quit. It doesn't even seem that they have any pride left. And now they are facing a good Vandy in Nashville. The Vols season will continue to play out like a bad country song and getting beat by Vandy is going to be just one more verse.

CITADEL at FLORIDA: The Cadets against the Gators. In the Swamp. Gators trying to get to the BCS Championship. Urban Meyer has no problem running up the score. Slaughter. Enough said.

ARKANSAS at MISSISSIPPI STATE: This is the match between the have-nots. Neither team has been lighting up the SEC this season and certainly they are playing only for pride at this point. The Razorbacks have been playing better towards the end of the season and the Bulldogs' offense has continued its downward spiral. I think that Miss State left what little it had left on the field against Bama last week and I look for the Hawgs to get the win.

OLE MISS at LSU: LSU barely avoided a humiliating defeat last week at home to Troy. However, the Tigers did show a lot of heart in coming back and winning that game (even if the fans deserted them). I wonder how much that took out of that team? This week a better team in the Rebels come to visit, and while the Rebels have been playing well offensively but have really been playing well on the defensive side. This is not good for the Tigers considering that Lee has a streak of pick-6's going and the alternative is another freshman, Jordan Jefferson, who was not that much more impressive. If the Tigers start the first half of this game as flat as they did against Troy, Nutt will not let off the gas pedal till the game is done. I think that the Rebels are playing well enough to win this game on the road. I wonder if the Tiger fans will stay the whole game this week?

Now for the non-SEC games. Since I didn't get the wrap up posted this week, and didn't get the reader input, I will have to choose the games for myself. However, it shouldn't be too hard to pick the big matchups this week.

MICHIGAN STATE at PENN STATE: Joe Paterno saw his NC hopes fall earlier this season, so now the Rose Bowl is the goal. To get there, the Lions are going to have to take care of the Spartans. I don't think that they will have much trouble as the PSU defense should be able to throttle the Spartans. With Spartan QB Brian Hoyer passing for a dismal 46.2% completion rate at home, they will have to depend on Javon Ringer to carry the load. A one dimensional Spartan offense should be like fresh meat for the Lions. This probably won't be an offensive showcase for either team, but the Lions will win the defensive battle.

BYU at UTAH: The Holy War. This game will decide who will be the non-BCS conference team to crash the BCS frat party. If Utah gets the win, then they will almost certainly stay ahead of Boise State in the polls and have the inside track. A BYU win opens the door for Boise State (guess who they will be pulling for). This game could have been a play-in for BYU as well, but TCU ruined that for them. The Utes will be facing a for-real gunslinger in Max Hall, with a 71.5% completion rate (4th best in the nation) and has 34 TD passes. Utah's defense crushed San Diego St. last week and early this year they slammed the door TCU - the same TCU that lit up BYU for 32 points this season. While the Cougars do have a potent offense and a great QB, their defensive play leads a lot to be desired. I think that the Utah attack will be enough against the Cougar's defense and that their D will muster enough to stop Hall and Company. Since the last 10 of 11 meetings between these teams has been decided by about 7 points, this will probably be a close one.

TEXAS TECH at OKLAHOMA: The Red Raiders take a road trip to Norman this weekend to face the Sooners in what might be a BCS play-in for either team. This is a huge game for not only for the BCS championship potential, but also for the Big 12. A loss by TT would create turmoil for the South division and would lead to a three way tie - which would lead to a convoluted tie breaker to decide who goes to the conference championship game.

Since their loss to Texas in week 7, the Sooners have been rolling up big numbers on offense. However, in those wins some not-so-flattering facts jump out:
1. Those big wins have come against some fairly weak opponents - Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska and Texas A&M - four teams with a combined record of 21 - 23.
2. The national rankings of those four teams defenses are: 91, 115, 68, and 112 respectively.
3. In those same four games, the Sooners' defense has allowed an average of 30.5 points per game and a whopping 434.25 yards of net offense.
4. The toughest opponent that they have played, to date, is Texas. The Sooners lost that game.

To be honest, the Sooners just don't seem that impressive when viewed in light of whom they have played. On the other hand, Texas Tech has wins over Texas and Oklahoma State. Particularly impressive in those two wins is how the Red Raider defense managed minimize Colt McCoy and Zac Robinson with pressure and by taking away both team's running game.

Most of the sports pundits seem to think that Oklahoma is the best team in the Big 12. I hate to say it, but IMO, based on their body of work this season, that they are overrated. I think that the Texas Tech offense will take the Sooner defense to the woodshed with Harrell and Crabtree continuing their offensive clinic tour. Meanwhile the defense will keep Sam Bradford out of rhythm and hound him into making costly mistakes. It might not be a runaway, but I believe that the Red Raiders win this one comfortably.

That is it for this week. Please comment as you like, but respect the rule of no cheap smack without something to back it up. Bring some facts. Bring some substance to your position. Demonstrate your football knowledge rather than lack of class.

To all fans, of all teams: Enjoy the weekend. I wish your teams good luck. And let's all show some class and sportsmanship. Sat, 22 Nov 2008 03:36:31 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/292935 BruceS1G The SEC And The Next Best Three - Week 12 Picks http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/288896 Week 12 in the SEC brings us some grudge matches, bowl possibilities, and other teams hoping not to get caught looking ahead. Not a heavy-duty weekend, but possibly some interesting games.

Once again the Wadester will be contributing his opinions. Last week, he smoked his Dad by going 9 of 9. If he does that again, I am going to get his picks THEN write my blog.

As always, the oder of the picks are based on kickoff times.

GEORGIA at AUBURN: The Dawgs come into Tiger Stadium in their annual grudge match against a struggling Auburn team. The Bulldogs could be a might tired though after their slug-out with Kentucky last week. Georgia had several key players banged up in that game, including more nagging injuries to an already thin offensive line. But they will be facing an Auburn D that has also been wore down over the course of their disappointing season. Offensively, and I mean really offensive, the Tigers come into the game ranked 100th in the NCAA in total offense. I think that the Georgia defense should have little trouble in containing the Auburn attack and that Stafford and Company will be able to generate enough offense against the fading Tiger's defense to get the comfortable win. However, as is always the case when these two teams meet, it will be an emotional hard hitting affair. (Wade says that the Dawgs put the bite on the Tigers)

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA-MONROE at OLE MISS: Ole Miss looks to get their 6th win and bowl eligibility this week. IMO, the Rebels might be the best 5-4 team in the nation as they have played everyone very tough this season. Jevan Snead should have a record day against the Warhawks 108th ranked defense. I think this will be a tune up for Ole Miss as they get ready to make the trip to Baton Rouge next week. (Wade also likes the Rebels in this one)

SOUTH CAROLINA at FLORIDA: The Old Ball Coach comes back to visit his old stomping grounds this weekend and instead of bring a wide-open offense, Spurrier will be bringing one of the best defenses in the nation to the Swamp. And he will need it going against a Gators thrashing-machine that has been blowing up defenses with ridiculous ease lately. The really tough part for the Gamecocks is that Florida has also been playing some great defense of late. The Gator's D has shut down LSU and Georgia in the past few weeks and both of those teams sport much better offenses than the SC attack. I look for Spurrier to spring some surprises on both sides of the football, and their defense may slow the Tebow Express down somewhat, but it is not going to be enough. The Gators will get another "W". (Wade is going with the Gators)

MISSISSIPPI STATE at ALABAMA: One of Bama's offensive lineman dubbed this year as the Revenge Tour 09. And one of those teams high on the Tide's payback list is the Bulldogs, so I don't think this will be a Bama team that is looking ahead. While Mississippi State has been playing well defensively (they rank 19th in total defense nationally), they have been horrid on the offensive side. Bama has been playing pretty good defense this year (ranked 4th in the nation) and this will probably be a long, hard night for the Dogs RBS and QB. I am not expecting this one to be close and I think the Tide will pound it out against the Bulldogs. (Wade is on record predicting an undefeated run for the Tide, so a win here is a given for him)

TROY at LSU: This might be a dangerous trap game for the Tigers. Coming off a hard fought loss against Bama last week, and no longer a part of the SEC or national picture, this team could come into this game less than enthusiastic. With Lee continuing to have problems with opposing team identification, it will be interesting to see how much playing time he sees before the true freshman Jordan Jefferson gets his chance. The LSU defense needs to be wary of a wide-open passing attack deployed by Troy (for those of you keeping score, this is the Tony Franklin offensive system). If LSU doesn't come into this game wide-awake, they could get a rude awakening. It might end up being close, but LSU should get this win. (Wade picks LSU to get the win)

VANDERBILT at KENTUCKY: This is a very important game for Vandy as they strive to become bowl eligible. Kentucky has their 6 wins but if they can pull out wins against Vandy and the Vols, would end up with a very respectable 8-4 for a young team. Vandy has a tougher road with games remaining against the Vols and then Wake Forrest, so that sixth game might still elude them. After starting off 5-0, the Dores are trying to avoid a total collapse in the second half of the season. The latest was the 42-14 shelling by the Gators last week and Vandy has to be having some confidence issues. I think Cobb and the Wildcats will be too tough for the Dores and they are going to have to look elsewhere for that elusive 6th win. (Wade doesn't think that the Dores have a chance)

Now for the non-SEC games as chosen by the commenters. And the pickings are slim for this week with the lack of any big games on the slate.

Once again, I will weigh in on three different matchups that are outside of the SEC. While none of these games are particularly vital to clearing up the BCS picture, there are some key conference games.

OHIO STATE at ILLINOIS: This is an important game for the Buckeyes. If they can get the win over the Illini, and then Michigan next week, they will have secured at least a share of the Big 10 title and a shot at a BCS bowl berth. There is also the revenge factor as it was the Illini that handed the Buckeyes a surprise loss last year that almost eliminated them from the BCS NCG. This year the Illini have struggled with inconsistent play from their star player Juice Williams. In their loss last week to W. Michigan, he was a dismal 20 of 45 with a pair of picks. This week he is going up against a far better defense and I think the Juice is going to get a serious squeeze. LOL Imagine how the OSU haters will come out of the woodwork if the Buckeyes get to a BCS bowl. (Wade likes Ohio State in a big win)

NORTH CAROLINA at MARYLAND: In this game both teams need a win to stay in contention for the ACC title, but the real issue will be which Maryland team decides to show up. The Terps have been playing Jekyll and Hyde all season and I am sure that it is making their fans crazy. They have been perfect in their home games, but then totally collapsed last week against Virginia Tech. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels are having their best season since 1997 pulling out several gutsy, last minute victories. Last week they bullied what had been a tough Georgia Tech in an easy 28-7 win. The once-backup-now-starter QB Cameron Sexton has turned in some strong performances since TJ Yates went down earlier in the season. Even though the Terps have been playing well at home, I think that the Tar Heels will pull out yet another tough win. (Wade agrees with me on this one as well)

CALIFORNIA at OREGON STATE: This is another must win for the Beavers as they try to stay even with USC in the Pac 10. Last week they looked very good in dismantling UCLA and Jacquizz Rodgers continued his running ways in slashing the Bruins for 144-yards. Sean Canfield has looked good in replacing the injured Lyle Moevao, although it is not clear who will be starting at QB. Speaking of not clear, Cal's Tedford continues to juggle his QB's, naming Riley this weeks starter. Last week, it didn't matter who was the QB as the USC defense body-slammed the Golden Bears. I suspect the same thing this week with Rodgers running wild thru the Cal defense. (Wade is picking the Beavers to get the win)

So there it is, my choices (and Wade's) for this week.

Fri, 14 Nov 2008 03:55:05 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/288896 BruceS1G What Went Down in Week 11 - The Way I Saw It http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/287235 Another week down and we are a little closer to clearing up the SEC and the BCS picture. While the SEC title game is now locked, the BCS picture still has a way to go before it is totally clear.

What is clear is that I have my mojo back. This week I went 7-2 for a total to 50-18. However, as good as that sounds, I was smoked by a 12 year old. The Wadester was a perfect 9 of 9 - including hitting the Wyoming - Tennessee game dead on the head. I am taking the kid to Vegas...

Now lets look at what happened this week...

GEORGIA over KENTUCKY: Georgia managed to bounce back from their thrashing at the hands of the Gators, and get the win at Kentucky. But they sure didn't do it easily. Kentucky QB Randall Cobb carved up the Dawgs defense and very nearly pulled off the upset. This is two weeks in a row that the Georgia defense has not looked very good as UK gouged them for 226-yards on the ground. They did manage to come up with the key play when they picked off Cobb in the final seconds of the game after UK had reached the Dawgs 13-yard line. This week also saw Stafford, Moreno, Massaquoi, and Green get the offense clicking, piling up 520 yards of offense. However, in spite of the late INT, Cobb proved that he is going to be a force to reckon with in the SEC as he finished with 82 rushing yards and was 12-20 for 105 yards in the air. He and his UK teammates are going to cause some headaches for the SEC East defenses this year and next.

SOUTH CAROLINA over ARKANSAS: Only Steve Spurrier could come up with a win while alternating QBs every other play. The Old Ball Coach rode this mix and match system to put 34 points on the board. The rest was up to the stifling SC defense that produced six sacks and held the Hawgs to just 54-yards rushing. The tough season continues for the Razorbacks.

This week will see Spurrier square-off against his old team the Gators. I think that is going to be a very interesting game. I am anxious to see who will win the battle between the tough Gamecock's defense and the powerful Gator offense.

WYOMING over TENNESSEE: It is a very sad day for the Vols when a 3-6 MWC team can come into their house and get a win. Tennessee QB Nick Stephens was the best offensive player the Cowboys had, chunking one INT that set up a 4-yard TD drive and then another that went for a clean pick-six. Tennessee only had one real drive in the game that netted them their lone touchdown. Even the Vols defense looked bad in giving up 167-yards rushing to the 111th ranked offense.

This is a Tennessee team that has just quit. It looks like they will be mailing it in the next few weeks with games remaining against Vandy and Kentucky. I don't see a win in either one of those for the Vols.

AUBURN over UT-MARTIN: It wasn't very pretty, but Auburn did right the ship righted somewhat in picking up the win. However, as late as midway through the 3rd quarter, UT-M had the game tied at 20. It wasn't unitl two Kodi Burns runs in the 4th quarter - one for 31 the other for 58-yards - that the Tigers finally sealed the deal. Burns had what might have been his best game of the season as he ended the game with 158 rushing yards and 12-20 for 130-yards in passing. But what has been a steadily declining Auburn defense yielded 323-yards of offense to the FCS Skyhawks. And it is not going to get any easier for the Tigers as Georgia comes to visit this week and they end the season two weeks later in Tuscaloosa.

There has been much discussion in print and over the airwaves about the status of Tuberville at seasons end. I can't help but wonder how much this has affected and will affect the Tigers in their remaining games. I know that from what I have read, heard, and learned from talking with Auburn fans there is a lot of dissatisfaction in the Tiger-nation. I guess we will have to wait and see how that turns out, and whether a couple of big, late-season wins could change the landscape.

ALABAMA over LSU: This was a game that both sides had been anticipating all season. After Bama's early successes, it seemed that this matchup might be the big battle in the SEC. And even though LSU's two losses took some of the tarnish off the game, it still turned into an old fashioned SEC slugfest. For both teams, turnovers became the deciding measure. Bama had an uncharacteristic 3 turnovers in the first half, with one leading to an LSU TD and the other costing the Tide a scoring opportunity. However, it was the LSU turnovers that turned out to be the costliest as Lee was picked 4 times - one returned for six and another killer in OT.

Bama's defense came through when it had to. They managed to hold Scott to 92-yards rushing and made the big play in overtime. On offense, JP Wilson ended up 215-yard on 15 of 31. Glenn Coffee had 126-yards rushing and Julio Jones led all receivers with 128-yards on 7 catches. None of which was bigger than the last one - a 24-yard reception that gave the Tide a first and goal in overtime that led to the winning QB sneak by Wilson. This was the first real test of adversity for Bama and I thought that they showed some character in coming from behind.

This was a tough game for both teams, and certainly LSU gave Alabama all that they had. This rivalry is only going to continue heating up as both teams struggle for dominance in the SEC West. I was very pleased to see that both teams conducted themselves with class and sportsmanship throughout the hard-hitting and much hyped game.

FLORIDA over VANDERBILT: The red-hot Gators jumped all over the Dores early and never looked back. This game was in the bag before the first quarter was over. Florida just flat out whipped Vandy on both sides of the ball. I will give Meyer some credit though - he could have named his score in this game, but pulled most of the starters early in the third quarter.

Florida's next big test will be South Carolina and we will see if the Gator offense can chew up one of the top ranked defenses in the nation. To be totally honest, right now Florida continues to look like the most complete team in the nation.

Now for the Next Best Three...

USC over CALIFORNIA: USC's offense had another week of struggles but with their defense playing shut-down football, the Trojans didn't need a ton of points to win this game. All night, the Trojan defense harassed both Cal QBs relentlessly and thoroughly stuffed the Cal rushing attack - they finished with only 27 net yards. And even the Trojan's struggling offense managed to post 411 total net yards.

I have read a lot of comments on the message boards and blogs about the weakness of the PAC 10 and USC being overrated. I don't think most of those posters have seen this team play (other than the loss to Oregon State). If they had, and if they knew anything about football, they would realize that this is one of the best defenses playing college football today. Any team that can hold a FCS team like Cal to 165-yards of total net offense and only 3 points is playing damn skippy-good defense. By way of contrast, even the great Florida defense allowed Vandy 264 total net yardage and 14 points. The Trojans lead the nation in 4 of 5 defensive categories and are number 3 in rushing defense. Any team that has a defense playing this well will be competitive against anyone.

UTAH over TCU: The Horned Frogs had every opportunity to win this game and can blame only themselves for letting it slip away. After outplaying Utah for all but the last minutes of the game, they allowed the Utes to drive 80 yards to the winning score with just 48 seconds left on the clock. TCU lead this game in every category except the one that counts - the score.

A rant and an observation. Why in the hell do defensive coordinators abandon the schemes that have kept them in the game to go to the so-called prevent defense? In my mind, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. TCU had slammed the door on Utah all night only to allow them to go 80-yards playing a loose, no-pressure defense. For the life of me, I just don't understand it.

IMO this Utah team is not a BCS contender. I don't care what their record is, I just don't see this team as being able to really compete with any of the undefeated or 1-loss top 10 teams. They were slammed by a TCU defense that, though highly ranked, was gutted by Oklahoma (436 net yards). After having watched them play a whole game for the first time, I am not impressed.

TEXAS TECH over OKLAHOMA STATE: Wow. What an offense. 629-yards of total offense. 78% on third downs. Harrell goes an insane 45 of 55, 456-yards and 6 TDs. And they weren't even really trying in the 4th quarter. Like them or not, this is an offensive machine. The defense did better than I expected in holding OSU to a Big 12 respectable 368 total yards. But their best defense IS their offense and so far this year no one has found a way to do much more than slow them just a little. Unfortunately, this offense won't face a top-notch defense until bowl season and it may be then before we see what they are really made of - and if their defense can win a game for them. Till then, I don't know if anyone in the Big 12 can stop them.

That is the wrap. I will try to have the next pick em posted by sometime Wednesday. Another big slate of games awaits us this weekend as we grow closer to determining the final matchups. Be sure to let me know as soon as you can about the Next Best 3 games. I'd like to thank everyone for their input over the weeks - it has made it challenging.
Tue, 11 Nov 2008 06:55:32 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/287235 BruceS1G The SEC And The Next Best Three - Week 11 Picks http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/284544 The SEC heads into week 11 and two teams have the opportunity to clinch the their division titles. Others are playing for pride or to just try and salvage seasons. Either way, there should be some emotional, hard-fought games this weekend.

Once again, Wade has decided to help his dad with the picks. The last time he did that, he actually topped me in the SEC picks. I think I can take him this week.

As always, the oder of the picks are based on kickoff times.

GEORGIA at KENTUCKY: It is a battered and dazed Georgia team that is headed to Lexington this week. No need to rehash the beat-down that the Gators administered to them last week, but now the Dawgs have to get their acts together as they face a decent UK. Kentucky eked one out last week against MSU, but I don't think they will pull it off this week. Georgia has something to prove and I think that they will be able to handle the Wildcats. (Wade says the Dawgs kill the Wildcats)

ARKANSAS at SOUTH CAROLINA: The Razorbacks are coming off a huge win against Tulsa last week and this team has been improving from week to week. However, this week they are going against one of the best defenses in the nation (3rd in the nation in total defense) and I just don't think the Hogs offense is that much improved. While SC may not score many points, whatever they score will be enough for the win. (Wade also agrees that SC will get the win)

WYOMING at TENNESSEE: The Phil Fulmer era has come to an end at Tennessee and I think that much of the Vol-nation is breathing a sigh of relief. It will be interesting to see if this this team lays down or if they can man-up for the last few games. Wyoming would seem to be the perfect team to come and take the sacrificial beating - a role they have been perfecting all season. As bad as they have been this season even the Vols will be able to beat-up these Cowboys. (Wade likes the Cowboys in the upset. He says that the Vols have just sunk too low)

TENNESSEE-MARTIN at AUBURN: Tommy Tuberville could be the next coach headed out the door. There has been a lot of buzz in the local papers and radio to that effect. If the Tigers drop this game to a FCS opponent it might be more sooner than later. I can't imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth on the plains if they do lose the game. As poorly as they have been playing, I almost hate to go with the Tigers, but surely they can win this one at home. (Wade also thinks that Auburn should get the win)

ALABAMA at LSU: This game has been anticipated by both teams all season and will be a real grudge match. For Alabama, a win clinches the SEC West and a trip to Atlanta. Not to mention the Tide's first chance to defend their #1 ranking. For LSU, a win over Bama could redeem an otherwise disappointing season and keep some slim hope alive for the Western crown.

I am going to try and put away my crimson glasses and look at the matchups subjectively:

Bama defense vs LSU offense: LSU comes in with a tremendous rushing attack. They will need it against the nation's 2nd best rush defense, holding opponents to just 65.6 rushing yards per game. Alabama's defense is also ranked 4th in the nation in total defense. In the last two games, the Bama D has been absolutely suffocating. A key for LSU will be for them to be able to crack that defense and get Charles Scott room to run. The weakest part of the LSU offense is the play of QB Lee who has already tossed 10 interceptions - two of which were costly TD returns against Georgia. If LSU can't get the running game going, then Lee is going to be forced to throw often and that could be very dangerous for the Tigers.

LSU defense vs Bama offense: LSU's defense has been less than spectacular in their two losses this season, ranking 6th in the SEC. Alabama's offense has been pretty vanilla this year, primarily relying on the rushing attack to pound out the wins. JP Wilson as at times looked great while at other times looking just average. However, he has been smart with the ball and has not made any huge mistakes. I would bet that LSU will sell out on defense to stop the run and force Wilson to carry the offense. This could be a double-edged sword for the Tigers as their defensive backfield has shown some vulnerabilities.

To sum it up, this will be a tough game for the Tide. But real championship teams are supposed to win the tough games. This is a game that Alabama should win, but it will take a solid four quarters to get the win. Last year this game came down to a last minute fumble return for the LSU win. This year LSU is not as good of a team and Alabama has definitely improved. In the end, I think that the Bama defense will be the difference and they will get the win. (Wade points out that the Bama win is just one more stop on the march to the NC)

FLORIDA at VANDERBILT: Surprisingly, the last three games the Gators have played in Nashville have been tight with Florida only winning by an average of 9 points. This is a much improved Vandy team, but they are facing a red-hot bunch of Gators that have destroyed 2 top-ten opponents. As much as I like the Vandy defense, I just don't think that they will be able to slow these Gators down very much and with Meyers' desire to make a statement for the BCS pollsters, he will hang as many points on the Dores as possible. (Wade says that the Gators will slaughter the Dores)

Now for the non-SEC games as chosen by the commenters.

Once again, I will weigh in on three different matchups that are outside of the SEC. These three games all have major implications in conference championships and the larger BCS picture. The Next Best Three this week are...

CALIFORNIA at USC: Ever since the loss to Oregon State in September, USC has been on a tear thru the PAC 10. They are sporting the #1 total defense in the nation, and the 10th best in total offense. Pete Carroll is already worried about not getting into the BCS mix and has been vocal about it this week. That means that the Trojans are going to be looking to make some noise against one of the few top 25 teams they face. Meanwhile, Jeff Tedford continues to play musical chairs with his QBs. Last week, he started the Kevin Riley, but after his leaving the game against Oregon with a concussion, the previous starter Nate Longshore was called upon to finish the game. So far this week, Tedford has not announced his starter, but I don't think it is going to make much of a difference. The Trojans are looking to sew up the PAC 10 and the Bears are just one more obstacle in the way. (Wade says that USC will just be too much for Cal)

TCU at UTAH: This is a huge game for both teams in terms of both the MWC crown and a possible BCS berth. Utah comes in ranked #8 in the latest BCS poll with TCU at #12. Both teams are in the top 20 (TCU 17th, Utah 20th) nationally in scoring offense. However, the Horned Frogs come in with a defense that is ranked 2nd in the nation in total defense, 1st in rushing, and 3rd in scoring. This does not bode well for the Utes who struggled in last week's 13-10 win over New Mexico. If the Utes repeat that same sloppy offensive performance it is going to be a very rough game. Even so, I think that the Frog's defense will make the difference in this game and hand Utah their first loss of the season. (Wade thinks that Utah is the better team and will get the win)

OKLAHOMA STATE at TEXAS TECH: Another game in the Big 12 that has major BCS implications. Also another game where the Big 12 South continues to cannibalize itself (From SEC fans: welcome to our world). Texas had tried to run the gauntlet and came up short against Texas Tech. Now it is Tech's turn to try and seal the deal. This game will feature not only two of the better Big 12 QBs in Harrell and Robinson, but also two premiere receivers in the NCAA: Tech's Michael Crabtree and OSU's Dez Bryant. As has been the case in the Big 12 this year, this game promises to be an offensive shootout. I would have to say that the offenses are about equal but I would give the Red Raiders an edge on the defensive side of the ball. More than likely this game will come down to whoever has the ball last, but I think that Texas Tech finds a way to win. (Wade says that OSU struggled with Mizzou and won't be able to hang with an even better Tech team)

So there it is, my choices (and Wade's) for this week.

Thu, 06 Nov 2008 05:04:20 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/284544 BruceS1G What Went Down in Week 10 - The Way I Saw It http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/283515 Another weekend, another shakeup in the Top 10. Will the carnage ever end?

This week I was a perfect 7 for 7 in the SEC (with no help from Wade, thank you!), but tanked big time (0-3) in the Next Best 3. That brings my running total to 43-16.

Now lets look at what happened this week...

OLE MISS over AUBURN: The downward spiral continues at Auburn. Just like last week, this game started out in Auburn's favor, but as the game progressed they seemed to have lost their poise and composure. Sadly, this looks like a team that has thrown in the towel for the season. Meanwhile, Ole Miss continues to impress me this season. I think that next year a lot of folks are not going to be real happy about seeing them on their schedule. And for all the jokes, I must say that Nutt looks like he knows how to turn a team around.

ARKANSAS over TULSA: This game gave proof to the fact that teams that put up gaudy numbers in second rate conferences are not necessarily good teams. Tulsa came into this game with the number 1 ranked offense in the nation, posting video game-like numbers on some ho-hum opponents. But against what is a lower-ranked SEC opponent, they were exposed as the pretenders that they really are. Petrino and the Hawgs continue to show improvement from week to week and I think that they will continue that trend into the next season as well. It will be interesting to see how they progress for the remainder of the season.

KENTUCKY over MISS STATE: UK went in a with a different QB and used a strong defensive effort to hang on to the win and become bowl eligible. MSU's season continues its downward slide after having high hopes to continue building on last years' success. I think a good question might be whether or not Sly Croom gets another season or if he is shown the door.

ALABAMA over ARKANSAS STATE: While the offense started out a little slowly in the this game, the defense made sure it was never in doubt. The Red Wolves never got inside of the Bama 35 for the game and the defense put six points on the board via an INT return. The offense did crank it up in the second half as the running game became unstoppable. The Bama defense continues to improve and it seems that the loss of Cody has not had an adverse effect at all. Chapman has stepped in and played excellent at the NG position that is so crucial to the 3-4 defense (I might note that one of my FN friends, an Auburn fan, believes that the defense is actually better with Chapman). Bottom line is that the Tide did what it was supposed to and totally dismantled a lesser team. Next week in Baton Rouge will be a much bigger challenge.

FLORIDA over GEORGIA: Even at 49-3, this game was not as close as the score indicates. The Gators completely dominated the Dawgs in every phase of the football game. And Meyer had no problem running up the score as much as possible. I think next year Georgia might want to rethink any over the top touchdown celebrations. Florida continues to make an argument for being one of the best teams in the nation right now. If they beat Alabama (assuming Bama won't lose 3 in a row) in SEC title game, I would have to agree that they deserve a very strong consideration.

SOUTH CAROLINA over TENNESSEE: How fitting is it that it was after yet another loss to Spurrier that Fulmer was shown the door. I would be willing to bet that when Spurrier heard the news, he had one of those smirky-smiles going. Fulmer will finish out the season with the Vols and I am not so sure that he will pick up another win. Even Wyoming doesn't appear to be a given. While I have little sympathy for Fulmer, I do feel for his players. Meanwhile, SC has a resurgent Hawgs team this week and then has to face the Florida buzz-saw. It will be interesting to see how the good SC defense does against the Gators.

LSU over TULANE: LSU bounced back from their dismal performance of last week and took care of business against the Green Wave. They also did not make the mistake of looking ahead to this week and Alabama. Well, maybe just a little bit, as they didn't play a spotless game. Once again Lee had problems with team identification and gifted the Green Wave with a pick-6. Lee finished the game 8 out of 20 for 99-yards. He will need to be much sharper against a very good Bama secondary or it will be a long day on the bayou.

Now for the Next Best Three...

CALIFORNIA over OREGON: I thought Ducks were supposed to like the water. It surely appeared that these Ducks didn't take to the water very well in a game that was played in what looked like a monsoon. This was a sloppy game in sloppy conditions and the Bears took advantage of Oregon mistakes and converted them into the winning difference. Oregon blew their lead in the Pac 10 as well.

GEORGIA TECH over FLORIDA STATE: Just when it was looking like FSU might be turning things around, they manage to find away to give one away. After fighting back from a 24-10 deficit, they fumble away the winning score in the endzone. The Jackets looked like a different team after QB Nesbitt went down in the third quarter. But the lone second half TD proved to be enough to hang on. I continue to be impressed with Georgia Tech and their throw-back triple option offense as they are now in the lead in the ACC Coastal Division.

TEXAS TECH over TEXAS: Two things really stand out to me in this game:

1. Once too often Texas relied on McCoy to save them and this time he did all he could but he can't play defense too.
2. Neither team displayed defensive brilliance in this game, but Texas had the most glaring choke when they let Crabtree split double coverage and score the winning TD.

I had said in my picks that Texas had to establish a running game to take the pressure off of McCoy. Their failure to do so allowed the Tech defense to pin their ears back and rush McCoy hard the whole game.

But in the end, lack of defense cost Texas the game and almost cost Tech. While the offenses appear to be great in the Big 12, I still wonder if it is more likely the lack of any kind of decent defensive play that allows the offenses to look so good. This is a question that may not be answered until the bowl season.

That is the wrap. I will try to have the next pickem post by Wednesday. There are several big games to look forward to this weekend and I am looking forward to seeing the national picture get even further clarified. Let me start hearing the nominations for the Next Best Three games for the upcoming week.

Now for a unabashed Homer moment: ROLL TIDE. #1! Sorry, but I just had to get that out of my system. Tue, 04 Nov 2008 00:14:01 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/283515 BruceS1G The SEC And The Next Best Three - Week 10 Picks http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/282255 My Picks in Week 10

My friends and readers, first an apology for the lateness of this post. I have been fighting a virus all week and I have gotten behind. However, dragging myself from my sick bed, I am now ready to go forward with my fearless picks. (Gives a nice excuse if I tank on all the picks - I can always blame it on my fever!)

Unfortunately, the Wadester has abandoned me in my time of need, so I am on my own this week. (I hate to admit it, but he actually bested me in the SEC picks.)

Now for the picks.... As always, these are in the order of the kickoff times.

AUBURN at OLE MISS: This has to seem like the season that will never end for the Auburn faithful. There seems to be much turmoil and angst on the plains and last week's slamming in WVU only magnified the issues. For the first time the Tigers had the look of a team that has given up. Ole Miss on the other hand, has been one of the surprise teams of the season. Even in their losses, they have been competitive till the end. The Rebels defense has looked pretty good, and Jevan Snead has continued to improve from week to week. Adding Auburn's pelt to the trophy case, along with the Gator hide they already have, would be a real bonus for Coach Nutt. I think that the Rebels will be too much for the Tigers and the preppie crowd in Oxford will have a fine outing.

TULSA at ARKANSAS: I have heard all the hype about Tulsa and their great offense, but I remain a bit skeptical. Looking at their schedule, they have run up impressive totals against less than great competition. Sure, they have looked dominate in C-USA play, but now they are stepping into the SEC realm. Granted, Arkansas is not at the top of the heap in the SEC, but I have to think that even a so-so SEC team is going to be a lot better than, say UAB or Central Arkansas. Even in their games against their weaker conference brethren, the Golden Hurricane (where did they get that name in Oklahoma??) have given up a lot of points, ranking 69th in points allowed nationally. Their total defensive ranking is even worse at 86th. Arkansas has shown improvement in the past several weeks in beating Auburn and playing UK and Ole Miss to the wire. I think this might be their week for a big win and I am going to take the Hawgs in an upset.

KENTUCKY at MISS STATE: Several weeks ago, I would have chosen UK in this one with out a thought. However, now the Wildcats are coming off a bludgeoning from the Gators, and I am not sure how much they have left in the tank. Miss State struggled with a mediocre Middle Tennessee State team and their 168-yards rushing was the highest of the year. This game almost feels like a toss-up, and even though UK is starting a freshmen QB, I am going to give the edge to the Cats.

ARKANSAS STATE at ALABAMA: Its homecoming for Bama. They are coming off a big win against the Vols. Hype it all they want, but the Red Wolves aren't in the same league with the Tide. Call the SPCA, because there are going to be some wolves get seriously abused.

FLORIDA at GEORGIA: The Big Party. And this one will decide who will be representing the SEC East in the championship game. Not a lot of love lost between these two teams especially after Georgia's "Gator Stomp" of last year. Right now it is hard to argue against Florida playing the best football in the SEC, if not the nation. Urban Meyer has been hell-bent on winning big the past few weeks and I am sure he would love to pile it on the Dawgs.

Lets look at some of the key matchups for this premiere game:

UGA O-line vs FLA D-line: The Georgia offensive continues to be a patchwork design. They played well against LSU allowing Moreno to rush for 163-yards on 21 carries. This allowed Stafford to be very effective in the play action passing attack. But the Gators have been playing solid defense, ranking 6th in the nation if scoring D and 12th in total defense. The Gator pass defense has been pretty reliable as well giving up an average of only 170-yards per game. This looks like a tough task for the Dawgs.

UGA Defense vs Florida Offense: Everyone knows about Tebow and his abilities. Like him or not, you have give him his props. Already dangerous with the Tebow/Harvin combo, Florida has a newly found rushing attack with speedy RBs Demps, Moore and Rainey. This additional running attack is only going to make the Gator's passing attack that much more dangerous. I know that Georgia's run defense is supposed to be good, but LSU gashed them for 188 net rushing yards on the way to putting 497 total net yards on the Dawgs D. I don't see the Gator offense as being worse than LSU's so I think UGA is going to have a lot more trouble keeping them off the scoreboard.

In the end, I think that the Florida offense has too many weapons for the Georgia defense. And I think that the Gator's defense will overwhelm the already weakened Dawg's offensive line and force them to be one dimensional on offense. And that is never a good thing. Gators get the SEC East crown.

TENNESSEE at SOUTH CAROLINA: What a tough spot for Phil Fulmer. He probably needs the win to have any hopes of keeping his job. Even worse is that he is facing his nemesis Steve Spurrier. It doesn't look good for ol Phil. I think the Ol Ball Coach will take great glee in driving in the last nail. The Vols offense at best is bad. And SC has pretty decent defense. So this looks like another loss for the Vols as SC wins this one at home.

TULANE at LSU: Tulane couldn't have picked a worse time to have to come to Tiger Stadium. After the recent (ugly) loss at the hands of the Bulldogs, the Bengal Tigers are going to be very fired up and looking to take the hurt to someone. I think this one will be ugly early. However, the Tigers shouldn't get caught looking ahead to the Bama visit.

Now for the non-SEC games.

Once again, I will weigh in on three different matchups that are outside of the SEC (At least one significant game being played this week). The Next Best Three this week are...

OREGON at CALIFORNIA: Being a QB at Oregon ought to come with hazard pay. Now down to their 3rd string QB, a JC transfer Jeremiah Masoli, but finally looking to have gained some stability. Masoli was fairly solid in the Ducks win over Arizona State and they remain tied for 1st (with USC) in the PAC 10. But the Ducks also have a solid rushing game (you know how I like the good running attack) that is ranked 5th in the nation. They will need to be fairly strong running the ball facing a pretty good Cal defense. However, Tedford is back to his QB-shuffle tricks and Kevin Riley will get the nod - for this week at least. In spite of their defense, I don't think Cal has had enough offensive consistency, and I think the Quack Attack picks up a big win.

FLORIDA STATE at GEORGIA TECH: FSU has quietly put together a 6-1 season thus far as Bobby Bowden continues his quest to outlast Jo Pa. The Seminoles are tied with Maryland atop the Atlantic division in the ACC but have been living dangerously, having had to come from behind for wins the previous two weeks. This week they are facing a Jackets team that has seen their QB struggle (actually he has down-right stunk) and their defense show some weaknesses against the Cavaliers. As much as I love the good old triple option attack, I think that the Noles are playing too good on the defensive side for a Jackets squad with QB problems.

TEXAS at TEXAS TECH: Another week, another undefeated team to face the Longhorns. So far the Horns have risen to the challenge behind the incredible play of Colt (He Should Be Stallion By Now) McCoy. This weeks challenger is another BIG 12 gunslinger, Graham Harrell and his favorite sidekick Michael Crabtree. The Horns secondary better saddle up because they are going to on the run all night in Lubbock.

For the Red Raiders to win this game though, they are going to need to figure out how to stop the Texas running game and make them one-dimensional. This is going to be a big task for the Tech defense that hasn't exactly been terrifying. In fact, Tech's best defense has been their offense.

The key for Texas in this game is to establish a strong, ball controlling running game. Take some of the weight off of McCoy and force the Tech DBs to move up to protect the edges. This will setup McCoy and Shipley to work the vertical passing game.

A lot has been said and written of this game by the talking heads and pundits, and it seems that they are about equally divided in their choice of a winner. I think it is fairly clear-cut: the team with the best DEFENSE will win the game. In my opinion Texas does have the better defense, but they will be sorely tested. They have to be able to attack the huge gaps that the Tech O-line employs and get pressure on Harrell. This in turn will cause the Raiders to have to shorten their splits and make it more of a strength vs strength game. In that department, I think that Texas has the edge. Also, Texas has an edge with Will Muschamp at Defensive Coordinator. Muschamp has always had an attacking style at defense that will be well suited for chasing Harrell.

As much as it goes against my homer desires to see the Horns fall and the Tide move up, I think in the end that Texas will make it through the last game of this tough stretch and remain undefeated - at least until the Big 12 Championship Game.

So there it is. Again, I am sorry for the lateness of the post, but at least I made it under the wire. Comment as you like, but respect the rule of no cheap smack without something to back it up. Bring some facts. Bring some substance to your position. Demonstrate your football knowledge rather than lack of class.

To all fans, of all teams: Enjoy the weekend. I wish your teams good luck. And let's all show some class and sportsmanship. Sat, 01 Nov 2008 01:48:08 GMT http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/282255 BruceS1G
