http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/182955

Liverpool and Celtic are both in some sticky situations in the closing stages of the 07-08 season, and things are looking grim for both clubs.

Liverpool, though still in the Champions League, gave up a shocking own goal and finished with a 1-1 draw against English rivals Chelsea in the Champions League Semifinal.

John Arne Riise, who came on early for the injuried Fabio Aurelio, accidentally headed in Chelsea's Salomon Kalou's cross into the goal in the 94th minute. Chelsea now hold an away goals advantage and Liverpool will have a mountain to climb next Wednesday in the 2nd leg at Stamford Bridge.

Though it may not seem bad, Liverpool have struggled at Stamford Bridge, failing to score in their last 8 games there, a streak reaching back to October 2004.

Meanwhile, in the English Premier Liverpool seem to be out of contention from 1st place Manchester United, who are is a dismal fourth place, 12 points behind Man U. However, some good can be seen from Liverpool's season, even if they are elimated from the Champions League next week. Liverpool have almost secured 4th place in the EPL, which is significant because it earns you a trip to the Champions League, which Liverpool and its fans desperately want.

Liverpool are positve that their scoring drought at Stamford Bridge will end next week, saving the Reds from further frustration

Celtic have a huge mountain to climb in Scotland. They've been eliminated from the Champions League and Scottish Cup and are currently hanging on my a thread to first place of the Scottish Premier. Celtic are in fact two points ahead of Rangers, but have played 3 games more than their Old Firm rivals.

At the same time, many fans have been calling for manager Gordon Strachan's firing from his position, saying that a trophyless season is unacceptable and if the Celts lose the Premier League Gordon should be fired. Somehow though, the Bhoys keep hanging on and just might be able to run away with the SPL crown if they can beat Rangers this Sunday at Celtic Park.

The last Old Firm meeting of the season is a neccesary win for the Celts and could turn out to be the most crucial game of the year. If Celtic win they'll jump to five points ahead of Rangers, but if they lose Rangers would practically have the SPL trophy in their grasps. Celtic need to win every remaining game this year, so focus is neccesary and they're determined to win, if not for themselves and for their fans then for their manager.

Gordon Strachan and the Bhoys face a steep uphill battle for the Scottish Premier League title.
Thu, 24 Apr 2008 03:12:03 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/182955Stauff NationLiverpool's Euro Dreams Live On

Though Celtic may be out of the competition, our other YNWA club, Liverpool, is still fighting hard as ever for a place atop Europe's Elite throne as winner of the Champions League.

After their loss in the final to AC Milan, Liverpool look to be out with a vengence, and as of late their level of play has been uncomparable. In the final 16 matchup, Liverpool defeated Serie A leader Inter Milan, fairly easily I might add, finally proving to the world that they are still a team to be feared.

They were drawn against English rivals Arsenal in the quarterfinal, and with the first leg of the matchup being played at Arsenal's Emirites Stadium, most saw the game as a chance to end Liverpool's Champions League run.

Liverpool had other plans.

The Reds looked determined to quiet all the remaining doubters and came out of the gate storming today. They played fantastic defense and had several early shots on goal, surprising many in the stands. However, in the 23rd minute Arsenal took the lead off an Emmanuel Adebayor goal. Was this truly the beginning of the end for Liverpool?

Steven Gerrard and the men of Anfield would never go down without a fight. Arsenal's lead lasted but three minutes before a Gerrard cross found the foot of Reds striker Dirk Kuyt and landed into the back of the net, leveling the scoreline and immediately silencing the Gunner's passionate crowd of over 60,000.

After this the game went back and forth, with both sides getting off an array of shot and both goalies, Pepe Reina for Liverpool and Manuel Amunia for Arsenal. Both had outstanding performances.

The game finished in a 1-1 draw, right where many expected the two English sides to finish.

Though Arsenal looked to be in command most of the game with more possession than Liverpool, the Reds now have the advantage going into the second leg next week. Liverpool are known for their immense, game-changing crowds at Anfield that help push the home side to victory on European nights such as the arriving matchup. With the crowd behind him, Liverpool look to be better off in this very important and crucial matchup.

Arsenal Captain William Gallas kept a close watch on Liverpool's Fernando Torres, who had a quiet game. Liverpool will need a better showing from him in the second leg.

Liverpool fans are sure to come out in full force for an important derby matchup like this. Euro fans will remember this game for a long time, for sure.
Thu, 03 Apr 2008 02:56:42 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/174341Stauff NationThree-peat Dreams Turn to Nightmare: Celtic Eliminated 1-0

I've entered my post from Celtic FC Supporters Group here as well. Enjoy.

Yes, soccer fans. You read the title correctly. Celtic have now made their exit from the Scottish Cup after a 1-0 loss to Aberdeen.

Celtic controlled most of the game and held most of the possesion, but Aberdeen's defenders played at their best. The Bhoys powered groups of shots at Aberdeens goal and had the Dons on their heels from the very beginning. The attacking began less than a minute in when Massimo Donati took a shot from over 25 yards away, quickly followed by a close header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink that only missed by inches and instead deflected over the bar.

Aberdeen didn't threaten until the 41st minute, but Stephen McManus quickly dove to stop a threatening cross from Aberdeen's Barry Nicholson. Celtic had largely controlled the first half, and though it ended 0-0, it seemed that a goal from Celtic would be arriving shortly.

It was not meant to be. Aberdeen came back from the break with more determination, and that determination finally paid off when Darren Mackie scored from 10 yards away in the 69th minute.

Without much time left for an equalizer, Shunsuke Nakamura, Donati, Vennegoor of Hesselink and sub Georgios Samaras all had shots on goal after Aberdeen took the lead, Shunsuke's being a free kick that was nearly missed by Aberdeen keeper Derek Soutar.

Sadly the equalizer never arrived, and Aberdeen will now head on to the semi-final to meet Queen of the South.

They say a picture says a thousand words...

Sadly, while Celtic could have easily scored three or four goals, they finished with none in a game that needed strong finishing from the Bhoys. We've seen it several other times this season, as sometimes they can put in five goals and other times they have trouble putting in any. Finishing can prove to be a dangerous enemy just as much as it can be a greatful friend, and the exposure of this fatal flaw will give other teams such as Rangers an insight of where they can stop Celtic. Their Achilles Heel this season.

So what now? Well the only competition that remains is the race for the Scottish Premier League. Celtic, after a 0-0 tie with Dundee United, will face Gretna, a team who have had their fair share of worries this month, on Sunday. Celtic are on a dry spell at the moment, winning their last game on March 1st, and hopefully can take the U-turn onto the right path this weekend.

Knowing Gordon Strachan, he will tell the media that his players really played well and it was a major disapointment failing to win the Scottish Cup this year, but deep down he knows there are still players on the bench (ie Derek Riordon (who made an appearance against Aberdeen today), Evander Sno, Darren O'Dea, Barry Robson and even Ben Hutchington and Koki Mizuno) can easily fight their way to the first team. The first team starters know this as well and will hopefully pick up their game, at least we hope.

Celtic are 3 pts behind leaders (Ohhh, the) Rangers (are ****) with one more game played over them, so it's going to take a big effort from our bhoys to pull away with the crown. Though I hate considering losing as a positive, it will give the team more rest that it needs to get three vital points from every last and final game from here to the end of the season, the game against the Huns being the most pivotal.

Liverpool do not play until Saturday when they face Reading at Anfield.
Tue, 18 Mar 2008 23:52:05 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/167459Stauff NationCeltic game Postponed; Liverpool Come From Behind to Win

Celtic's game against Motherwell set for today was postponed after heavy rain made the pitch at Fir Park unplayable. It's the 3rd time Celtic and Motherwell's match has been postponed since the tragic death of Motherwell's Phil O'Donell in December. A new date hasn't been set yet, but Celtic's next game is Celtic's quarterfinal Scottish Cup replay on Tuesday against Aberdeen, who they tied 1-1 at Pittodrie in the first quarterfinal game. Celtic capped off a great save in that game, with Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink keeping them in the Scottish Cup after scoring in the 90th minute. I'll deliver a match report then.

In SPL news, Hibernian take 3rd place over Dundee United after winning 2-0 over Kilmarnock. Dundee United play tomorrow against Rangers (BOO!) Gretna's horrible week, after bringing in administrators to help the failing club, just got worse after losing 3-0 to Aberdeen. Sadly, Gretna brought almost no fans with them to Pittodrie.

Other SPL scores:

St Mirren 1 - 1 Hearts, Inverness 0 - 1 Falkirk

Tomorrow's game:

Dundee United vs Rangers

Referee Dougie McDonald inspecting the playing field at Fir Park this morning. The game was postponed for a 3rd time.

Liverpool today took on Reading at Anfield. The game got off to a quick start, and after a foul near the box, Reading went ahead in the 5th minute thanks to a free kick from Marek Matejovsky.

They didn't keep the lead long, though. Liverpool took one back in the 19th minute after an amazing shot from defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano scored his first goal of the season from over 20 yards out.

After staring out the game sloppy, Liverpool took control and Ryan Babbel and Xavi Alanso, who missed Tuesday's game against Inter for the birth of his son, came close to scoring after Mascherano's goal.

Liverpool then took the lead immediately after the half, thanks to an easy header from Fernando Torres, who also scored the lone goal in Liverpool's win over Inter, guarenteeing them a place in the Champions League quarterfinals. It was Torres' 9th goal in 6 games.

Midfield Maestro and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard had been the source of many oppritunities for Liverpool in the first half, and he resumed his gift for making plays like there wasn't even a break. After curling in the free kick that met Torres for the go-ahead goal, he almost set up Babbel for a 3rd, but Babbel couldn't get a good shot off.

Reading began to press in the closing stages of the game, and even brought their keeper Marcus Hahnemann even came over to help with a Reading corner kick. When the corner was cleared, Alonso just missed scoring from his half into the open Reading net.

The game ended in another Liverpool win 2-1, their 5th EPL win in a row. As of right now, Liverpool has sole possession of 4th place, as Everton will play Fulham on Sunday.

In other news Manchester United finally took the top spot in the EPL after a 1-0 win over Derby.

Today's other EPL Scores:

Arsenal 1 - 1 Middlesbrough, Chelsea 1 - 0 Sunderland, West Ham 2 - 1 Blackburn, Portsmouth 2 - 0 Aston Villa,

Tomorrow's games:

Everton vs Fulham, Wigan vs Bolton, Birmingham vs Newcastle, Manchester City vs Tottenham

Sat, 15 Mar 2008 19:49:26 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/165377Stauff NationYNWA Update: March 12th

One side is rejoicing over a well earned trip to the quarterfinals in the Champions League. The other is groaning after dropping two very important points to a team 19 points behind them in the table.

Mhm, just when everyone began to count Liverpool out after a lackluster Champions League Group Stage showing, they've beaten Inter Milan, previously one of the favorites to win, at Anfield 2-0 AND on Tuesday at San Siro in the 2nd leg 1-0.

People were amazed after Liverpool's amazing victory after the 1st leg, but even with a 2-0 padding, people were still doubting Liverpool of progressing. After all, Inter have only lost 1 game all season in Serie A and have scoring threats like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Figo and Julio Cruz makes them one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the world. That and the game would be held in San Siro, Inter's home stadium, which they have turned into a fortress this year made the draw an entertaining one.

Both sides went back and forth in the first half, with both sides getting off dangerous shots and Liverpool's keeper Pepe Reina and Inter's Julio Cesar both making great saves on several occasions. Half time approached with a 0-0 tie.

Both teams returned with a quick pace with numerous tackles and yellow cards being dealt to both sides. Inter were dealt a huge blow when defender Nicolas Burdisso was kicked out of the game for two yellow cards in the 49th minute. Inter fans were furious. Burdisso was the 2nd Inter player to recieve a red card in their games against Liverpool. Marco Materazzi also received a red card in the first leg at Anfield. One can speculate if neither of these players were red carded the outcome might have been different.

In total 9 yellow cards and 1 red card were given out to both sides.

Burdisso's red card gave Liverpool more room to run freely with the ball, and Liverpool finally grabbed the lead with a well placed shot by Fernando Torres in the 64th minute.

Inter had many chances to capitalize, and Ibrahimovic had let several seemingly easy goals slip away before Torres' goal.

Congratulations to Liverpool as they become the 4th team from the English Premier to enter the quarterfinals (8 teams involved) and work for their 3rd final in 4 seasons.

Celtic, on the other hand, were not as lucky in their middle-of-the-week matchup against Dundee United. Celtic were coming into the game 4 points behind Rangers and getting three points out of the game would have been a boost to the team. This wasn't meant to be, however.

Gordon Strachan decided to make several changeups in the lineup before the match. Evander Sno, who hasn't seen much action this season, came in for Massimo Donati and Georgios Samaras started over big Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Scott Brown also returned from his suspension for Paul Hartley.

Celtic came out strong, with Shunsuke Nakamura hitting the post in the 3rd minute and Scott McDonald coming close to scoring in the 30th minute. Celtic held possesion for most of the game but failed to find the back of the net. Dundee United also came close once when Craig Conway narrowly missed the goal in the 55th minute.

However, neither side managed to score and the game finished in a 0-0 draw. Celtic are now 3 points behind Rangers, playing one game more. Rangers have the chance of extending their lead over the Bhoys to 6.

The winner of the SPL has been up in the air all season and probably won't be decided until the two teams meet face to face again.

The picture speaks for itself...

Both sides are looking to win on Saturday when Celtic take on Motherwell and Liverpool face Reading.

Until then, don't forget that you'll never walk alone.
Thu, 13 Mar 2008 05:10:41 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/164095Stauff NationCeltic and Liverpool Update

Congrats, YNWA. We now have 4 members. Hooray!

Celtic and Liverpool both had busy weeks and both played well. Let's review:

Liverpool

Liverpool have had a very busy week. Dubai International Capital (DIC), who have been looking to by shares of Liverpool, have expressed interest to become the minority owner of Liverpool, owning 49% of shares, while Tom Hicks would become the majority owner, keeping his 50% and buying 1% of George Gillet's share. Gillett and Hicks, American owners of the Texas Rangers as well, are very unpopular with Liverpool fans and even Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez has expressed his anger with the owners.

Liverpool have also streghtened their chances of finishing in the top 4 by beating Newcastle 3-0 on Saturday, with goals from Jermaine Pennant, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. They are now tied with Everton with 56 points and share 4th place.

Celtic

Celtic's Euro dreams ended on Tuesday with their exit from the Uefa Champions League with a 1-0 loss to Barcelona at Camp Nou. Xavi scored in the 3rd minute for the Catalans, who controlled the ball for most of the 1st half. Celtic fought hard in the 2nd half, however, and came close to scoring a few times.

This can be seen as a positive, though, since now Celtic can rest and focus on the Scottish Cup and the SPL title.

Celtic faced Aberdeen on Sunday in the quarterfinal of the Scottish Cup at Pittodrie, as well. Celtic kept control for most of the game and got in a dozen shots, a few going off the crossbar, but Aberdeen went ahead in the 79th minute. It looked as if Celtic's exit from the Scottish Cup would be inevitable when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink leveled in the 90th minute for the Bhoys. The replay will be played at Celtic Park, and the winner will play 1st Division squad Queen of the South.

Next week Celtic plays Dundee United at home on Wednesday and Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday.

Liverpool will face Inter Milan in Italy in their hopes to progress in the Champions League, and are coming in with a 2-0 lead. On Saturday they face Reading at Anfield. I'll be back on Wednesday with results of both games.
Sun, 09 Mar 2008 19:03:59 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/162675Stauff NationChampions League

I'm excited. 2nd leg of the Champions League begins tomorrow with Celtic at Barcelona.

To progress, Celtic need to win 2-0, as Barcelona won Leg 1 at Celtic Park 3-2 off two spectacular Lionel Messi goals. Beating Barca like a daunting task, but coach Gordon Strachan and his players are ready.

It's certainly going to be a tough game. It'll be one that Barca and Celtic fans remember for a while. Celtic will come out smarter and more determined than they were in the first leg. We'll see how they do. Go Celtic!

Liverpool play at Inter on the 11th, which should also turn out to be a fantastic game.
Tue, 04 Mar 2008 05:25:13 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/160484Stauff NationYou'll Never Walk Alone

For those of you who don't know, Celtic and Liverpool's fans are known world wide for their passion and love of the game. The thing both have in common is "You'll Never Walk Alone". You'll Never Walk Alone (or YNWA for short) is the song that both Celtic and Liverpool fans sing before all their home games. The song was written for the play "Carousel" but it wasn't adopted by Celtic and Liverpool fans until British group "Gerry and the Pacemakers" sang a version of it in 1963.

There's a friendly arguement between Liverpool and Celtic fans over who started singing the song first, and no one really knows for sure.

YNWA is a great traditioin with both teams and listening to the fans sing it is really amazing.

Here's a video of Celtic fans singing it before their game with Barcelona in 2004.

<a
