Well it is that time of the year again. The most overhyped sporting event you could imagine. A day that football junkies LIVE for.

To think that there are really two events that allow EVERY team think that they have a chance, a shot, maybe they have fixed what went wrong the year before. Draft day is only second to opening day when it comes to giving so many football fans hope. Then again, when you think about opening weekend half the teams lose. So, here's to the draft.

If you want to stop in and talk draft, football, or just random stuff, stop in. Maybe I'll even get inspired and turn this into a full blog. Then again maybe not.

Sat, 26 Apr 2008 15:34:46 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/183997BSchwartz07A Way to Level the Playing Field in the MLB
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/89561

With all of the talk today centering around the Mitchell Report I thought I would tackle a baseball issue that has nothing to do with steroids.

Baseball is getting out of hand, to sign an average player these days it is going to cost you around $10 to $15 a year. Then you have guys like A-Rod that stand to make double that. While some small market teams have succeeded in breaking into the playoffs and even win a title from time to time the truth is that you have to pay to play in the MLB.

(A-Rod cashed in, just hours before the Mitchell Report)

There have been countless talks of a salary cap in baseball, and the truth is that there is already one in place. The current system basically sets a Luxury tax that teams must pay if they spend too much. In theory it should work, the money goes from the higher payroll teams and is given to the small market teams. Sort of like a Robin Hood idea. This is also something that the union can agree on, because it does not limit the amount players can make. The problems have come with some teams still going crazy with the spending while the small market teams use the money given to them to line the owner's pockets.

(the MLB has been liked to money for years)

You see one major draw of the NFL is that your team is in it when the season starts. Browns fans told everyone that would listen that this was their year (no one wants to listen if you say it every year to no avail), now they are closing in on a playoff spot. Meanwhile teams that dominate like the Patriots will likely have to let a few starters go after this season, most notably Samuels or Moss. This means come next season New England's chances of another start like this one aren't as great.

(Thanks to a strict cap in the NFL players like Moss will have to choose between winning and cashing in. Also teams like NE don't dominate for 6-7 years causing fans of other teams to lose interest)

So how do we achieve this goal in baseball? The union has stated MANY times that they are not willing to have a salary cap. The way I see it now is the best time to impose one. You see with the plan that I am about to propose not only is it fair to the players, but with the Mitchell report coming out if the players strike, people will welcome not enhanced talent. So it is a win either way.

Ok here it is...

The best way for a cap to work in baseball would be to have a two tier cap. Basically what that means is that you have 2 caps, if you pass the first cap you will have to pay a luxury tax (similar to the system now). The second cap is no negotiable, you WILL NOT GO OVER. Looking at espn.com's listing of salaries from last season I would set it up like this;

Luxury cap set at- 120,000,000. Any team over that mark will have to pay a luxury tax. (by last season's numbers this would only apply to the Yankees and Red Sox, but trust me others will cross that line very soon.)

Salary Cap set at- 180,000,000- Only the Yankees would be over this cap by last season's figures. I considered raising up to the 195 million mark to just allow teams to sit as they are, but I feel that you should EASILY be able to field a 25 man team at 18 million.

Ok, so this seems easy enough, but the union would never go for it. If it was an option they would have done this long ago. My system does not stop there. You see the reason that some of the smaller teams can not succeed is because they do not spend. So to solve that I would impose a cap MINIMUM.

Yes, you would have an amount that teams MUST spend every season. Thinking of this it would not be saying that you must sign a guy or anything like that. What you do is set the amount that must be spent, if a team fails to spend that amount they will have to pay their current players the amount that they are currently under the cap.

I would look like this...

The cap minimum would be set at 60,000,000. In the case of last season's Tampa Bay Rays they only spent 24,124,200. This leaves them 35,875,800 under the cap. So you would divide that amount by 25 and each Rays player would receive a bonus of 1,435,032 at the end of the season.

(If the Marlins had to spend the money anyway they would stop with this bi-anual fire sale)

How would that help baseball? Well in cases like the current Marlins the team would know that they have to spend the money anyway why not go get some talent with it? I assure you that if a team is forced to spend 60 million the smaller teams would bid for better players, thus making them a competitor. Not to mention fans will be more inclined to cheer for a team that can win. You win games you sell tickets and merchandise, then you make more money.

(With more parity in baseball, empty parks like this one will become a thing of the past)

With this system it would balance the MLB out without making crazy changes. The union would buy on it because it would not actually take money away from players. Most of all players like JD Drew and Andruw Jones don't get outrageous contracts, well maybe they do but we can't control everything.

(Dodgers fans get used to this look, $18.1 million for a guy that hit .222 last year is flat out silly)

Thu, 13 Dec 2007 18:33:23 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/89561BSchwartz072007-08 BCS Playoffs (The Way it SHOULD Be)
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/85478

A few months before the NCAA Football season started I proposed a BCS playoff system. I did what I could to not only come out and say that we needed a playoff system, I actually gave times and dates for all of the games. This showed that a playoff system was not only probable, but practical as well.

As we have seen the 2007 season throw us for a curve week in and week out. Now we are left with two teams that not everyone agrees with. On Sports Center they had a poll titled "Did the BCS get it right?". 48 states voted that the BCS had not picked the two best teams to play on January 7th. I will let you guess what two states thought it was right on the money.

The truth is that you can make a case for a number of teams this year, so why not playoffs?

My system is pretty simple, it is a 12 team playoff set up similar to the NFL's system. The seeding will be given based on your BCS ranking and if you won your respected conference. With the system I made earlier in the year I picked winners for each game, this time I have elected to pass, the point of this is to show a system, not to say who I feel should play in the big game.

Now, we start with our 6 BCS conference winners-
ACC- Virginia Tech
Big 12- Oklahoma
Big East- West Virginia
Big 10- Ohio State
Pac 10- USC
SEC- LSU

Those teams will be re-seeded to the #1-6 spots based on their BCS ranking.

Now we will also have 6 at-large bids. Those will go to the 6 non BCS conference teams ranked the highest in the BCS. Based on the polls they would be.
Georgia
Missouri
Kansas
Florida
Hawaii
Arizona State

These teems will be seeded 6-12 based on their BCS rankings.

Teams with a higher seed will be given home field advantage. It is only right to reward the better teams from the regular season. There also would not be re-seeding in each round. This would allow for some office pools and such, also it will make the system a little easier to follow.

Here is how the games would break down.

<img number of off days for the team that actually goes to the title game, (Ohio State this year will have 51 days off, LSU will have 37). Think about the Super Bowl champs playing another game in mid April. Do you think they will be as sharp as they would be in early February? In this system both teams that play for the title will have 16 days of rest prior to the title game.

Also with this schedule teams will have ample time if they lose in the semi-finals. The would then likely play in a January 1st or 2nd bowl.

You may love or hate the idea of playoffs, but as I see it this system leaves out the 13th team in the nation, the current system leave out the #3. A plus 1 format would still be up for debate with the rankings this season. Also, this way you will usually have a mid-major in the mix, which leaves a good shot at upsets and a Cinderella story.

Also you can't tell me you wouldn't watch these match ups, it would make for some good football.
Tue, 04 Dec 2007 22:01:59 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/85478BSchwartz07Making Some Sense of the 2007 NCAA Football Season
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/78751

This season has been arguably the best season of college football in years. The way I see it most seasons about 90% of games are over before they begin. But 2007 let us know that would not be the case from day 1 when Appalachian State took down Michigan in the Big House. Now we have see countless top 25 teams fall to teams that left us saying "no way", and "South Florida has a football team, that's news to me." We have watched as #1 teams fall to schools that usually would be down 60 by the third quarter of the game. Stanford took down mighty USC with their second string QB in the game.

(Appalachian State set the tone for this season Week 1, little did we know how many more small schools would follow)

Myself I have always been a somewhat casual NCAA football fan and a diehard NFL fan. Meaning that I follow both, but I will only go out of my way to watch a few NCAA games. But in 2007 I can't take my eyes off of the NCAA action. I just can't get enough of the close games and upsets. To watch Alabama come SO close to knocking off LSU, and to see Kentucky win in triple OT (as Woodson took a cheep shot to his back). It has been magical, while the NFL has left something to be desired for anyone that lives outside of the New England area.

So this is a great year for college football, right? Not so fast. This season may destroy everything we know of college football before it is over. You see NCAA football is really based on over 100 teams playing, but normally only about 3 or 4 teams have a realistic shot at winning it all. This season that is not the case. We have seen about 2 dozen teams have some outside shot at a title at one point or another this year. This really messes with the system. You see since the BCS has been around there have been one or two teams that have complained that their 1 loss or undefeated team got sent away from a title shot. At this point in the season we are looking at 9 teams in the top 25 with 1 or no losses. There is not nearly enough time for this to "work itself out". Most likely we will be looking at 5 to 6 teams that are deserving of a title shot come the end of this regular season.

(it isn't who gets this at the end of the season, it is who will even get the chance to play for it)

Where do they go from there? Well think about this, who do you leave out? LSU? Now I may give the SEC a harder time than anyone on here, but the truth is that if they win out they deserve to be there. LSU's only loss came in triple OT. If LSU looses expect riots everywhere south of Ohio and East of Texas. An LSU loss will assure the SEC of being shut out of the national title. Which is not good business when the title game will be held in Louisiana.

(Can you keep LSU out of the title game if they finish with only 1 loss?)

Alright next on our list is Oklahoma, they can be lumped into a group with Missouri and Kansas. Whichever team wins the Big 12 will be given a shot at the title, right? Not so fast. If Oklahoma wins out they have a loss to an unranked team, so how are they better than a team such as Ohio State that lost to an Illinois team that is currently #20 and on the way up. Missouri wins out and their only loss is to Oklahoma so that makes it a little easier, but still they are not hands down the team to beat.

(Bob Stoops will have a lot more to yell about if his team doesn't get a shot at a title this year)

What about West Virginia? You want to talk about an easy road, take a look at these guys. They have not faced a team that is currently in the top 25 this season. And if they take down Cincinnati this weekend look for the Bearcats to drop from #21 back to the field leaving WVU still with no top teams on a cake schedule.

(This may be as close as WVU gets to a title)

Our next victim is Ohio State. No one wants the Buckeyes in the title game this year. Truth is that after being waxed by Florida last season (in multiple sports) people need a break from the Buckeyes. While OSU's only loss came to the #20 team in the nation, and with an officiating crew that will likely be fired from the Big 10 at the end of the season (<a With Illinois, Penn State, Michigan, and Wisconsin making moves into the top 25 that "cake schedule" looks like the Bucks just made it look easy.

(A win this weekend will most likley get the Bucks a trip to the Rose Bowl, no the BCS title game)

A team that people have really forgotten about is (9-1) Arizona State. Their only loss was to a very good Oregon team, who will no doubt finish higher than the likes of Colorado, Kentucky, Illinois, or South Florida. So why is this team an after thought? This team actually beat the Colorado team that took down Oklahoma, and if they win out they will have taken down both teams to get by Oregon. Yet it will take nothing short of a miracle for them to get a ticket to play for the title.

(If Arizona State can get by USC and Arizona they could be back in, but just ask Oregon that is easier said than done)

Should we even look at the mid-major teams? Just ask the Sooners. Boise is back on track, and Hawaii has still not been taken down. What's Hawaii's problem? Location, Location, and Location. No one wants to come play games all the way out there, nor does this team want to play all away games. So they are left playing glorified high school squads. Supposedly Boise State showed the world that these teams were for real last season. All the talk was about how the BCS will stop beating up on these smaller schools, just one year later and an undefeated Hawaii team is on the outside looking in. They even have four 2 loss teams in front of them in the rankings.

(Didn't Boise State show us that mid-major schools are for real?)

But when you really think about it who is going to take a Hawaii vs. Arizona State national title game seriously?

More on that situation in a second, but for now the NCAA has one other problem. That big trophy they give away in New York every year. Who gets the Heisman? Again this is an award usually based on a guy that runs all over then NCAA on the way to a title shot. That guy does not exist this season.

(What about the Heisman? Who has been great this year?)

The easy answer is Tim Tebow, he could be the best RB in college football, and a top 3 QB all at the same time. But what has he done, really? 9 of his 23 TD's came against Western Ky, Troy and Vandy. 5 of his rushing TD's came against South Carolina. Even then his numbers are impressive. My issue here is that the Gators are hanging on to a top 25 spot for dear life. If they lose to Florida State they will be nothing more than another SEC team. So how has he dominated college football?

(Tebow has gotten all of the Heisman hype, but shuld he win it with 3 teams that have had an answer to his offense?)

Next we have Dennis Dixon, when this team has needed Dixon he has, well... stepped out. He had only 157 yards passing and 0 TD's against USC, and only threw 8 passes before being knocked out of the Arizona game. Usually Heisman winners have a signature game (Troy Smith over Michigan last year), Dixon does not have this. And with Oregon's latest loss expect him to fall off of the radar.

(With Oregon's loss look for Dixon to dissappear just like Matt Ryan)

So if not those two then who? Chase Daniel? In his big game against Oklahoma he had 2 Int to 1 TD.

The truth is that while this season will undoubtedly have more and more folks watching it is also going to destroy the way things are ran in college football. There will be multiple 1 loss teams watching the national title game from home. The Heisman winner will be debated over and over. 2007 will truly expose every flaw in the BCS, and show that even a +1 format will not fix this problem. The NCAA will have their hand forced and will have to institute some sort of a playoff system. People have issues with that saying that it would take away from regular season games, really? So you are saying that Ohio State Michigan this weekend would not matter? Two rivals bidding for one playoff spot. And fans will just turn off the SEC title game, who cares who wins that there are playoffs. Lets get real, if there is a playoff system there will be hundreds of teams vying for 8 to 12 spots, the drama will be there, even more. Fans or Georgia would have a little more to cheer for, same goes for fans of Virginia Tech.

(Georgia would love a playoff system about now, just ask Matthew Stafford)

Playoffs are years away, so the reality is that we have to live with what we have now. My suggestion? Sit back relax have a beer for me and watch this whole thing play out. It will be a good time for fannation because we will all "know who should play for the title". The entire BCS is going to crumble, but it sure is going to be fun to watch, that is unless your team is one watching the title game with 1 loss.

(Just sit back and enjoy, and if your team is down, this picture should explain that bad call)
Fri, 16 Nov 2007 21:01:56 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/78751BSchwartz07Let The Bidding Begin (MLB Off-Season Preview)

Well the World Series is over, and it is about time for everyone to guess who is going where. I figured I would throw my hat in the ring. I took at look at 13 players that are either free agents, could opt out of a current contract, or just rumored to be traded. While I do not claim to be an expert here, this is where I see everyone going.

Lets start with Miguel Tejada, the word is that he will be one of the first guys to be moved from the O's this off-season. While Tejada has been almost a complete bust in Baltimore I can see the Boston Red Sox rolling the dice on this one. Before the post season started I could have seen the Sox trying to improve at both the SS and CF position this off-season. Now that Elsberry has looked like he can fill that spot in CF look for the Sox to upgrade at SS. As for that guy playing for their rival, don't even think about it.

Verdict- Tejada traded to Boston

While we are on the Red Sox there has been a ton of speculation as to where Mike Lowell will play next season. Lowell has said himself that he has never hidden the fact that he love playing for Boston. And it seems like every time you get him together on a team with Josh Beckett it is World Series or Bust. Boston is a team that is known for spending, and I really have a hard time seeing this franchise letting the World Series MVP go. Just can't see it.

Verdict- Lowell stays in Boston

This may be a little bit of a shot in the dark, but I can see Boston adding one more player this off-season. Sox fans used to love him, then they didn't like him, then they hated him, right now they despise them, and in 2008 they will love him once again. The man I am speaking of is the Rocket himself. Roger Clemens has hinted that he would like to come back for one more season. The Yankees have done everything to rub all of their veterans the wrong way, and to be honest with you I just do not see him fitting into their plans next season. As for Boston, while they may not NEED Clemens they would love to see the guy that came up with Boston finish there.

Verdict- Clemens finishes up a long long career in Boston

As for the Evil Empire, they claim that they are going to try and cut back on all of the overpaid veterans. That said I'm not completely buying it. They will need to fill that open spot at 3B. While A-Rod is out of the question they will go for the next best thing. Miguel Cabrera is a very talented young 3B, and he is getting to the point that the Marlins have to pay him more than the $6.75/ hour that they are willing to pay their players. Cabrera will give the Yankees something that they never had with A-Rod, multiple hits in the post season.

Verdict- Miguel Cabrera is the next 3B for the Yankees

Staying in NY the Yankees pitching was a little suspect this past season, but they found some young pitchers at the end of the season that may give them hope for the future. With the loss of Roger Clemens they will once again look towards the next best thing. Which in this case will be Kerry Wood. Kerry will come at a huge discount because he has had so many injury problems. The Yankees will take a shot on the guy because if he finds a way to stay in the rotation they will hit the jackpot on this one.

Verdict- Kerry Wood signs with the Yankees

Jorge Posada's contract is up this season. Posada is a life long Yankee, and while they are looking to make quite a few changes I just can not see Posada playing anywhere else. Also you have to take into account that not only is this a team willing to pay to win, but they are going to lose touch with their fan base if they allow Posada to walk. He is almost at Jeter status, and I do mean ALMOST. While he may never be #2 he will be a Yankee next season.

Verdict- Posada stays right where he is

When talking about the Yankees there is one more player I can see coming to the Bronx next year. It is a little bit of a stretch, but when you think about it maybe not. While Giambi will most likely be dropped this off-season and Alex Rodriguez will be off to another team as well this leaves the Yankees with one huge need. That is to have someone hit the ball out of the park. You see they can preach this "we are going to bring up our own guys" and the "this is a new team" stuff all day long, but bottom line this is a business. And in the business of baseball 2 things put people in the seats, winning games and hitting home runs. With all of the changes winning games may not be immediate, so to keep the fans happy the Yankees will bring some power to their lineup. They will bring the career homerun record back to New York by sighing Barry Bonds. I know it seems crazy, but just think. Barry can DH, so he doesn't have to kid himself by hobbling out to LF and jogging after triples that should have been routine outs. Bonds also gets a short porch in RF so he can add to that HR number. And the Yankees get that power hitter that will keep the fans interested.

Verdict- "Now batting for the New York Yankees Number 25 Barry Bonds."

Ok I talked about the Sox and the Yankees so I have fulfilled my duty in writing a blog on baseball. So, lets move to some other clubs.

The Angels have been trying to get someone to protect Vlade in the order for the past few seasons. They will put in a ton of effort in the Alex Rodriguez chase, but in the end I see them falling just short. So in a desperate attempt to find some extra power for that lineup they eventually pay Boras' asking price for Andruw Jones. While this may give the Angles the best defensive OF in the league they will want that $20 million back come the end of the season when they paid about a million dollars for ever 10 points in Andruw's batting average.

Verdict- While they save $10 million by signing Andruw Jones over Alex Rodriguez, they don't get what they want when Jones finishes the year batting right around .200.

When it comes to center fielders none will get more attention this off-season than Tori Hunter. Tori will add a great deal to whatever team that he goes to. While he would be a perfect fit in Atlanta the Braves will not be able to afford him and expect to keep Tex past 2008. Philly would be another great place for Tori, but expect the price to get a little too rich for them as well. The only team I can see willing to shell out for this guy is the Mets. Now the Mets need pitching more than anything, and by the logic they have used in the past they will sign Tori Hunter. He will allow them to move Beltran to LF and will make this stellar line up even better.

Verdict- Unless Tori learns to pitch he will not be nearly as valuable to the Mets as he would be to someone else. But that's life.

The Braves will still be left with a hole in CF. And with all of the attention surrounding Hunter and Jones they will be able to snag Aaron Rowand under the radar. Rowand will be a complete change of pace from Andruw Jones. It will take Braves fans a little while to get used to seeing a CF run to get a ball, and not just lightly jog and dive at the last minute. While Rowand may not be a long term fix for the Braves he will be a great addition.

Verdict- Look for Atlanta to keep Rowand to a 1-2 year deal, he will do just fine and be somewhere else in a couple of years.

Sticking with the Braves they have not been close out games since Smoltz returned to the rotation. As for sending Smoltz back to the pen, don't hold your breath. And as far as I am concerned when someone like Smoltz has done what he as done for that team and the local community, as well as staying in Atlanta despite larger offers from other teams. He can do whatever he wants, and he was one of only two solid starters for that team last year. Now back to the issue of a closer, after Gonzalez had surgery, Wickman showed everyone he can pitch BP all day long, and anyone else that filled in was just sub par Atlanta could make a move for yet another closer this year. Soriano or Gonzalez will be the long term fix at closer, but look for Atlanta to bring in Marino Rivera to fill that position for the time being. He will put away all doubt when Atlanta has the lead in the 9th inning.

Verdict- This team needs pitching, Rivera will help, but they need a lot more than just that.

Tom Glavine has done everything but offer to play for free in his attempts to rejoin the Braves. This season look for Atlanta to take him up on that offer. Glavine would love to finish his career where he started, and he should. A move back to Atlanta would also allow Tom to spend more time at home with his family (who still lives in the Atlanta area). The Braves would get a number 3 starter and a lefty out of the deal. Seems like a win win to me. The only issue I have here with the Braves is that Leo Mazzone has been released by the O's and Atlanta has not made a single move to bring him back. Leo was a large part of the great stretch the Braves had, and just getting him back in this clubhouse will repair a lot of their Pitching issues.

Verdict- Glavine finally gets his wish to pitch in a Braves uniform again.

The Tigers were quick to jump the gun and add Edgar Renteria to their lineup as soon as the World Series ended. They also have opted to keep Pudge around as well. Detroit is out of the cellar for good, and will make a few more moves to battle in what may be the tightest race in baseball for the AL Central crown. I can see the addition of Yankees soon to be exile Jason Giambi. I know he has been hot and cold, but a move from the bright lights of New York will do this DH/1B a whole lot of good. While he may never be the star he was in Oakland he will defiantly be a good addition to an already great team.

Verdict- The Yankees will let Giambi go, but he will have his best season in quite some time for the Tigers.

Well, that is how I see it breaking down for now. I may be wrong I may be right, and I am sure this will stir up some great comments. I will try to respond to them all. 2008 will turn out to be a huge off-season. Where the pieces fall may determine who is celebrating this time next year.

Wait, did you really think I would write this whole thing and not put in my input on Alex Rodriguez?

Alright, here is my take on how the A-Rod saga will play out.

The way I see it New York and Boston are out right off of the bat. The Yankees want nothing to do with Alex, and the Red Sox just won it all without him. While he would improve an already amazing Red Sox line up, he just is not worth $30 million to that franchise. They will still sell out every game without him, and they will still contend for the title without him. They also do not want to add someone that is a proven choke artist in the post season.

Now as I see it this leaves the Angles, White Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, and the Mets.

While the Mets love to throw money around, I just can not justify adding A-Rod to a VERY talented and VERY young left side of the infield for the Mets. He just does not fit in that lineup.

From there it will just be a bidding war between the four teams from LA and Chicago. In the end I say that he holds out on signing so long that he allows the Cubs to get a new owner. On the off chance that that owner is Mark Cuban I will give it a 100% chance that Alex Rodriguez is playing his home games at Wrigley this season while Cuban watches with the bleacher bums.

Verdict- Cuban buys the Cubs. Rodriguez is their new SS.

Well, that is actually it for me. These are just a few of the names that have come up, I am anxious to hear everyone else's thoughts
Tue, 30 Oct 2007 20:39:05 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/72929BSchwartz07Exposing the SEC
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/72417

The SEC is an overrated over blown Confrence. There I said it. It's out there.

What? No! He didn't, he wouldn't. This is fannation suicide.

Or is it...
Read the blog then let me know.

As we all know everyone wants to come out and claim the SEC as the best conference in NCAA football. But lets take a good look.

When it comes to the top 25 the SEC bias is so obvious you can not help but to laugh.
There are only 3 teams in the top 25 with 3 losses. All from the SEC.
There is only 1 top 10 team with 2 losses, guess where they are from? Yep, the SEC
And the top ranked 1 loss team in the country? LSU, also from the SEC.

(As long as LSU wins out they can almost count on being handed a spot in the BSC title game, not only that it would be a home game for the Tigers)

LSU is getting #1 votes while they lost to a Kentucky team that is not only not ranked (which is saying a lot b/c about half of the SEC gets handed a top 25 ranking), but just lost to a .500 team. Meanwhile take a look at Missouri. Their only loss came from Oklahoma, who is 7-1 and #5 in the nation. But still LSU sits at #3 while Missouri sits at #9. The difference being that Missouri has to win out and have 8 other teams lose to have a shot at a national title. LSU just has to win out and hope for a loss from Boston College or Ohio State.

The SEC has really only played 4 top 25 non conference games this season. LSU demolished VT, but Cal also put away Tennessee. And all told they are only 2-2 in those 4 games.

We see teams like Tennessee blow a 21 point lead AT HOME and MOVE UP in the AP poll! What? Really? Are you kidding me? I know they won, but it was just sad.

Still not convinced? Well lets look at fair matchups, and the only way I can see to do that would be to look at the Bowl Games. This is a non conference match up that is supposed to match up even teams. Over the past 5 seasons the SEC is a mediocre 18-16 in bowl games. Hardly domination.

While I do not feel that the SEC is a bad conference, I have a hard time saying they are the class of the NCAA. If you want competition, look at the Big East. Not only are they 2-1 against the SEC this year, but they have had 6 or their 8 teams in the top 25 this season. Every team has at least 1 conference win. And even Syracuse the worst team in the Big East this season took down a Louisville team that was at the time #18 in the nation.

(Teams like UConn and S Florida have shown that the Big East deserves thier spot in the BCS)

If it is top teams you seek. Look no further than the Pac 10. While USC has been the class of that division for a while teams like Oregon and Arizona State have turned in great seasons thus far. Or even take a look at the Big 12. Teams like Texas and Oklahoma are making way for Kansas and Missouri.

So then my question turns to who anointed the SEC as the top conference? Is it that they have the best players in the NCAA? Well they last had a Heisman winner in 1996, and when I took a look they only have had a whopping 2 Heisman winners since I was born (1984). Compare that to the Big 10's 5, Big 12's 5, Big East's 3 and the Pac 10's 3 (all from USC). So USC has won more Heisman Trophies than the entire SEC over the last 23 years.

(the SEC's last Heisman winner)

Well if they don't have the top players maybe they win the National title every year. Well... that's not entirely true they have only claimed 2 national titles in the past 10 years! Again USC has them beat. When I did a study to see who has dropped the most over the past five seasons in poll positions the SEC had 4 teams make the top 25, but they also had 2 in the top 5 and boasted the most overrated team of the past 5 seasons Tennessee.

(USC has more national titles over the past 10 years and more Heisman winners than the entire SEC over the last 23 years)

This leads me to my question. What do people see in the SEC? How do the get a pass when they lose to their lower tare teams like Vandy or Ole Miss, yet that same pass is not extended to USC when they lose to a Stanford? I will tell you what I just do not see it.

The next time someone rips on Ohio State or Boston College by asking "who have they played?" realize that if you just claim that your conference is great. Then only play in your conference apparently people will buy it.

More to the story

Ok, I can admit when I miss a few things, and in this case I did. Sorry SEC fans. I have not been able to keep up as much as I would have liked to at this point in the season.

Anyway, by looking into every SEC schedule here is the SEC's breakdown against BCS schools, hardly impressive.
2-2 vs. Non Conference Top 25 schools
1-2 vs. Big East
2-1 vs. ACC
0-0 vs. Big 10
2-1 vs. Big 12
0-1 vs. Pac 10
There are also 3 SEC teams that have not even played a single game against a BCS team this season. The funny part about that is that two of those 3 teams played for the SEC title last season. While Florida will get to face 1 BCS team in a lowly Florida State squad at the send of the season. Arkansas will NOT FACE A SINGLE BCS opponent this season. How sad is that?
Sun, 28 Oct 2007 21:17:23 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/72417BSchwartz07My Leave of Absence from Fannation

Dear Fannation,

I have been a member of this site since this past April. It started out as just checking the truth and rumors, led to throwdowns, and eventually I was writing blogs. I have made friends on here, and a few people that just couldn't see it my way. But either way I loved talking sports. It was never about getting a win, or even convincing someone that I was right. If we all agree this site is just flat out boring.

Now, I leave next week for 45 days of training then I am off to Iraq for the following 6 months. I do not think that I will be able to get on here enough to compete in any of the tournaments that I usually love to be in. I would like to stay in the groups that I am currently a member, but whatever happens, happens.

I will keep this short and sweet. I wish every single one of you the best (even the Raider fans). Be sure to keep it fair, don't worry so much about people cheating, and keep it about sports. This is a wonderful site with great people. Do not let the few that want to ruin our fun get in the way of that. Other than that be sure to keep me, as well as all of our military members abroad in your thoughts and prayers. I will be back and ready to roll come April, and if I can get on here before then I'll be around.

Best Wishes, BSchwartz07

Tue, 28 Aug 2007 12:34:52 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/54474BSchwartz07Who is Over and Under Rated? True Ratings Of NCAA Football
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/49972

There has been so much talk of teams that are "over-rated" and "under-rated" all over this site. Well in the case of NCAA football I figured I could put this topic to rest. While a fan or two may say that their team is great, I don't really consider that a rating of a team. So to find a fair assessment of how a team has lived up to their hype I took a look at the top 25 standings over the last 5 years. I then took a look at how far a team climbed or fell from the pre-season rankings to the final rankings. If a team was not ranked I just gave them #26 to make this process a little quicker. This way you know where I am getting the numbers.

Understand that these top 25 lists are simply based on fact. You see a pre-season ranking is based on hype, and the final ranking is based on the team's performance for the entire season. In no way am I saying one team is better than another. I am simply putting out who is over and under rated.

****Interesting fact, of all of the teams to start or finish in the top 25 over the past 5 years Ohio State and Colorado State have an average of 0. This means that these two programs neither over nor under-rated. They are the only schools in the country to meet that criterion. ****

On to the top 25 over-rated schools of the past five years. Notre Dame and UCLA could be swapped.)

While you may or may not agree with these results, the truth is that I would like to see a better way to evaluate a team's "rating" without any bias. I personally was surprised to see USC and Notre Dame on the Under-Rated side of these rankings, but like I said I only used the facts.
Mon, 06 Aug 2007 22:53:18 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/49972BSchwartz07BCS Playoffs, A Look At What Could Be.
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/47934

There has been so much talk of a playoff in NCAA football, but all I see is talk. So what I have done is taken teams from last season and set up a playoff. This is what it could look like. I have included times and dates. This is not only feasible, but practical. It would allow 12 teams to fight to the finish. While the argument against this is that it would take away from the drama of regular season games, I disagree. Only 12 teams make the playoffs, there are 1 loss teams that would not make this list.

Use an 12 team playoff with automatic bids to the champs of;

Big 10

Big 12

ACC

Big East

SEC

Pac 10

Then you get 6 at large bids.

So last year would look like this (Judging by BSC rankings pre-bowl games.) Now you would have to re-seed the teams for the playoffs, similar to the NCAA basketball tourney, the second number would be their new seed.

Big 10- #1 Ohio State (1)

Big 12- #10 Oklahoma (5)

ACC- #14 Wake Forest (6)

Big East- #6 Louisville (4)

SEC- #2 Florida (2)

Pac 10- #5 USC (3)

At Large- #3 Michigan (7)

At Large- #4 LSU (8)

At Large- #7 Wisconsin (9)

At Large- #8 Boise State (10)

At Large- #9 Auburn (11)

At Large- #11 Notre Dame (12)

The top 4 conference champs would get a bye week.

#1 Ohio State

#2 Florida

#3 USC

#4 Louisville

So here are our first round games-

(9) Wisconsin @

(8) LSU

12:00PM December 8th, 2006

(11) Auburn @

(6) Wake Forest

4:00PM December 8th, 2006

(10) Boise State @

(7) Michigan

12:00 PM December 9th, 2006

(12) Notre Dame @

(5) Oklahoma

4:00 PM December 8th, 2006

(now I have to pick winners and losers here, don't take offense or judge the picks. The difference here, no controversy over who is in, also Ohio State gets 2 weeks off before the game as opposed to the 8 WEEKS THEY HAD OFF IN REAL LIFE!

Now our final issue is the other Bowl games, well that is an easy fix. Use them as consolation games.

Our Semi Final Losers would meet in the Rose Bowl

Boise State @

Louisville

Our Quarter Final losers meet at the Orange and Sugar Bowls

Auburn @

USC

(Orange Bowl)

LSU @

Oklahoma

(Sugar Bowl)

And our First round losers meet at the Fiesta and Capital One Bowls

Michigan @

Wake Forest

(Fiesta Bowl)

Notre Dame @

Wisconsin

(Capital One Bowl)

What I am trying to illustrate is that a full playoff system can be put in place. Who is hurt by this? Teams get a shot at winning a title. Fans get to see countless great match ups. Now I know that some Bowls would get the short end of this stick, but that is also an easy fix, the BSC Bowls (Fiesta, Rose, Orange, and Sugar) would rotate spots every year. I would even suggest adding one other bowl to the BSC Mix, I used the Capital One Bowl, but there are a few that could step in and fill that 5th spot.

That is how I see it working, let me know what you think, and again this is not about what team is better than another, I used NO BIAS when making this list, it is simply a realistic playoff system for the BCS.

Fri, 27 Jul 2007 00:03:35 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/47934BSchwartz07For Anyone That Throwsdown On This Site
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/23800

I have been a member of fannation.com since April, and have quickly become a veteran in the throwdown section of the site. While I may not have a gaudy 43-0 record, or a 29-2 most anyone on this site knows who I am, and I try not to shy away from truly controversial topics. I do want to say that I love this site, and I love a place where you can talk about anything sports.

Now, on to my true topic here. I have seen too many throwdowns on what needs to be done on this site. Those of you that have read my blogs in the past I love to add my input to things that are out there. Ex. Madden http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/20835, or NCAA football http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/21492. So here it is, what I think we should do about the throwdowns. (note many of these ideas are my own, and some are ideas that I have seen from others. I can not take complete credit.)

-Make actual throwdown leagues- More and more of the groups are putting together tournaments and leagues. Lets encourage this. Have a way for that league to have standings, a quick link to the matchups. Even throw in some playoff system to see who is the champion of that group. I would also like to make it to where the members of that group can be the only ones that vote, or not if you so choose.

-Lets have a feedback program on here. It is easy, as soon as you finish a throwdown with someone you will be able to fill out a feedback on that user. Have a couple of questions like.
-How quickly did this person respond? (scale of 1-5)
-Did the user stay on topic? (scale of 1-5)
-Would you consider this person honest? (scale of 1-5)
-Would you throwdown against this user in the future? (scale of 1-5)
-Then allow people to add any comments they wish to add

Have this rating show with the user. So say everyone gives you a five you would have a great rating. People that are on the sketchy side would have poor ratings. This way you can opt to not throwdown with guys that aren't on the up and up.

Obviously this system only works if you can only feedback with someone you have been in a throwdown with. Otherwise it would just flood with "ADAM LEE CHEATS" when people just see his record and nothing else.

-This would lead to some more changes- like give the person that makes the argument the option to accept the challenger. This will give people the option not to face people that they don't trust. Also people on here that have a real topic and get the "this is a dumb throwdown" response. If you want to come on here and talk about soccer or hockey you should be able to without someone telling you no one cares.

-Let the person that starts a throwdown make the rules- give some options to the users. You can choose who can vote, if that person is in a group. You can choose how long you have to respond (keeps people from having stale throwdowns, I know his is getting to be a problem. I even have two that are over a month old.).

-Put the throwdowns into groups- right now all you have is the "open" "in progress" "completed" and "closed". Make more options, such as NFL, MLB, or even let people have the choice to go by team. This way you can see what's going on with your team. This site has "My Truth and Rumors" why not "My Throwdowns?" Also this will allow people to have their throwdown seen for more than just the first few hours of arguments.

-Let the users call a truce if they wish- I have had a couple of throwdowns where foul play was suspected and both of us wanted to just delete the throwdown. I have also seen where someone takes the throwdown thinking it was about something else. Example- today I saw someone argue about the #2 WR in the NFL while the other is arguing that someone was the best #2 WR in the league. Easy to see how that is confusing.

-Either get rid of the leader board or make it a weekly thing- Too many people have become obsessed about making it on the leader board. I would use it to show who is winning the top group throwdowns, or update it with who has the best record that week/month. This will help with people trying to get a head.

-Fix the ??? problem- Like some other people on here I know that I'm not the best speller in the world. In order to make my throwdowns about the topic at hand and not about spelling I type my arguments in a document then paste them over. When you do this all of your ( ‘ ) become ( ???). Lately I have gotten better at this, but still it is annoying.

-Bring back the "who voted"- I know this just made matters worse of people crying cheater, but it lets you know who voted for or against you. I think it would stop cheating more than it would promote it. This really isn't a confidential vote, I mean come on. I ‘m in a throwdown where someone is telling me KG is the biggest free agent this year, the guy isn't even a free agent and somehow he is getting votes. I want to know who is voting for this guy. Don't believe me, check it out http://www.fannation.com/throwdowns/show/10709.

This is about all of the ideas that I have for now, as always let me know what you think. I love to see comments, and other ideas. Also, if this gets enough exposure then maybe a couple of these things can get done, you never know.
Mon, 25 Jun 2007 20:23:23 GMThttp://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/23800BSchwartz07
