Why is why so important?

Listening to sports radio and ESPN, I am tired of all the speculation around why Micheal Vick got into dog fighting. There are all kinds of theories and ideas.

Was it an effort to keep his hip-hop street cred?

Was this acceptable in his backwoods Southern upbringing?

As an athlete, is he addicted to violence?

And on and on and on.

My opinion is that many folks feel like they have been fooled. Micheal was suppose to be the good Vick! He was the superstar that could carry a team on his shoulders. And on and on.

7 more weeks!

Only seven more weeks until the season begins! I can hardly wait for kickoff. I've purposely avoided all the pre-season magazines and such just to get by. Reading stuff like that only makes the season that much further away. I hope this is a good football season, the anticipation before would make it anticlimatic if its not!

I am declaring myself and NFL Fan Free Agent

Well, its been a while since I posted another blog. 16 days to be exact. Too busy trying to survive the summer sports lull filled with nothing but baseball, the X games, and the MLS. That, and keep up with my five month old son. I wish I could say I was a baseball fan. At least it would give me something to do until the football season.

Less than 50 days left until the season kicks off (no, I haven't been counting, but a local radio station does). Boy, it can't come too soon. Its bad when you even look forward to pointless pre-season games! I am not even that much of an NFL fan except to play fantasy football. I have no allegience to a particular team - I live in Birmingham, AL , with the Falcons 2 hours to the east and the Titans 3 hrs to the north. Most of here are so consumed with Auburn or Alabama, we don't have the time to pay too much attention to the NFL come Sunday. I am leaning towards the Titans - their games are broadcast here.

Draft night a big night for the Hawks.

For some reason I feel compelled to keep up with the Hawks. Maybe its because their the closest team to Birmingham. Maybe its the awesome arena they play in. Maybe its because they play almost 30+ games on TV here, so I'd get to watch quality basketball. Maybe I like to think people and organizations can redeem themselves.

With the draft coming up, I am a bit worried about them. They are the only team with 2 lottery picks. And they don't know what to do with it. Trade it, or keep it? Big man, or point guard? I've even read that trading the picks makes things easier for them because it elimates a major decision. If they are that unstable upstairs, then the product will never be any good on the court. KG or Shawn Marion or even Amare would be a great draw, but would they be a better team? Looks like Atlanta is getting despirate for a quick fix.

Ponderings on this weeks events

Nothing in particular is really striking me this week, but I do have a few thoughts on somethings going on in sports:

I expected James and the Cavs to not play well in Game 1. Its their first finals, and the jitters were bound to distrupt their focus. The Spurs have been there, done that, got that ring. They know what to do. The Cavs will put up a fight, but expect the Spurs to win it all.

First thought when I heard the Ducks won the Stanley Cup. You mean they played hockey this season?
