Nationals Need To Re-Sign Christian Guzman

Hey Nats!

If you had asked me back in 2005-2006 what I thought of Christian Guzman, I’d have told you his $16 million dollar deal he signed before the Nats officially moved to D.C. was money down the drain.

I mean, Guzzie had hit over .300 once in his career with the Twins in 2001. In 2000 though, Guzman hit 20 triples. He was a good doubles and triples hitter. He has never gone above 10 home runs in a season. The rest of his time in Minnesota, he was a slick fielding shortstop with an average bat. Other than the .302 average in 2001 the highest he ever hit was .274, the year before he joined my beloved Nats.

Tim Russert, Baseball Fan

Since driving home from work yesterday when I first heard about Tim Russert’s death, I have been in the most profound shock of my life. Here was a member of my extended family, a Catholic (I’m an Episcopalian), who came into my house every Sunday morning for brunch with his show, 'Meet The Press'.

Tim was a HUGE Buffalo Bills fan. I don't think a Sunday went by during the season that, at the end of his show, he failed to get a 'Go Bills' in before his signature line 'If it's Sunday, it's Meet the Press'. But, there was a side to Tim Russert that not many people knew. He was a HUGE baseball fan. I can think back to I think 1994 when baseball's players last struck.

Ovechkin - Hart Trophy Winner?

The annual NHL awards are tonight and Alex Ovechkin is up against Malkin from Pittsburgh and Iginla from the Flames for the MVP of the league. Who do you think will take it home. I'm betting Ovie does. Was there a better story in the NHL this year than the Caps coming all the way back from last in the NHL to make the playoffs as the third seed in the East? Would the Caps have gotten as far as they did without Ovie?

Let Start With Something That Really Burns My ...

I've been away from blogging, but I'm back because one sports team in this town really has done us fans a horrific disservice. You all know who I am talking about. Dan Snyder and the Burgundy & Gold Empire.

Mr. Snyder expanded the Burgundy and Gold Empire considerably in 2006, when he bought three little radio stations on the outskirts of Washington and declared them "Redskins Radio." The venture has been pretty much a flop--the stations' signals are too weak for most fans to hear them at home or in the car. So now Mr. Moneybags has bought three more stations, including Washington's longstanding, dominant sports station, Sports Talk 980 (WTEM).

Hey Caps! Make Bruce Boudreau the Coach

Dear Ted & GM George McPhee,

Bruce Boudreau, the current interim Head Coach of the Washington Capitals, deserves to have the interim tag taken away and he needs to be made the Head Coach fulltime. this guy has breathed new life into the Caps players many of whom had obviously tuned out Hanlon. He deserves this shot for two reasons:

 1. According to several sources, Boudreau's teams have historically had strong power plays. The Capitals scored four man-up goals in his first two games, and the unit has had much more zip than it did under Hanlon. Boudreau said the solution could be as simple as having the players hear the same message from a different messenger: "Maybe with a different voice, they're doing it. Different messenger. We haven't tweaked a lot."
