As the immortal Foster Hewitt said at the opening of Hockey Night in Canada... "Hello, Canada, and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland."

The Stanley Cup Finals are here and Game 1 was quite a game. I'm sure Pittsburgh is hoping that Fleury falling on his face when the Penguins were coming out on the ice during the start of game 1 is not a bad omen.

I guess we will see as the series goes on but he was excellent in the 1st period of game 1 as I write this. Anyway I was reading Michael Farber's column on SI.com on The Journey of the Cup...

...and I got to thinking about a book I read a couple of years ago called "Why is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's Swimming Pool?" by Kevin Allen. It tells lots of interesting stories about the history of the Stanley Cup and various players experiences with the Cup.
Here is a timeline of some of the historic events and Journeys of the Stanley Cup.
1892 - Lord Stanley, Governor-General of Canada, announces he will donate a trophy to designate Canada's national champion.
1905 - the Ottawa Silver Seven dropkicked the Cup into the Rideau Canal as a joke.
1907 - The Montreal Wanderers becomes the 1st team to engrave the names of all their players, in addition to the team name on the Cup.
1924 - The Cup was left the Cup on the curb after the Owner of the Montreal Canadians stopped to change a flat tire.
1925 - The Stanley Cup unofficially becomes the NHL championship trophy.
1950 - The Detroit Red Wings captain Ted Lindsay became the 1st Captain to raise the cup over his head and skate around the ice with it showing it to the fans.
1964 - Red Kelly once told a story about how he sat his naked infant son in the top portion of the cup and his 3 month old relieved himself in it. "He did the whole load in the Cup. That's why our family laughs when we see the players drinking champagne out of the Cup." - Red Kelly
1971 - After Montreal wins the Stanley Cup, Canadiens' Captain Jean Beliveau skates around the ice with the cup over his head. His team-mates follow him and thus begins the tradition of the victory lap with the Cup.
1973 - Henri Richard wins the Cup for the 11th time establishing a record for a player having his name engraved on the Stanley Cup. Although Jean Beliveau has his name on the Cup 17 times (10 as a player and 7 as a team executive).
