Spain To Lay Claim On European Championships

Spain emerged victors in the semi-final clash with Russia and many were surprised that a 3-goal deficit still separates both teams. After a baptism of fire in the group stages and a comprehensive 3-1 victory against Netherlands, the Russians had established their title credentials convincingly.

Arshavin, who burst onto the international scene after sitting out a two-match ban impressed all and sundry with his effervescent skills. Whenever he ran with the ball, he was virtually untouchable, much to the chagrin of the highly acclaimed Oranje players.

Can Manchester United Retain Their Superiority?

Last Saturday, Manchester United pipped Chelsea to clinch their 17th Premier League title with a 2-0 victory at Wigan. Chelsea let themselves down in a 1-1 draw with Bolton, adding more cheer for the Red Devils as they are seen as legitimate winners, in the sense that goal difference was not the decisive factor.

Avram Grant accused them of winning due to benevolent referees and certain clubs who conspired to deliver the title to United’s doorstep. Well, from what I have seen, Wigan were professional in their approach and the comfortable scoreline belies the highly strung atmosphere in JJB Stadium - as late as the 80th minute, United fans were sitting on the edge of the seats as Wigan refuse to accept defeat.

Mourinho Keen To Kill Chelsea

Jose Mourinho, unemployed since leaving Stamford Bridge, barged into our consciousness on Friday when he remarked that he is keen to “kill” his old club if he meets them in next season’s Champions League.

Apparently, he was still on speaking terms with Roman Abramovich and Peter Kenyon, dispelling rumors of a fallout since he was given the boot by “mutual consent.” He said: “It was last week that I spoke with people from the club. I wish them always good, I wish them always to succeed, I wish them always to win.”

Carling Cup - A Promise of Greater Things to Come?

Is Jonathan Woodgate the answer to Tottenham’s leaky defense? There are some snickers which accompany this question but in the heady hour of triumph, Woodgate can do no wrong, after his precious extra-time winner stripped Chelsea of the Carling Cup trophy.

I will say it is luck as the usually reliable Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech messed up the clearance from Tottenhams’ free kick. He punched the ball to Woodgate which happened to rebound strongly off his head into the net. Woodgate said of his first goal in two years: “I don’t believe it. I don’t usually go up for corners but I just managed to get my head to it.”

Chelsea Aims for Quadruple After Huddersfield

I do not know if Jose Mourinho and Avram Grant ever see eye to eye on team issues but one thing is for sure, both are loathe to see Frank Lampard leave Chelsea. Indeed, the Blues will be keen to get this midfield dynamo to sign an extension to his contract.

Grant rubbished talks of Lampard being placed on the transfer list and he is confident a new deal will be tabled in the summer. “I want him in the club, and I think he will stay at Chelsea,” Grant said. “I don’t see any other idea.”
