Sports Thoughts from the Great White North

Jays fire Gibbons, Mediocrity to stay

Well it appears that John Gibbons has finally hit the end of his tenure with the Jays, and not surprisingly after they lost 13 of their last 17 in a June that was supposed to be the Month they made their move. But old habits are hard to break, and the Jays are habitually mediocre.

It's a syndrome that has plagued my Maple Leafs for awhile now, yet the Jays seem to be the best when it comes to being just plain....well plain.

The Story of Hockey's first Superstar

Wow, so the last blog I wrote here was roughly 3 months ago (I know, you missed me) so I believe it's high time we get back on that. I've been super busy with work, and seeing as that's coming to an end in a week or so, I should have more than enough time to blog it up.

Anyways, with the constant barrage of superstar marketing in today's sports, I got the idea to profile Hockey's first superstar; someone that may not be too familiar to today's generation - yet had a giant impact on today's game.

Boards Becoming Weapon of Choice for NHL'ers

Before I get into this wonderful blog here, I want to touch on a few things that have been happening around the sports world over the last week or so...

  • -Classy move by the Yanks this week, visiting a community and a school that was torn to bits last year by another act of brutal violence. It's easy to hate the Yankee's being a Jays and Sox fan, but this was one thing they should definitely be applauded for. Will their visit bring back lost loved ones or heal the pain caused by the events of April 17th, 2007? Most definitely not, but being able to mingle with stars like Jeter and A-Rod, play against them, and most importantly feel like a college kid again is cause enough for applause.
  • -Chris Pronger received his eighth suspension this week, after stomping on Ryan Kesler's calf with an exposed skate blade. The suspension length? 8 games - Now I'm not going to go off on a rant about this joke of a suspension the NHL has handed out, because I'd basically be echoing the same sentiments as talking heads around the sports world. What I will say though, is that Chris Simon should just keep his mouth shut about the whole situation. This guy should feel lucky he's even still in the league, but yet he feels that justice hasn't been served - Boo friggen' Hoo

My NHL Awards - Otherwise known as 'The Bentleys'

Well we're a month away from the end of the regular season, and although it may be a little early to be handing out my awards for years end, I'm going to do it anyways because it's my blog and you can't stop me.

Here's where it gets interesting though....Instead of shuffling through the laundry list of NHL awards and handing them out to certain players, I'm going to create my own awards and name them the ‘Bentleys' (I know, quite original) The voters consist of Me, Myself and I, and votes will be cast with no bias or pre-determined favorites (ex. A Goalie can actually win the MVP) If you have an issue with my awards, feel free to drop a comment below and I'll kindly point out the reasons as to why you are wrong.

Constant adversity a good thing for the Ottawa Senators

Being a Maple Leafs fan I am accustomed to seeing the never ending distractions and adversity plague my team for the last few years now, while being constantly envious of the chaps in Ottawa, reveling in success while seemingly avoiding all the pit-falls that come with consistent success (or lack of in the Leafs case).

Well it appears that for now, our friends up the 401 from us seem to be dealing with their fair share of adversity, as they are hitting some troubling snags on their quest for Lord Stanley.
