Regarding: Big Ten schools calling App State
For all of the disenfranchised teams, those who do not stand a chance in the coaches poll, AP poll, or BCS ranking because of the establishment, THE TIME IS NOW!
The reason that Big Ten Schools are calling App State for tips on how to defend (Michigan's new) spread offense is because the spread is the the giant killer. Not the wishbone or the power I - the spread. All you need is a decent O-line, a mobile quarterback, and a fast receiver and you can put points up.
I'm not suggesting that all underrated schools move to the spread - I am suggesting that there is more parity than ever before in the game of college football. I am suggesting that this year, we will witness more upsets than we did last year, and that this trend will continue.
What will it take to bring sport to the game? What will it take for the provincial powers-that-be to step off their high horses and accept that football, like basketball, baseball, soccer, and every other sport is a competition? When someone from Ga Southern claims that they beat App St so by default, they could beat UM - and so they are better than FL...(you know those people)...most of us find that line that line of reasoning ludicrous.
Yet, that is the BCS in a nutshell. That is what it does. Anyone in support of computer algorithms instead of true competition has something to protect.
So, I contend that like any true revolution, a change in 1A football has to come from within. The fans of teams who continually get the shaft, need to speak out. This post isn't to rehash the age-old argument of playoffs vs. bowls. That would be a ridiculous conversation - bowls are about money, playoffs are about sport. Until there are playoffs in 1A, there is no real national champion, only an opinion.
This post is about rallying a movement. When App St plays LSU close, or beats them, will this get anyone's attention? Or will the traditionalists call that a fluke, too? My point is that there are great schools out there - 1A and the occasional 1AA that given the opportunity, will give the big guys a run for their money. Level the playing field. Blog, post, send - challenge the establishment. Give your school a chance at winning it all.
