My Take on the Bears 2008 NFL Draft

With the 2008 NFL Draft now over, here's how I think the Bears did.

Pick 1 - Round 1 - 14th Overall - Chris Williams - OT - Vanderbilt

The Bears addressed a big need here. They needed to put some youth into their offensive line, and left tackle was a top priority. I love the fact that Williams saw plenty of elite pass rushers in the SEC during his college career. He has great size (6'6", 315 lbs.) and could come in and make an immediate impact up front for the Bears.

NFL Mock Draft 2008

Ten months ago, I first came to this site. Before I got hooked on throwdowns, I took the time to do my first mock draft. Now I didn't exactly get every pick right, but I hit the nail on the head a few times and I had a lot of fun doing it. So here's my take on the 2008 version. And even though trades are bound to happen, I'm just going to do the draft as the teams currently are now.

1. Miami Dolphins - Chris Long - DE

The Dolphins have wholes everywhere, no doubt. But the run defense was dead last in the league last season, and I think that's what they start with this offseason. I don't see them drafting Glenn Dorsey and plugging him in at noseguard after he played defensive tackle in a 4-3 in college, so they go with another vital part of a 3-4 defense and get Long. Long has the size, the motor, and the genes to be a dominant defensive end.

My Views on College Football vs. the NFL

When it comes to college football vs. the NFL, there is no comparison. Literally.

Personally for me, I can't compare the two. It's like apples and oranges. Night and day. Lindsay Lohan and no drug habits. Two very different things.

College football is like the troubled teenager you can't help but love. Sure he has some flaws (the BCS system) but he has so much passion you can overlook them.

The atmosphere is the biggest part of what seperates college football from the NFL. Stadiums are filled with sometimes over 100,000 screaming fans, which is just something you don't get in the NFL. Games like Rutgers vs. Louisville, Boise State vs. Oklahoma, and hundreds of other upsets, comebacks, and instant classsics make NCAA football so enjoyable to follow and watch.

Drew Brees Should Have Been Co-MVP Last Season.

Not to take anything away from LaDainian Tomlinson. That's not the point of this post. He had an amazing season, one of the best ever.

But as I look back on last season, I really believe Drew Brees should have been Co-MVP along with Tomlinson. Brees lead the NFL in passing yards and passing efficiency, throwing for 4,418 yards and 26 touchdowns on his way to a 96.2 passer rating.

Maybe even more important than his personal stats were his team accomplishments. Brees led the Saints to a 10-6 record and captured the NFC South and second seed in the NFC. The Saints also beat the Eagles to reach the NFC Championship game, where they were defeated by the Bears.

My Fantasy Draft Results

I recently did a ten team draft with some friends, and after about six great hours of football, here's what my team looks like. (Note: my team is set up a little different, but I wanted to have plenty of players and focus on depth. That way no team with a few elite prospects can run the table.)

Starters:

QB: Carson Palmer

QB: Rex Grossman

RB: Brian Westbrook

RB: Deuce McAllister

WR: Chad Johnson

WR: Reggie Wayne

WR: Terry Glenn

TE: Todd Heap
