Trying to sell USF's brighter future

(05-13) 21:14 PDT -- Exactly one month ago, Rex Walters was announced as the USF basketball coach. Not much has changed on some fronts. He still has a bare office, still hasn't found a permanent home and is still adjusting to the sticker shock of his new surroundings. So what has sexy Rexy - a college nickname - done if he's not decorating his office or moving his life from Florida to the Hilltop?

Apparently, just enough to bring some fans back to the Hilltop.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ??? The University of San Francisco lured former NBA player Rex Walters away from Florida Atlantic to take over its struggling basketball program.

Walters, who had a 31-33 record in two seasons for the Owls, was formally introduced at a news conference Monday afternoon.

"The University of San Francisco is a national name and we need to be a national basketball program," Walters said. "The challenge of that really excited me."

West Matchup: No. 1 Lakers vs. No. 8 Nuggets

How they match up:
The Lakers could not have asked for a better opponent. They owned the Nuggets in the regular season, sweeping three games by an average of 118.0-101.7. They didn't have Pau Gasol for any of the meetings and Andrew Bynum was a factor only in the first game. The only close game also was the only game the teams played in Denver. Allen Iverson went for 51 points—49 in the first three quarters—in that 111-107 Lakers win, and he led all scorers with a 32-point average in the series.
