PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Dwight White, part of the Steel Curtain defense that led the team to four Super Bowl championships in the 1970s, has died following surgery at a Pittsburgh hospital. He was 58.



The team announced White's death Friday.



Team president Art Rooney II is calling White "an important member of the Steelers family."



Chairman Dan Rooney praised White's "relentlessness" on the field and his caring nature off it. Rooney noted White scored the team's first ever Super Bowl points in Super Bowl IX with a safety against Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton.

The offensive line is an issue. BBen is almost always scrambling, Colon is getting his lunch fed to him on a weekly basis. The Steelers are still playing to their oppenants potential, they need to step up.

Sure, it is easy to blame an offensive line, but it is the team as a whole who need to improve, I think special teams is the biggest worry in the locker room now... We almost lost to the Browns, and DID lose to the Jets due to poor kickoff and punt coverage... Gave up a 90 and 100 yard kick return by Josh Cribbs, and a 33 yard punt return to set up the game winning field goal by Leon Washington... I think we can lay off on the offensive line accusations as of now...

If fast Willie can get it done on the ground, we have a very good chance of winning... As long as Big Ben gets the proper protection and the O-line opens up holes for Willie, we will thrive, and maybe blow them out... We haven't allowed a 100 yard rusher in some 20, 30 odd games, Alexander is no exception... Lamarr Woodley will lay the wood to Hasselbeck, and I think this Seattle O-line, with Hutchenson gone and only Walter Jones as the notable linemen, this line will be cut through like a hot knife through warm butter... It is going to be a sad, sad day for Seattle, no SuperBowl XL revenge here...

For the sake of discussion...I just had this conversation with another member of this group. I know 8-8 was quite a letdown after winning the Super Bowl, but I honestly feel the week 17 overtime victory against Cincinnati was one of the three or four best wins of Cowher's career. We had nothing to play for, everyone knew the future of the team was up in the air (Cowher and Porter were both clearly playing their last games for Pittsburgh). There were several reasons why they could have packed it in and let the Hated Bengals get the best of them. But they played their most physical game of the year (ASmith's hit on Housh, Farrior's hit on Palmer), made up for Parker's biggest mistake of the year, and still won the game for the sake of pride, and the sake of ushering Cowher out of Pittsburgh in style.

Maybe even just as much as the Super Bowl, I couldn't have been prouder to be a Steelers fan after that game.
