I think Wale named dropped all three on one song but yeah dude's a big sports fan. Speaking of Wale, Attention Deficit was pretty damn good.

Wale is a huge sports fan in what I've heard, too. One mixtape I heard him name drop Jeremy Shockey, Eric Mangini and Rey Mysterio.

I really noticed that when he name-dropped Lane Kiffin. That kind of caught me off guard. I know he used to have a blog on ESPN, too.

Agree Esco. No Ceilings was more hype than promise. The only thing I learned about Weezy is that he is one hell of a sports fan. Every freestyle had at least 1 sports referrence.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN

I downloaded No Ceilings, and I don't see what the big deal is. Swag Surfin was the only freestyle on there that was above average.

I got So Far Gone awhile ago. Became a bit of a Drake stan so I ended up downloading a bunch of his tracks, but Uptown is pretty good. The chopped and screwed version of that is excellent.
Yeah, Drake does curse a lot. I guess he is trying to prove a point.

I copped So Far Gone finally, and it was pretty good. I'm thinking I liked Uptown best, but Fear was really good.
Also, does it seem like Drake cusses a whole lot, even by rap standards?

Little Brother is boring? Damn. Oh boy the youth is spoiled. I actually got no problems with Weezy but if Gucci, Soulja Boy, and Weezy is the extent of your hip-hop knowledge then you are screwed!
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
10/29/09
My little brother had his friends over the other day, and they came up into my room to play with the PS3. I was bumping Little Brother, and they said it was "boring". One of them left their iPod in my room, and it was almost entirely Lil Wayne, Gucci and Soulja Boy. I just feel bad for the future of hip hop.

Jay and Alicia Keys supposed to be performing at the Yankee game tomorrow (was supposed to be tonight but the performance got canceled due to the weather, but the game is still on). I'm taking bets: will Lil Mama try to crash the stage at Yankee Stadium? Will she even be in the building?
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
10/28/09
I tried to get into Gucci. I figured if people are talking so much about him maybe I need to give him a fair chance. Found some mixtapes and downloaded them. Played them in the car and after all that I came up with the same conclusion: he's garbage. Someone here really needs to explain the appeal because I just don't get it. I'm not hating on the South. I got love for the South but why is this dude hot?
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
10/28/09
I feel you on that. The only Gucci song I've even almost lied was the Freaky Girl remix, and that was just because of Ludacris.
I decided not to listen to Wacka Flocka because... well, because his name is Wacka Flocka. Be real.

Him, OJ Da Juiceman (second worst rap name ever) and some **** called Wacka Flocka Flame (WHAT IS THAT?) are on the rap blogs a lot lately and I just don't get the appeal. Someone needs to explain it to me. Not hating but to me they are garbage. Especially Gucci.

Still listening to The Salvation. Lord knows I mentioned Sky in a few of these blogs but I got into some of his mixtapes (back when you can actually find bootleggers on Brooklyn streets...damn Bloomberg!!!) so of course I ran out to buy his album the day it came out. Had to wait for some lazy ass dude to go in the stockroom at Target and get me one but I still got it.

Blueprint 3 came out yesterday. I got it, and honestly I liked it. It's not in his top 5 best albums but compared with the crap he has released lately, its better than that. Didnt like that last track Young Forever though. Looked like he was trying to duplicate My Way or My Last Song and missed the part entirely. He has made many songs at the closing of an album as a sort of tribute to himself that doing it again on BP3 was pointless.

I'll give ya that Jay isn't the best battle rapper, but he can certainly bring the fire. There are about 3-4 songs on Blueprint 2 that come to mind.
As for AZ/Nas, Nas is more consistently in the spotlight, but both artists suffer from a lack of consistency in great song-making. That said, AZ and Nas are both extremely talented, but when it comes to flow/lyrics mixed, AZ's earlier stuff could touch Nas at any point in his career. Now, AZ only spits dope on about 1 in 4 tracks.

The only time I heard Jay really respond to Jaz O was on an interview with Angie Martinez on Hot 97 some years ago when Jaz claimed he produced some tracks on Reasonable Doubt and wasn't paid for it.
Jay didn't even dis Jaz in person on a track. He got Freeway and Memphis Bleek to do his dirty work. Well Bleek had a beef anyway because Jaz made public the robbing of his Roc-A-Fella chain in Brooklyn. Actually the robbing of two of his chains. Not too far from Marcy Projects actually.

Jay said some stuff about Jaz on that Luda joint "Do It For Hip-Hop". I actually like Jaz-O. Ova, Return Of The King, and Friends Betrayed are some nice diss tracks. He really can rhyme but because of his age he does come off as dated and corny to a lot of listeners.
As far as Jay responding? Nah, Jigga isn't going to waste doing a whole track on Jaz. You are going to see more of the same from him which is a lot of slick one-liners in songs.

Def Jam is too much of an R&B label. Chrisette Michele, Rihanna and all the seem to be getting all the good looks.
Escobar Caesar
05/12/09
Juelz has that same problem with Def Jam by the way. I want to blame L.A. Reid but even when Jay was President of the label he really didn't do anything to put artist out there.
I forgot to tack Rick Ross onto Def Jam artists that get promo but Ross had to start a beef with 50 to even get that.

Lloyd Banks is too tied up with 50 but I pray he doesn't go to Def Jam. Def Jam stalls artists and when their albums come out they get no promotion. Look at Jada. That album was good (by his standards) and he got no promo. The same is going to happen to Fab and anyone else on that label not named Jay-Z or Kanye West.
Def Jam just doesn't know how to promote their artists anymore. It's been that way since Russell Simmons walked away from the label.

I am hoping for another Eminem album because I really keep trying to get myself up for Relapse but I am not feeling these songs.
Also, if there is a second album he needs to drop this annoying voice he's developing. That voice turns me off before he even completes the first 16.

Eminem's second album that's to come out this year is supposed to be off it. DJ Premier beats, a song with Jay-Z, one with Nas, another with Luda, some dedications to Proof and some barbs towards Ricky Ross. Of course, knowing Aftermath, it won't happen.

Banks is too tied up with 50, but I'm hearing he might get a release from Interscope and head over to Def Jam. Hopefully, he'll get that look... also heard he's working on a track with Fabolous, Jadakiss and Juelz Santana. If that ever materializes, it'll be straight bananas.
Escobar Caesar
05/11/09
Lloyd Banks is nice. He goes off on his mixtapes. If he could just bring that same kind of fire to an album, it would be a different story for him.
Fabolous is somewhat similar. He's had more success than Banks because of his more "pop" offerings but he's also a beast on the mixtapes.

I'm trying to decide who's my favorite rapper who goes on other people's beats. It used to be Wayne, but he's entirely too over-saturated. I'm feeling Fabolous, he's done some work on Brooklyn Go Hard, Nas Is Like, Poppin Them Thangs, Let the Beat Build, and Barry Bonds.
Lloyd Banks is nice too.

I was feeling Get It In Ohio, but I'm hearing it won't be on the album. No me gusta.

I kind of liked Puffy's take-that adlib.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
05/07/09
It's annoying, but better than "take that, take that" in all the 90s-00s Bad Boy songs. Or the ad-libs DJ Clue, Trapaholics, DJ Drama, Funkmaster Flex, and everybody feel necessary to do.

05/06/09
True but I can't stand that Cannon drop of his.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
05/06/09
Don Cannon might be my new favorite producer. Homeboy's body of work is undeniable. You got Go Crazy, Mr. 17.5 and Circulate with Jeezy; The Ary of Storytellin' Pt. 4 with 'Kast; Everybody Hates Chris and Undisputed with Luda... he's got some straight fire beats going on. His sample are on point, on top of almost any other prooducer in the game right now.

Lupe Fiasco and Justin Timberlake are set to make a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro (the world's largest freestanding mountain) with Ethiopian musician Kenna this fall.
The climb is to raise awareness of the global water crisis. Justin said recently: "I've been training four times a week to get my VO2 - oxygen consumption - levels up to expand my lungs. We'll climb for a week straight, carrying 30 lbs on our backs. It's going to be intense, but it's going to be so rewarding.
"We're going to be ready for it." said Kenna. "My dad almost died as a child from waterborne diseases in Ethiopia, and he had talked to me about digging a well there, and I thought, 'I have too many friends who would be concerned with the subject of clean water. Maybe I can help out.' "

Then maybe hit up the midwest...see who we can hunt down over there...

As far as 50 and Ricky, both of them sound like they just trying to rehab their careers but Ricky shouldn't have done this. 50 is desperate to be back on top and a desperate 50 is a dangerous 50.

So... Rick Ross and 50 Cent are beefing now. IDK if any of you have heard "Mafia Music", Ricky's new song, but he disses Curtis in it. And I don't really like Rick, but I can mss with this track.
Curtis being Curtis, responded with "Officer Ricky". It sounds like he got his jaw wired shut a la Kanye West about... 5 years ago??? Damn, I'm old... oh, and 50 FINALLY responds to Wayne on the same track. At the end. 2 months later. After we all forgot about it.
Also, Rhymefest is starting something with Charles Hamilton, who apparently is from Cleveland. Huh. Never knew that. Now what does that tell you about this cat's rep in OH? This reggin really wants to be from Uptown.
Sigh... hip hop, what happened?

The only problem is like the real 50 Cent is that if you bang that hard you don't live that long. A lot of them dudes had to build their names young because they didn't see the other side of 30.
I always respected the street legends too. You have to because some of their stories sound like Hollywood scripts but it's all real. I'm an 80's baby so I'm a little too young to really remember the 80's grime of Brooklyn but when I hear them stories I flash back to the abandoned buildings and all that crazyness that used to be NYC.

As should be the whole nature of hip hop. At it purest its who reps the hardest in the most of clever ways. Hell even Andre gets at rappers claiming to be the best. But Ive always been intrigued with NY and the gangsters there. Like the real 50 cent and the original dope boys. NY is just an interesting place. If you can make it there you are a bad motherfukker

Well said Agrippa. New York will never have the unity that other cities have in hip-hop. It isn't in our nature. We were born to fight and be distrustful of one another. It's just weird to tell you the truth but that's just NYC for you.

Listen to Verbal Intercourse off of Raekwon's Cuban Linx album. Raekwon, Nas, and Ghostface are all taking shots at Biggie. It's subliminal but Nas' dart at him on this song and the Message is the reason why Big comes back with "your reign on the top is short like leprachauns" on Kick In The Door.

My deal with Weezy is that he can deliver some slick lines, but then he mumbles some hot garbage. I don't want that kind of rapper.
Also, he does need to leave that Lean alone. It's affecting his rhyme pattern, and his thoughts. You can hear that he's messed up. He is literally slurring words now. If he cleans himself up, and works on his delivery, he might be as good as he thinks he is.

Although I liked The Reading, Asher can sound a little young when he tries to do substance. My beef with him is that he is stuck in this frat boy mode. Frat boy and College doesn't last forever. I got these three A Tribe Called Quest CDs recently and I listened through all of them tonight and found that some tracks are edited, some aren't, and one was both (on the same track!).
None of 'em have the parental advisory sticker and I did some research and found that I could not locate a picture of any of the album covers with the "parental advisory" patch on them.
Any of ya'll know why Quest did it like that?
I thought I'd accidentally bought edited stuff...

Good point Agrippa. I am tired of going to XXL Mag and SOHH and reading all the gay bashing of Lupe Fiasco. Just because the guy is clearly intelligent and not "dumbing it down" he must be a nerd or gay.
Weezy has hot lines but his songs for the most part are garbage but these dudes love it. It's trash but these internet gangstas are all over his nuts for it.
I just think hip-hop needs a more accepting fan base and one rapper with skills that can cross over to all fanbases.
PS: If I read one more Weezy is better then Jigga argument I'm going to bitchslap someone through my computer. That makes me SICK.

It is that then there is the whole loving to be hood factor. Its like you are a nerd or gay in the hood if you like music with substance. So mainstream keeps feeding back into itself in its own vivacious circle. Look at Lil Wayne. Dude is not that intelligent and in the hood he can do no wrong. Hip hop is not heard by the masses unless it lacks substance unless you are the exception which is few far in between

It's part lack of Hip-Hop education among listeners and the fact that radio wants to play the same 5 songs all day long. Unfortunately out of those 5 songs, 4 of them are true trash.
I blame the radio, I blame Soulja Boy, and honestly I blame New York for not finding an MC with national appeal to keep rap going. Not hip-hop but rap. Lyrics, content, and all the things that people associate with the East Coast and New York has been missing lately and as much as I respect Jigga, we need a successor to him and in a hurry.

That's not necessarily true, Agrippa. Many people DON'T listen to the radio (no matter what genre they like/prefer) because the station plays the same songs all day and a lot of the time they are the not so great to sh*tty stuff. Many stations have lowered the number of songs in rotation by a large amount over the years. Why? I don't know.
Big Ben68
09/29/08
The thing about radio is its more geared towards people who don't care about music unless there in there car, club or 12-13 years old. So they play the club sheat or what the kids are listening too. More picky consumers like us dont have as many outlets like popular city radio stations. We never will. A station that played Common or Roots 5 times a day would be playing Spanish music within a week here in Texas. Radio will be garbage till we start to really educate and breed a generation that doesn't like to superman hoes

Since the Black Album (which is one of my favorite albums) his flow just sounds weak. Even on his featured tracks, such as Mr. Carter, Put On remix and Black Republican, he doesn't sound like his heart is in it anymore. Kingdom Come was garbage IMO, almost at a Nastradamus level. American Gangster was better, but not by that much.

You laughed? I remember that like yesterday. Funk Flex and Angie Martinez played that whole battle out on Hot 97. It felt like all of New York was calling in that day to say who won. Out of every 10 callers, 9 said NaS. Shoot I was saying NaS and I ride with Jay. NaS killed him. Supa Ugly couldn't have been more embarrasing.
Shoot NaS is still killing him. He got the better of him on Black Republican and Success.

Supa Ugly was just sad. No one could have came back from Ether but I at least expected Jay to do a lot better than Supa Ugly. That's why I think in a battle, Game could beat him because Game really does go hard. 120 Bars and 240 Bars were pretty good battle tracks on his part.

The Game can go hard. Jigga isn't really a battle rapper though so I can see Game really getting him in. Jay says slick lines but he has problems on a whole track.

Khaled is... annoying, to say the least. I admit I like those songs with a lot of rappers each coming on and dropping a verse, but he could diversify a little bit. Wayne, Ross, Fat Joe, Birdman and Jeezy get old quick. Mix it up with something new. That's why I'm So Hood Remix was so hot IMO, because of Luda, Busta and Big Boi.

Oh and Lil Wayne is NOT deserving of a top 3 in anybody's rankings...
...his albums are usually not that great...
I haven't had a chance to listen to every song on Tha Carter III, but I'll get around to it and then I'll let you know about that one.
Eazy-E was great, but he is not the greatest of all time when it comes to hip hop/rap artists. Personally, I HAVE to give that to Tupac...
Lupe Fiasco is a fantastic lyricist who gives his songs more than just snappy beats. He is making an effort to bring hip hop back to its more lyrical roots instead of the snap music lovefest that goes on today.
Never in my life have I forgotten Dr. Dre (who you give credit to then turn around and insult him). Once I found his music I've loved it since...

Kanye, Lupe, and Pharrell joined together to create the group Child Rebel Soldiers. They have only done two songs together, Us Placers (off a Kanye mixtape) and Everybody Nose the Remix (on the recent N.E.R.D. album). Later on this year the three of them are releasing an album together. Judging by those two tracks and their collective genius, that album is going to be crazy. The name of the group is Child Rebel Soldiers. Look it up.

Esco said it best. Let's bring it back to where we started.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
04/09/08
I think at this point we've gone completely away from what we started doing with this group. Now, all we do is the video blogs. When we started we had the hip hop spotlights (Talib Kweli, Jay-Z and Ray Cash were featured I think), a couple Ultimate Playlists, tributes to Biggie and Pimp C, etc. I do like the Videos, I just think that that shouldn't be the focal point of the group.
Escobar Caesar
04/08/08
If that message wasn't clear my vote is to end the video blogs. Just not my thing, sorry guys.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
04/08/08
I say yeah. I like the video blogs but they aren't my style. We need to go back to content and education. Back to the words...for lyrics and the word is hip-hop.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN

Meh, it's alright.
Dan, Lupe is raw, but Talib's been at it since '96, still to today hitting with those lyrics that even rappers respect. I may be tripping, but didn't Jay-Z say something to the effect of "Lyrically, I'd be Talib Kweli"?

It's OK to like rock, Esco. I too like Nickelback. This Is How You Remind Me, and that new song Rock Star are pretty good.

11/28/07
Nickelback! *gasps in horror*
I think we need to stage an intervention stat for Esco!

I am embaressed. I heard a Nickelback song and liked it. I find comfort in the fact that Paul Wall, Lupe Fiasco and Twista are in the video.
Escobar Caesar
11/28/07
You guys heard I Get Money remix? It's kind of old, but Ludacris raped the track.
Escobar Caesar
11/28/07
Yeah, Esco keep doing it. Sorry, I haven't been keeping it up on my end. Been busy with actual work lately. My work schedule is really kicking my behind.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/27/07
I'm going to have to start talking to some people as this isn't working.

11/27/07
Your doing a great job Esco, and the group is picking up.
Tracy00214-Is back!
11/27/07
The low level of activity in this group is depressing. I'm blogging out of my ****, BigBen, tracy and Hov are off fighting the Mods, and yet it still seems as if we are at a stand still here.

Big Ben68
11/20/07
I picked The Booth. If no one disagrees before tomorrow, I am changing it before I go to NC.
Escobar Caesar
11/20/07
What should we change the name "Locker Talk" to?
Escobar Caesar
11/20/07
Excellent, Hova
Escobar Caesar
11/20/07
Next week. Mine are up, the way I like it too. I took Tracy's suggestion and found a Jay-Z song with little cursing and cleaned it up.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/20/07
When can I change the bars?
G.O.A.T. is back?
11/20/07
Maybe you could edit it like some radio stations do,Hova.
Tracy00214-Is back!
11/20/07
I really am so p'd off about putting Kurtis Blow up there. I like the song and it's sports related but man...I wanted to put Jigga.

Escobar Caesar
11/20/07
No one made me a supermember to change the Bars.
G.O.A.T. is back?
11/20/07
This sucks so bad about the censoring. I really wanted to put some Jigga up there. Man....haters had to shut things down for people.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/19/07
Went old school Kurtis Blow and his joint Basketball. It's clean. If I come up with something better I'm going to change it.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/19/07
Hova, just go ahead and do it. I think G.O.A.T. forgot and I am sick of seeing that warning.

J. HOVA: BROOKLYN

Crap. Who's turn is it now? Make sure they are clean.
Escobar Caesar
11/19/07
No more bad lyrics. Fannation is going to boot us. If we are going to post bars we are going to have to make them clean.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/19/07
What a coincidence! We were in dire need of a critic..;)

J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/17/07
Esco: I had the same thought. We need someone else to step up, blog or something.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/17/07
When is it my turn for Bars of the Day?
G.O.A.T. is back?
11/16/07
Big Ben, too
Escobar Caesar
11/16/07
Maybe this why we have so little members. Me, Hova and efbasketball seem to be the only ones doing anything.
Escobar Caesar
11/16/07
We can use some more members, that's for sure? 23 is kinda low.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN

J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/14/07
We should have a universal pic.
EFB **** THE MODS!!
11/14/07
I was thinking... We should do a hip hop spotlight, like each week pick a different artist and write a blog on him/her.
Escobar Caesar
11/14/07
Shouldn't we change the picture? Maybe we need one universal image, no matter what bars we use.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/14/07
I think someone did bounce. Damn.
J. HOVA: BROOKLYN
11/14/07
Did someone drop? I thought we had 24 yesterday.
