Horrible performance last night. The Blues were entirely outworked on their home ice by Nashville. Mason stood on his head to keep them in the game, but they just can't generate offense. No excuse for being outworked at home. Murray needs to kick some butt after that game.

I agree with you on the up and down thing.....the Blues need to find some consistency night to night. I believe it is part of the youth program and they are just going through the growing pains of learning to win consistently.
All of the young guys are off to pretty slow starts offensively....Berglund, Oshie, Backes, etc. I think once they pick it up a little, the Blues are going to be fine and make a nice push for a good playoff seed.

Up and Down...Up and Down
That seems to be the theme with the squad thus far. One game we're winning 5-0, next game we lose 4-1.
I can't say that I'm completely dissatisfied with the Blues this year though. Those two wins against Detroit to start the season are going to be huge later on. Our goaltending has also been pretty solid thus far (I really think that the presence of Conklin is going to do wonders for Mason down the stretch).
The loss of Steen and Oshie (for a bit at least) is going to sting the offense. I still think that we need a primetime scorer. Someone you can rely on to get the puck in the back of the net on a consistent basis. You can't bank on Ol' Walt leading you to a Cup with a team high 25 goals.

He's been pretty good so far......I haven't seen all their games, but he has been very active. The Blues got jobbed by the refs in the second period tonight, and Ott of Dallas was getting in everyone's face and he took a run at one of our d-men, and Keith went after him hard.
I've always thought Tkachuk was underrated and I think he's been a great Blue. Only strike against him was a couple of years ago when he came to camp totally out of shape and they suspended him.

Hey Rings, how is Keith playing have not seen a game yet this yr, I know he has some goals and points, but that could be misleading , I am in a huge debate here in Boston with a B's fan I say I would rather have Keith than Recchi and he says I am crazy, Am I the only person that realizes how good Keith is, never mind his scoring but his leadership, and physical play am I wrong here. is Keith still the leader he used to be

I like resigning Keith Tkachuck. He's just the type of gritty veteran this team needs to keep things together down the stretch.
What I DON'T like is Chicago's offseason thus far. They've pick up a couple of big names (one being Marrian Hossa) that could make it tough on the Blues come next season.
Here's hoping the young guys continue to develop and whoever we decide to stick in between the pipes can put it together for an entire year.

It's true. I remember Doug Weight saying the same thing when we got him. He said it was summer and he was amazed at how much Blues talk there was.
The Blues always had a very loyal core following, but the Hull took it mainstream, and it's really stayed that way since. The cancelled year obviously affected things, but it's back now. I'm pumped about this team for next year.

That's all I can manage after the run the Blues had in order to secure a playoff spot for the first time in forever. It doesn't matter if we flame out in the first round against a Detroit or a San Jose. Just getting there will give this young squad the boost and the desire for the years to come.
I heard a report tonight that Kariya was trying to get cleared to participate in our last regular season game against Colorado. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this move. While I'd love to have a healthy Kariya blazing up and down the ice, I don't know how it's going to affect the chemistry this team has put together in the last month or so. Besides, is Kariya really 100% or does he just taste playoff ice?
In any case, it's good to see the Blues back in a place of respectability. They definitely have my support. And evidentily they have the support of about 2 million other St. Louisans who have suddenly developed "hockey fever". While it's nice to know they'll play in front of a sell out crowd, I can't help to hold a little bit of bitterness against all of those "bandwagoners"...

Evidentily, Anahiem's asking price for Pronger is some sort of deal involving DAVID PERRON. I don't know. I just don't know. I'd hate for us to trade him years before he reaches his full potential and have to watch him light it up in a Ducks jersey.

Mason,Mason, the kid is playing really good, as for Keith he didn't indicate to me that he is tanking it, but I know he wants to have a cup run, and this he told me before season he pretty much knew he was in a win win because loves playing in Stloo, and knew the Blues were gonna sign him because he knew he would be veteran leadership with young team plus when the time came they would get something in return for him that would be an asset to Blues. but the one thing he told me before season started is he will make it difficult if the Blues don't trade him to a team that has a legit shot at a deep run, and not a team like last time with Atlanta, he wants to go to a elite team, but I haven't spoken to him just text and not even about hockey its about Cardinals remember he has a home in AZ, and played their for years.

Brutal loss last night, and just another example of how we just don't know how to win games yet.
First Ottawa goal was a horrid shorthanded goal, after the Blues had 3 or 4 chances to clear the puck.
Second goal was with 2 minutes left in a 1-1 game. The Blues D let Peter Regin skate all the way from his own end, all the way behind the Blues net and back in front untouched to score the game winner. No way they can allow that kind of goal when they are two minutes from a point.
The last goal was an empty netter.
3-1 loss. Chris Mason was great and deserved better.

They played great last night.....totally dominated the 'Hawks. And Mason was good.
I agree, they keep this up and they could sneak back in. 5-2-1 in our last eight, and you're right, that's two great road wins this week against two very good teams.

Another big win last night it seems like the note is starting to button up defensively, you never know maybe we can sneak in the playoffs, 2 wins over 2 really good teams in a row, but the thing I like about it is we are playing better in our zone, I mean take away the 3 quickies by the B's and thats only 1 goal last 2 games against 2 good teams.
azcardsfan
01/22/09
Oh sorry about that, nah the 2man advantage was justified, Ryder was coming from behind the net and got cross checked of the puck a no brainer, if your annoucers were not so biased they should really understand that anytime any player just uses their stick for anything but going after puck its 2 min, and the refs are very consistant with that from every game I see. and you know what our TV guys are great because every time the B's get a penalty and I say bullcrap to myself, Andy Brickley points out exactly why its a penaltie its awesome the guy is great analyst, he was right on top of that call and said his exact words, I can see the Blues fans be upset about that call, but then went on to explain why it was a penaty, and he does the same to us B's fans.

BIG win for the Blues on the road at Boston in a Shootout......5-4.
The Blues were up 2-1 in the 3rd... then fell behind 4-2 before tying it late to go to OT. The Blues announcers were saying that the Blues got screwed on a couple of calls to set up Bruin PPs and let them take the lead. AZ.....shed some light on that......you were there....

Yea they are gonna ask for a lot I don't think the B's are gonna give say Rask & Stuart because both those guys are definate NHL ready and can contribute its more likely 1 and a unpolished youngster or it might be Axelson with 1 of the NHL ready studs. but they are not gonna give you guys 2 studs so if Davivson is smart do not hold us hostage because we will go elsewhere and you will lose out on a good young defenseman.

Rask is a stud Toivo was scap heap, but the defenseman is what you guys want to get isn't it funny how things change, you gave us a defenseman for a forward, now 2yrs later we are gonna give you a defenseman for a forward. anyway if we give you what I think it is thats to much on our part go look at the outlook for Rask plus either Stuart or Hunwick who are both on big league roster contributing right now to much and i love Keith and Chantel and the kids but you guys got to be realistic it would have been done already but you guys are asking to much.

Just like the wideman trade they knew they were giving up a good young scorer, but needed a puck moving defenseman. now we need a PP guy and some more grit for playoff run.
azcardsfan
01/09/09
Now the B's are desperate it was just announced Sturm is out for year. he was our left winger on PP. we have been using Axelson who is not a scorer because we needed a left hander hum.... this thing is gonna happen sooner than later. you are gonna steal a lot from us as we are going for broke with Keith.

I think the Blues know their future is 2010 or 2011, so I think they'll try to get younger. That means to me that any of the veterans are possible trade bait......Brewer, McKee, Tkachuk....even Legace if they could find a taker.

NOT THAT YOU CARE. but your the only puckhead I know. by the way does Scott Mellanby ring a bell to you.he is a scout for the Blues he was at the bruins farm team in Providence scouting Tukka Rask big time young goalie (please don't trade him Boston) its going down soon. we are getting killed with injuries.

They are gonna be fine the work their arse off and hit like animals, plus the trade is going down soon, as Ference will be back soon and you are gonna get a solid young defenseman, and something else what I don't know I hope its not our young goalie Rask, it originally was Hunwick but the B's are not parting with him it probably is Mark Stuart and another young defenseman in minors as we will only have Keith for half a year hopefully a cup run.

Mason is pretty inconsistent in goal....looks great sometimes and lousy others. If we continue to be out of the playoff picture as Jan and Feb progress, I wouldn't mind seeing Bishop brought back and given some starts in goal.

I agree. Even though the Blues are going to come up short, most likely, of the POs this year.......I love what JD has done with the team and I love the work ethic. I watched a little of Blues game last night on NHL network again they lost but man do they really work hard, if these young guys keep up that work ethic they will be so good, I keep telling you they remind me of us last yr. Geez if only you hero Whiz could get out of his players what the Blues coach gets out of his. maybe we would have won 11 games. i am sorry I vent on you about whiz but you seem like a reasonable guy and shield just don't see it. the coaching staff sucks on this Cards team.

12/23/08
I didn't see the game live but watched the replay last night, I was impressed how hard the Blues work, but do not get mad at me but the B's played terrible and still won by 3 goals, also the Blues were the hardest team I've seen that gave the B's trouble getting the puck out of their end, which is the B's strong point as their defense has been so great moving the puck but you guys really took it to us, but we still won easy thats how talented this group is here in Boston its only a matter of time before people start noticeing.

Honestly Rings and I really mean it no. I wouldn't trade Wideman for most players in NHL right now, I promise you he will start getting his due around league as this team starts getting noticed listen he is miles better than Chara right now, but when they talk about B's defenseman its always Chara, just look at the plus minus, Wideman played a team high 30 mins Sat night against Det, thats half the game. I'll trade you Chara for Boyes

Disappointing home loss to Edmonton yesterday, especially after being up 2-0. Legace was in goal for the second straight game after Mason's stellar game against Nashville on Tuesday. I know Manny is the #1, but it seems like you'd go with the hot hand the last couple of games, and Mason has been better than Manny lately. Play the hot hand, Andy.

az....I know he's good. I think it will turn out to be a good trade both ways in the long run. When Wideman was in STL, his shot was very impressive. He came in right as MacInnis retired, so I saw him as the heir apparent to QB the powerplay when Al retired.
TenRingsSTL

Rings I promise you I will not bring it up anymore, but If you watch Wideman every game I swear to god you would want to take that trade back, he is so god dam good an so kool with the puck in his own end and know what else he has a nasty shot. I know boyes iis a sniper but Wideman is just playing with so much confidence he is their leader back there not Chara

11/29/08
Yeah, I think the Blues real step up will probably be next year. We'd probably be scoring more goals if we didn't have Kariya, McDonald, Berglund all out......but lately the goaltending has been great and the penalty kill has been stellar..... JD has built this team the right way, and it's going to pay dividends over the next 2-3 years.

It's great to get a point last night against Montrea, but it could have been two. I didn't like the way we got outworked in the 3rd period. Montreal was the team that played Saturday night and then traveled......they should have been the tired team.
I do think losing Andy McDonald disrupted the team a bit. The line combos changed, and the Note seemed to struggle.
Now McDonald is out indefinitely, which is a much bigger loss than not getting the extra point. Kariya, Oshie, McDonald out......it's rough going right now.

I agree MeanGreen. I'm excited about the Kids. I thought Berglund looked pretty tentative his first 5 or 6 games, but he has come on. Oshie I am impressed with and Pietrangelo I think looks great for an 18 year old. He and Johnson the next few years are going to be a great blueline combo.

Alex Pietrangelo making it happen on that blue line, he still got a little work, but he did far better than i thought he was going to do. And i think Ben Bishop should have started hope he does tonight.
Other the other player i would like to call out is Roman Polak he has been with the river men and come up a few times, and i never thought he was any good and when i saw that he was on the roster this year i was disappointed. Did we get Oates from you guys, the bruins were the masters of stealing people back in the day, we got Cam Neely for Barry Pederson, we traded Ron Graham to the LA kings and got their #1pick and turned it into Ray Bourque and got Brad Mcrimmon with our own pick then traded him to Philly for Pete Peeters in his prime. we got this awesome defenseman named Dennis wideman for this guy Brad Boyes from Stloo. whats up rings check out our pool I totaled all the points up from every week and ranked them

It's all right, az.....we'll still take Boyes, thanks.
Besides, didn't we give you enough when we handed over Adam Oates?

Nice to see the Blues rebound last night after the debacle on Friday night. Great to see Bishop play so well in goal in his first start......but we have to stop getting goalies injured. That's 3 that are out in just eight games.

Yeah, I liked Wideman in STL....he can really shoot the puck. Glad to see him doing well in Boston. I guess that's one of those that worked out well for both teams, because Boyes has been a stud for the Blues

10/23/08
You know something I would still make that trade today with Wideman for Boyes Wideman is an excellent defenseman and is our puck carrying defenseman, he also can put the puck in the net, 13 goals last yr. we reuped him this year for good money

Tough loss tonight to Detroit. Blues didn't play badly for two periods but got out-skated. They again showed resiliency, coming back from 3-0 down to make it 3-2. Horrible break when David Backes broke his stick in the Blues zone, leading to the fourth, and ultimately winning goal to make it 4-2.
Still, the boys fought back to 4-3, and then Oshie just missed tying it in the last minute. Tough loss, but good effort against the Champs.

Well, redbird, what you've missed seeing is the Blues playing pretty well. Though it's only 5 games, the special teams have been great, and there seems to be a greater energy than last year. I'm very optimistic at this point.

UGH! The only thing about AFN out here in Iraq is that I can't watch the Blues :(( But I know with you guys, Ten and 51 giving commentary, which I thoroughly enjoy, it helps out alot. I hope to catch a game or three when I'm on leave (preferably the Blues of course!)
Again, I hope you guys agree. I am not and will not give up hope for the Blues. Even if they are mathmatically elimated during the final stretch of the regular season, they are still our boys and I see STL hoisting the Cup.

Other Blues injuries:
Lee Stempniak is expected to play Wednesday against the Wings.....Patrik Berglund is day to day after missing Saturday's game against Chicago, and DJ King may need shoulder surgery, which could keep him out for up to 3 months.

Great comeback from 3-1 down in the 3rd to beat Chicago! This team is showing much more resiliency than last year.....when they rarely came from behind.

AWESOME performance tonight! Complete effort from everyone...this team seems to have a lot of energy right now. Got a couple more PP goals, and Legace was great tonight.
Turco wasn't sharp, so the Blues caught a break there, but they badly outworked Dallas tonight. It was a fun, fun game to watch.

You're right, 51. Great game in the opener. Lots of energy....and yeah.....what's up with our PP actually working?? It looked better and more in sync that at any time last year.
I didn't see tonight's loss, but it's good to see the vets Tkachuk and Boyes getting goals early for us.

Okay, it's opening day for the Note, and I'm going to go on record right now. I've read a lot of negatives about how bad the Blues are gonna be, and how'll they be in the bottom 3 in the West.
I just don't see it. I think we'll be a surprise team and at least contend for a playoff berth. The young talent has to come through, and it will definitely hurt to not have Johnson, but I just have the feeling the Blues won't be as bad as everyone thinks they will be.

Chris Mason played the entire game in goal, allowing 3 goals on 24 shots.

The Blues had an offensive explosion on Friday night, beating Atlanta 9-4. David Perron scored 3 goals, and Andy MacDonald contributed 5 assists. Legace gave up 3 goals on 15 shots.
They followed that up on Saturday with a 4-3 loss in Dallas, as Perron added another goal. The Blues scored 2 power play goals in each game, a good sign after having the league's worst PP last year.

I'd hate to see something like this happen to such a gifted player. Erik is on my fantasy hockey team, which I'm thrilled about, but also devastated that he's down.
Alex Pietrangelo continues to impress me. I think he just may secure himself a roster spot and in turn, fill that void left my Erik's injury.
I don't think the franchise is cursed. Just a case of bad luck. But I am still holding my head high for him.

In possibly the worst news the Blues could get.....star defenseman Erik Johnson is out with a knee injury. John Davidson announced today that Johnson has a torn ACL and also a tear in his MCL.
This is obviously a huge blow to the Blues to lose Johnson for an extended period of time.
Incredibly, reports are that the injury is the result of a freak accident that happened in a golf cart, as Johnson apparently got his leg stuck under the accelerator, which led to the injury.
Incredible that this has happened. To hear of a critical injury like this happening in a golf cart?? Un-freaking-believable. Maybe this franchise really is cursed......

The Blues won their second pre-season game tonight, beating Dallas 3-2. Manny Legace played the first half of the game, allowing 1 goal on 8 shots.
Andy MacDonald, Brad Boyes and Lee Stempniak each had a goal and assist. 2008 Top pick Alex Pietrangelo had a couple of assists, which is a good sign, his chances of making the team out of camp went way up with the news today of Erik Johnson's injury.
The Blues next play Friday at home against Atlanta.

Erik Johnson will miss the first 3 days of training camp with a "non-hockey related knee problem". Not sure what that means, but it is not a good way to start camp. He will be re-evaluated this weekend and a determination on his status will be made prior to Tuesday's pre-season opener.

Hey Ten and to all.
TenRingsSTL has invited me to the Blues Fan page for a few reasons, ones that he knows why, but I would like to tell you those reasons:
1. I'll be relocating from virginia to missouri within the next 8 months, looking to be in missouri by the All-Star Break next July.
2. While I am ashamed to say I was a Ducks fan for many years, I am ashamed at their style of play the last few years, including their Cup win. I am no longer affilated with the Ducks in anyway.
Since I'm moving to Missouri, there are several teams that I have been following, the Cardinals in particular, for quite some time. I have always respected the ST Louis Blues and their style of play. Rest assured, I will bleed Blue.
Please forgive my ignorance as I learn the players and the coaching staff as I am coming from a division rival.
I look forward to many a discussions about the team as I becomed a seasoned Blues fan.

Yeah the loss to Phoenix was tough and then giving up 3 in the 3rd to Dallas was rough. I agree that they are going in the right direction, and I like moving Backman for picks. I think they could still pull out the playoffs, but they've got to win these upcoming homegames starting tonight.
