Baseball draft goes until 50 rounds these days, but they have sandwich picks because of some weird compensatory free-agent signing process.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's somewhere between where we've aimed there Cooz.

I had several open tryouts like that, Hemo, and ended up helping conduct one with the Braves. They aren't done to sign players, they're done to scout the talent in the area to set up the draft. It gives scouts the chance to watch hundreds of players in one setting as opposed to driving all over to watch just one or two players in several hundred games. With all due respect to your friend, the key word is "open," and if he has that level of potential, then the Nationals will draft him after his senior year of high school.

Players get recognized from those, but it's extremely rare (one out of a million) that a scout finds a player who's not required to be drafted at one of those tryouts, and is talented enough to sign on the spot.

The amateur baseball draft goes 68+ rounds, it'd be an incredible waste of money if 90 percent of the league right now went undrafted when over 2,000 players are chosen each year.

International players do not have to be drafted, however.

90 percent of the players are not scout signed - just the ones from other countries. That's not even half the league this year.
