August 23- Today In the World of Sports

The QB will be...-

...a secret!

According to Charlie Weis, the successor to Brady Quinn has already been picked, but he'll be damned if he's going to tell anybody who is suiting up before September 1. Quoth Charlie, when asked if he has picked a starter:

"Oh, absolutely," Weis said. "This is no big secret in my mind."

"People think that you vacillate; you never vacillate," Weis continued.

"You know what you're doing. I'm not trying to sandbag anyone, but I think that going into your first game, it's important that any additional ammo that you could have to help you win that one game you should use."

30 freaking runs-

On a day when Orioles interim manager Dave Trembley -- who has had a long, tumultuous road to MLB employment -- was finally awarded with the official reigns for next season, well, the Camden walls just about came tumbling down.

The Orioles lost 30-3 -- yes, 30-3 -- to the offensively impotent Rangers in the first of a day-night doubleheader. That's the most in American League history. (This means a lot, because -- or so I hear -- the American League is f*n old.) Four different Orioles had more than four RBI's, and the runs were scored in bunches of 4, 6, 9, and 10. That is utterly ridiculous.

Holdout is over-

Running back Larry Johnson has ended his holdout and signed a new six-year, $45 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. The contract locks up Johnson until 2012, and guarantees him $19 million, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports.

The Kansas City Star reports that Johnson will make $27.7 million over the first three years of the extension.

Johnson reported to Chiefs camp today and practiced with the team. Johnson is presumably in good shape, as he is already getting carries with the starting unit, and he worked on live pass-blocking drills. John Clayton of ESPN reported that Johnson could play in Thursday night's preseason game against the Saints.

Busch wins at soggy Michigan-

Kurt Busch found victory lane for the second time in three races in the special Tuesday version of the 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The race, originally scheduled for Sunday, suffered through two straight complete washout days and a 45-minute fog delay Tuesday.
