Here's the thing about pre-season previews. It's a time for people to sound off and pass judgment on who will be hot and who will be not. While many craft these learned opinions from years of the kind of experience that I don't have, I do think that making pre-season predictions about anything past the first month of the regular season is, really, pretty arbitrary. We all know that certain teams should do well, but Shaq could spring his toe kicking one of those new basketballs into the stands, Kobe could jinx himself with all that ‘new number, new man' silliness, or Dirk…

As the Jazz training camp begins in beautiful downtown Boise, I’m reminded of a question that’s been in the back of my mind. Looking at this year’s schedule, this team indeed has their work cut out for them. The Jazz have six extended road trips this season, four of them focused on Eastern conference teams. If the Jazz hope to break into the playoffs, these trips will be vital to achieve that goal. There hasn’t been a lot of Jazz coverage lately. Of the last five times I’ve visited hoopshype.com and searched for “Jazz,” only once did it yield a result. That result was a pre-season write up of the team that suggested that the boys of the blueish purple-y color will be lucky to make the playoffs. Around town, it feels like the only real Jazz oriented water cooler conversation remains the 'once a season Kirenliko free-bee' story.
