NFL  > Kansas City Chiefs  > DEAR MATT CASSEL : BIG TIME BUST or FRANCHISE MUST ?
July 15, 2009, 02:19 AM
ATTENTION MATT CASSEL & CHIEFS FANS : DIE - HARD NEW ENGLAND Fan Here ... Watched a lot of bad QBs in my time rootin' for the Pats . For every Steve Grogan or Drew Bledsoe that laced 'em up here in Foxboro - there have been 20 Tony Easons . I was sittin' in the stands back in 2001 the day the reigns were turned over to some unknown doe-eyed NOBODY named BRADY . We won the game ( Colts ) - but this new Qb didn't particularly impress me ( Guess I was wrong ) I felt the same way about you Cassel - only way worse . I thought YOU should have been cut in preseason , and by week 4 was prayin' that we 'd bring in a veteren ( hell even re-enlisting Vinny D or Flutie seemed wise ) . WELL ...I WAS WRONG ( Again ) You turned out to own the same competitive spark that Tom Brady had at the start of his career ... only with BETTER mechanics ( and quicker feet ) .Don't get me wrong - I don't know anybody that thinks Matt Cassel isn't still raw and won't make young qb mistakes ( but shoot , Brady couldn't even get the Pats back to the playoffs in his year 2 ). Given the chance ~ I have no doubt you can play Qb in the NFL at a high level and I beleieve KC just landed themselves the best Qb they've had since Montana's swan song . It's very fitting that it will be exactly 40 years ago this season that KC enjoyed their one and only Super Win : In my opinion -THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS JUST TOOK A GIANT LEAP TOWARD RETURNING TO THEIR ONCE GREAT TRADITION OF WINNING ( see Stram / Dawson / Garrett / Lanier ) . Good luck Matt , we'll be watchin' up here in Mass and pullin' for you ( unless of course ~ your playin' u-know-who ) . PS - Don't know if you noticed but we ended up takin' Eugene Chung ( Oregon safety ) with that 2nd rounder we got from Scott for you - If he ends up being half the player u turned out to be ....we'll be happy .

2008 Matt Cassel Stats = 63.4 % 3,693 yards 21 tds 11 Ints

July 15, 2009  02:38 PM ET

Not Dan Fouts -esque . . . but for a 1st time starter ...Very respectable .

July 15, 2009  02:39 PM ET

Only time will tell.

He sure got paid yesterday.

i think Scott Pioli knows what hes is doing

Quite the gamble for a player with only one year of experience. Especially considering that in that one year he was protected by one of the most stacked teams in the league.

Yeah but a gamble the Chiefs really had to make. They'll win more than 2 games this year and for the future at QB, I think they are set with Cassel.

Thigpen was average last year and you can't risk it with brittle Brodie Croyle.

The Chiefs had to do this and can anyone really argue with it? Best move possible for Chiefs & Cassel.

Chiefs may not win much more than the 2 games they accumilated in 2008
( tough schedule + putrid D = losing )
But if they stay the course ( and use their high draft picks wisely again in 2010 )
They could have a fighting chance in a few years .

hey cassel ..... pssst from the steelers .... BOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
chiefs fans may want to watch that tape to see what they are really getting. That wasn't in the 1st month and that was the career back up in full bloom.
any opposing team should just play james harrisons voice over the P.A. ..... cassel will wet himself and start fumbling.

Oh I agree 100% that they needed to make a move, and I'm actually pretty impressed with the moves they've made so far. I'm just not sure that Cassel is the commodity they should've broke the bank on. Time will tell.

cassel wont be like tom brady........Matt will never have a hot of wife

A big question a lot of people don't think about is head coach Todd Haley. He had a young quarterback in Matt Leinart who couldn't hold down a starting job and he was throwing to Boldin and Fitzgerald. Now you ask him to help further groom and develop Cassell and I just don't see him doing it.

Otay . . . I have to admit Cassel vs. the Steelers D was hard to watch
( but in fact , Cassel actually helped engineer a halftime lead up until the wheels came off in the 3rd / 4th quarter )
At any rate that was a total team implosion & considering Pittsburgh went on to dominate the rest of the league ...no great shame there.
Sorry to see some Steeler fans still carryin' a chip on their shoulder ( AFC Championship beat-downs )
I know plenty of Pats fans that tip their cap to the Steelers' recent accomplishments .

Matt Cassel completes 21% of his passes past 20 yards when he has Randy Moss and it is getting this kind of praise? Ridiculous

July 18, 2009  10:37 PM ET

NO ONE expected Brady to go down the way he did, in the first game of the season, no less. We all laughed a little at the idea that Cassel would ever have to actually PLAY! But that's exactly what he did...he stepped up and went from text-book smart to street-smart in a hurry. This isn't to say he's playing at the level that he's capable of, but he will. Belicheck sent him off with a guarenteed salary, with one of the BEST judges of talent in the league, and with one of the most versitile defensive players in the league. That kid WILL hit his stride, and it's going to be a lot of fun to watch football in the next few years. BTW, Cassel already HAS a hot wife.

Well he probably won't land a Giselle look-a-like...but if he can get a ring or two plus that contract he won't have any trouble luring some hotties of his own.
