Years ago, I worked overnight delivering Italian bread and pastry for a local bakery. I alwats had the "FAN" on. listening to Steve Sommers, Joe Beningo or Tony, I'm sorry I can't recall his last name, the boxing expert. Each one was very informative. I would have to say though, I always thought Joe Beningo was the class of the station. His knowledge of sports was incredible. He handled all his callers with dignity, unlike Mike Francessa, who I thought was the biggest A Hole there. Anyway, there were always a few callers that you could guarentee would call every night. SHORT AL, DORIS FROM REGO PARK, MERRIAM,the Islanders fan, BOB, who would end his call by saying "Go Buckeyes!" VINNNIE FROM MANHATTEN, and the list goes on. But of all the callers, SHORT AL impressed me the most, Because of his name and the sound of his voice, along with his Brooklyn accent, my mental picture of him was of Louie the soda jerk, from the old Bowery Boys movies. Louie was a short guy , who wore the typical white uniform and white paper hat, and smoked a cigar. So whenever he called, this is who I pictured talking to the host. But Short Al, who was a mailman, was a wealth of knowledge. He was a walking encyclopedia of New York baseball, Giants, Dodgers, and Yankees. He even talked about how Gil Hodges lived in Brooklyn and how he used to deliver mail to his house, He would often talk about the players that lived in the area and how they would take the subway to and from the stadiums, And how friendly they were to all the locals.
Does anyone else remember any of those callers, or hosts?
