MMA  > General MMA  > Frank Mir says Griffin is the answer to the A.Silva Riddle
August 7, 2009, 09:34 AM
Frank Mir is back at the announcer table on Sunday for WEC 42 in Las Vegas, but you can bet that he'll be checking out UFC 101 the night before as Forrest Griffin takes on Anderson Silva. Mir and Griffin trained a lot together before the Brock Lesnar fight and they share the same boxing coach, Jimmy Gifford. Mir gives props to Silva but told KRKO's Jeff Aaron that Griffin may be the guy best suited to take down the UFC's highest ranked fighter on many pound-for-pound lists:

???The one thing that maybe could be a wrench in [Silva's] machine and his style, is that he is so great of a counter fighter. He???s so skilled with these movements. If I could pick a guy that could beat him, it???s a guy that could rough him up. Okay, fight ugly, fight mean, come forward. Are you gonna take a shot or two?"

Mir suggests too often opponents in the past have let Silva control space:

"Don???t ever take the pressure off this guy. You can???t play cat and mouse with him. I don???t think anyone in MMA could sit there and play kick for kick, punch for punch, and use footwork and head work and come out on the winning end against Anderson."

In spite of the fact that Griffin is a 3-to-1 underdog, Mir is looking for the upset:

"So, if I did have to pick a guy, I would pick Forrest. He has a high work ethic, [he's a] bigger guy, very aggressive, very strong and well-rounded."

So Griffin's gameplan is the key to the fight. Mir pointed out that his gameplan was flawed against Brock Lesnar, saying he thought the big guy would want to stand and it never happened. Listen here for the entire 15-minute interview where Mir also breaks down Sunday's WEC card.
