MLB  > Kansas City Royals  > Fixing the Royals

I was 2 years old in 1985, the last time the Royals made the playoffs. Now, at age 27, I am once again frustrated to see that our ownership still doesn't get it and our team still can't compete. I think I could solve our problems... So here's a little advice to move things along.

1. Fire the entire scouting department. The MLB draft can be a crap shoot, but our team never hits. Four prospects in the last 7 years have the real opportunity to be good in the league (Butler, Gordon & Grienke. Soria was a rule 5 pick). That's not good enough. I'm sorry, but its time for J.J. Picollo to hit the road. One suggestion for a replacement would be Frank White. Frank knows talent and he would take pride in hand picking the talent to rebuild this franchise.

2. Trainer Nick Swartz and the training staff have been with the team for 19 years. During this time, players like Jason Grimsley and Wally Joiner admitted to steroid use, stars like Mike Sweeney developed cripling back problems and promising pitchers like Jose Rosado or Mike MacDougal flamed out after showing good stuff. Its time for Nick and company to hit the road.

3. Change the losing environment: Shake it up a bit and spend as much money as possible to get a winning manager with a reputation in here. A guy like Larussa or Bud Black would command respect and would also signify the change in our culture. Too many first time managers have come through here since 1992 (Hal McRae, Bob Boone, Tony Muser, Tony Pena, Tre Hillman). Look at what happened in Detroit when they finally brought in Jim Leyland. They went from 106 losses to the World Series almost overnight. We have to re-establish a belief in the management and coaching staff.
