NFL  > Denver Broncos  > What to do at QB?
August 20, 2009, 10:26 PM
I have 2 things: (1) with Cassel playing horribly, this proves that he was just a product of Josh McDaniel's QB friendly system and great WR play and he is worth nothing more than being a back up QB. (2) My first point REALLY tells you how bad Kyle Orten is!!! He is playing like a blind high schooler.

Kyle's actually not that bad. I have to admit after the first Broncos pre-season game that might be hard to believe unless you'd followed his progress the last few years. Here's the deal with Orton. Generally he reads defenses well and adjusts well. He is the archetypal game manager, won't win many due to outstanding stuff that he does, but won't lose many for you. He does not have a strong arm and therefore no long/very few long passes will you see. Notice how Eddie Royal will become a non-entity very quickly in the NFL.

Have faith, McDaniels Will start the better QB, be it Orton or Simms. (I hope :-S)

August 22, 2009  02:05 AM ET

Tom Brandstater is your QB of the future.

6'4 220lb Quarterback
Drafted in the 6th Round
Coached by Josh McDaniels

Sound familiar? Even the names appear similar all the way up through Tom Bra...

Eerie resemblance.

August 22, 2009  02:07 AM ET

Okay, maybe Brandstater is closer to 6'5 but you get the idea.

Good stuff folks. Unfortunately, for all of us, we are simply not smart enough to comprehend what McD is doing. Obviously, the genius knew what he was doing when he named Orton the starter in the offseason without ever having Orton take a snap at Dove Valley. Now, like many other genius', McD is confronted with the very real possibility of an error in judgement (seems to be his MO) and would rather sink in his laurels than make a change. The BIG problem is that he is drowning all of us Broncomaniacs with him.

August 22, 2009  07:52 AM ET

Now, I don't think I can do a better job than McD (would love to try!) but I do have a little football acumen and you NEVER name a starter on a new, rebuilding team w/o seeing the players in camp first. Additionally, when you are 'rebuilding', you NEVER trade away potential top draft picks...especially for 2nd rounders. I like Alp Smith and think he will be a good pro but not at the expense of a potential top ten pick next year. Obviously, I have more shots to shoot but it is fruitless at this point.

I'm not too sure we can make so many predictions based on a pre-season game or two. Wait until the regular season comes around when coaches are going deep into their playbooks attempting to win games.

I don't think Eddie Royals numbers will be affected at all. You make it sound like Royal was Denvers deep threat last year which is far from the truth. While he did catch a 93 yd Pass which undoubtfully was the highlight of his season ( and fantasy owners alike ) Overall Royal was a possesion wr as evidenced by his yds per catch, Royal caught 91 Balls but failed to break 1000 yds ... He only averaged 10.8 yds a reception which is far from a deep threat. Heck if you take away his 93 yard TD , he only averaged 9.9 yds a catch. In 16 games Royal failed to catch a ball over 20 yards in 11 games. And only caught balls of over 30 yds in two games the whole year. Royal is quick and agile but with his size ( 5-9 ) isn't the break away type of reciever that defines a deep threat. I think we see Royals numbers about the same as last year , close to 1000 yds and once again lots of receptions.

August 22, 2009  02:53 PM ET

Sorry Royal only played 15 games ... to correct myself.

August 22, 2009  03:48 PM ET

One preseason game its preseason. Its not Week 6 in the regular season its week 2 of preseason. If he can't play great in Denver o well and on another note there Chris Simms he played good in Tampa until he destroyed his spleen.

Ummmm, HELLOOOO, this was NOT a rebuilding team until this idiot came to town. This was a team a year or two away from a Super Bowl run. He had the simple task of keeping an already top offense rolling, and beefing up the defense. What he did is comparable to if he were to take over as coach of the Vikings and trade Adrian Peterson for Tim Hightower then piss off the Williams Wall to the point were they will more than likely be traded.

Yeh big dilemma- Is Mr Hankey involved in this big discussion ?

August 22, 2009  05:46 PM ET

We're talking about the preseason, right? Let's not get carried away here; it means very little, if anything.

August 23, 2009  02:18 AM ET

First of all, Simms is not the answer at the position. Preseason may not mean anything to most people, but in light of how Cutler played it signaled that he is ready to go toe to toe with anyone. There was a reason why people kept telling the Broncos to sit on the issue and let it cool off- it can have a backlash effect. There will have to be shootouts involving the Broncos and dumping won't work. That trade never should've occured and now alot of people are finding out why-he may be 17-20, but he can perform incredible things in/out of the pocket. Love him or hate him-the Broncos have effectively set their franchise back some years by doing this. Kyle Orton is not getting into a shootout with anyone-regardless of the system. If more people had thought about the consequences of trying to shop a franchise qb, then they wouldn't have done it. NO DRAFT PICKS ARE WORTH A FRANCHISE QB.

Fair point, don't watch the Broncos. Either way, that ball isn't going deep .....

Hey, Gus Freotte is trying to make a comeback right? hahahaha

OK, I never said that Chris Simms was any better than Orten. But I see just like the presidential electionss.... I mean come on Bush and Kerry (one dumb **** and one ****)? Mcain and Obama (one will get you killed in battle and the other will leave you broke and homeless) Orten and Simms.... WHEN WILL WE ACTUALLY GET A DECENT SELECTION TO CHOOSE FROM? They may as well start Brandstander.
