Interesting day today with John Smoltz making his first Redbird start. In the absence of Kyle Lohse, it would be nice if Smoltz could step in, be solid, and give the Birds a reliable 4th starter, at least in the short-term. The Cards top 3 of Carp, Adam and Piniero has been rock-solid over the last couple of months, but they've struggled to find consistency behind them. Between Lohse's injuries and struggles and Todd Wellemeyer's implosions, we've seen a crapshoot from those positions in the rotation.

Smoltz could step in and be a key to this staff down the stretch, let's hope it happens.

The wildcard to me at this point is how Piniero will perform in a post-season setting. Joel has been fantastic this year, but I must admit that I am not 100% sold on him yet. I guess I've just seen too many mediocre starts out of him in the past to believe in him completely. Come playoff time, it's going to be imperative that he step up and produce as that #3 starter.

Sorry this posted twice......not sure why that happened.

Smoltz was awesome again yesterday. I read today where if Lohse comes back he is going to start out in the bullpen. I wonder if that means Smoltz will sty in the rotation a while or what?

After tonight.........I hope the rotation never ever includes Wellemeyer again.

All I have to say is resign Smoltz. From what I saw, he was solid. And I agree with Post 3.

I agree, Redbird. I'd bring Smoltz back for a reasonable amount. He could serve us well in 2010 as a 5th starter or out of the 'pen.
