Interesting day today with John Smoltz making his first Redbird start. In the absence of Kyle Lohse, it would be nice if Smoltz could step in, be solid, and give the Birds a reliable 4th starter, at least in the short-term. The Cards top 3 of Carp, Adam and Piniero has been rock-solid over the last couple of months, but they've struggled to find consistency behind them. Between Lohse's injuries and struggles and Todd Wellemeyer's implosions, we've seen a crapshoot from those positions in the rotation.

Smoltz could step in and be a key to this staff down the stretch, let's hope it happens.

The wildcard to me at this point is how Piniero will perform in a post-season setting. Joel has been fantastic this year, but I must admit that I am not 100% sold on him yet. I guess I've just seen too many mediocre starts out of him in the past to believe in him completely. Come playoff time, it's going to be imperative that he step up and produce as that #3 starter.
