NFL  > Tampa Bay Buccaneers  > Firing your OC with 1 game left in preseason - genius! NOT!
September 3, 2009, 10:45 AM
The only explanation I can imagine is that Jagodzinski opposed the decision to start Leftwich at QB and they had to dump him...

"Let's change our entire offensive game plan 9 days before kick off." Could be the new "innovative end of preseason" game plan... When they say the roster to 53, the Bucs thought to go another way. Good for them !!!

What the hell were they thinking? First of all what in the hell happened? We have no time to be pulling this type of **** at the begining of the season!!!!!!!!

Who did they promote?

Who did they promote?

Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson has been promoted into the job, and he will continue to coach the quarterbacks.

Thanks...thought he played tight end for the Bears?
Just kidding.

Sounds like someone is wiser than a tree full of owls....similar to Denver.

LOL........that would be Greg Olsen and not Greg Olson...........*laffin*

September 3, 2009  07:33 PM ET

What's the difference? They're both of Swedish descent.......or Danish...or Norwegian..........They should have been Vikings then...........lol

September 3, 2009  08:01 PM ET

Well Dang what next?

Promote Barber to join side by side with the glazers?

Man i love my team to death but you can't get any dumber than to drop the OC this close to the preseason when the team has worked on his O scheme the whole off season..... Now what, they gotta either keep the same scheme, or just run around the damn field and try and make somthing happen out of nothing.

Boy just as i think we can win atleast some games i get a huge set back like this!!!

This guy they promoted betta do somthing to make tampa see that he's ready for what the fan can dish out because this aint a good sign at all!!!

In the pre season.... Jeff wasnt the one calling the plays....it was the running backs coach coach Steve Logan running them

Yeah i know, but that is his O scheme that we've trained on all off season right?

September 4, 2009  09:00 AM ET

I guess maybe dude was just to old or to slow with the play calling!!! This is a part of the reason he was released!!!!

"The first sign of trouble came early in training camp, when a couple of Bucs officials noticed that offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski was often relying on his top assistants to develop and install some of the more detailed aspects of the team's offense.

Soon after that, the players caught on. Finally, when it became apparent to almost everyone in the organization that Jagodzinski was something of a novice play-caller as well, the Bucs decided something had to be done.

That something was done Thursday, 10 days before the team's regular-season opener against Dallas, when the Bucs dismissed Jagodzinski and gave quarterbacks coach Greg Olson the added duties of offensive coordinator.

"I have a lot of respect for Coach Jagodzinski and for all the effort he put in here and for the way he did his work," Bucs coach Raheem Morris said. "But we're at the point now where we need to be more precise, more detailed. We're trying to grow here, and if we're not growing constantly then it's time to make a change. That's what we did."

September 4, 2009  09:03 AM ET

"The second sign of problems with Jeff Jagodzinski came early in training camp.

Trying to simulate the game conditions, the Bucs' offensive coordinator studied his play sheet and radioed the plays to quarterbacks coach Greg Olson, who transmitted them to quarterback Byron Leftwich.

At times, the communication was too slow, resulting in delay of game penalties. Too often, Jagodzinski would look at the down and distance and determine on which hash mark the ball was spotted but reverse the formation. Or there would be only a partial play-call. Olson, offensive line coach Pete Mangurian or Leftwich would try to fix the mistake before the snap count.

Jagodzinski took the advice of coach Raheem Morris and others and called plays from the coaches' box above the field, hoping that getting him away from the distraction of the sideline would help."

Jag simply wasn't capable of doing the job. If he's not the one designing the offensive plays, or calling the plays, what was his purpose? Fire him and promote the guy doing the work.
