Tennis  > General Tennis  > Serena's behavior

The biggest shame of the whole debacle was the USTA hiding behind the point penalty scenario. When a player threatens a lines person (I am going to shove this ****#*&g ball down your ****#*&g throat) it is an automatic disqualification. That is all that needed to be said. Ironic, with all the Melanie Oudin comparsions of late Serena once again articulated why she is treated differently. Not because she is black but because she is a bad loser and a bad sportswoman. And did anyone catch the press conference. Far more animated and precocious than when she wins a major semi final and still never admitted to her on court comments. Bad sport AND liar. Hooray for KIM - who won the match any way.

It was a racist call.
We all know that like soccer, cricket, golf and rugby--tennis isn't really a sport.
It's a colonial leftover that fascist Europeans and their colonial operatives can manipulate with outcomes like this one which put Serena out of the money.
President Obama should call an emergency press conference; show us his real birth certificate; and then deport Cjisters. The photo of serena surrounded by angry, predatory, white colonial officials says it all. Every American should step over the line on this one.

Serena never lost with garce...I have no respect for her and her sense of entitlement.Tennis would be better of without her...Plus, if a mom comes out of retirement after 2.5 years and drills Seerena a new one, she should just go away...

I did notice that Venus was foot-faulted SEVEN times in her first match at this US Open. And I remember thinking that it was terribly unfair that these penalties couldn't be challenged by the players and wondered about the lines person. Could Serena's nemesis have been the same person last night? And were there ANY other players in the field of 256 (men and women) who were foot-faulted during the course of this tournament? I recall no others during the matches I saw. Last night's meltdown is so reminiscent of the quarter final US Open match when Serena lost to Capriati because of two outrageous lines calls against her. It was after that that the current system of player challenges was introduced. On that occasion, Serena behaved impeccably. Perhaps the status of foot faults will also now be forced to move in the same direction.

September 13, 2009  12:36 PM ET

Serena didn't lose cause of the foot fault...she didn't lose because of the unsportmanlike conduct point penalty...one she alone is responsible for. She was outplayed by Kim...Kim won the first set, was up 6-5 in the second and Serena was serving down 15-30 when the stuff started.

Serena was smart, she took advantage of the questionable call and went off, moving the attention away from the fact that she was outplayed...and now she can blame her loss on the unfair treatment she got...even though NO ONE made her go off on the lineswoman.

Even in her interview, she said she felt she had a couple aces coming, but got no chance cause she got the penalty...As if...

The plain and simple truth is that her actions and words were inexcusable, period! And at the press conference, she had the gall to say something to the effect of "I don't know what I said." Total lack of class, total immaturity, and completely ridiculous. What an arse.

September 13, 2009  12:50 PM ET

Serena, you displayed nothing but ghastly and beastly behavior here in this match. Too bad you couldn't rise above the occasion. Instead, you combined your verbal vulgarity and menacing body language to show the whole world how well you can threaten anyone. "Who me? I've never been in a fight my whole life..." oh, give me an f-bomb break!!

It's undeniably clear you outdid anything John McEnroe, Nastase or Connors could have ever done wrong. Shame on you, you're no champion and the whole world knows that now!

...and to anyone who would incomprehensibly defend her conduct :enjoy watching the brawls and bloodbaths in football, baseball and hockey. Tennis is no place for women or men to show off and prove their brutality.

Is this a serious post or a failing attempt at satire?

It will be interesting to see what the continued fallout from this episode will be. Serena's threats to the linesperson went far beyond anything McEnroe or Nastase ever did. Obviously, Serena will be fined, but she ought to be suspended from competition for, say, 3 months, with a 1-year probation period as well.
What's next? David Duvall wrapping a lob wedge around a course marshal's neck because of an infavorable ruling?

suspended for 3 months? When's the next Slam? Those are the only things she cares to really show up for anyway...

Suspend her from the next U.S. Open. You're right in that she only cares about the Majors.

It was a complete joke, the statement Serena issued out today. Nowhere in the statement shows any regrets or sorry to the fans about her behavior last night. Threatening a lines person is her passion for the sport???? USTA should disqualify her from the remaining of the tournament...

September 13, 2009  08:49 PM ET

She's a naughty girl and deserves a spanking.

are you surprised? She threatened a fellow player awhile back ago...no remorse there either...going so far as to say she'd deny the comments if the mics hadn't picked up what she said...

I doubt she has any regrets...I doubt she thinks she did anything wrong...she probably thinks she's a victim.

Oh give me a break. A lineswoman of Asian descent gave the footfault call. There was nothing rascist about this. I just hope that if Serena receives some sort of penalty, that she not do what she and Venus have done for years regarding the desert tournament and boycott the US Open.

Serena didn't question whether or not she had footfaulted. I hope you don't interpret this as rascist.

And try telling Tiger Woods that golf isn't a sport.
