NFL  > New York Giants  > Giants-Redskins Penalty/INT Question
September 15, 2009, 11:10 AM
I know this was a couple days ago, but I still haven't figured it out. During the second quarter I believe, Jason Campbell was scrambling out of the pocket and tried to throw a pass. Problem was, he was beyond the line of scrimmage. Corey Webster picked off the pass in an incredible fashion, but that is where I was baffled.

If you have an illegal forward pass, how can it be picked off? That jus doesn't make sense to me. I feel as though the pass should be ignored and the Redskins assessed a penalty. Could anyone else shed some light on the situation

I thought the same thing myself actually, but once reading the rule apparently any forward pass will be illegal only if caught and or dropped by the receiving and/or defending team. Only when a defender intercepts the ball is it a live illegal forward pass. I am sure this does not make anymore sense to you being explained, but it is the definition of the rule. Like I said I was surprised myself as I thought it would just be a penalty, but apparently if you cross the line of scrimmage and throw it to the defender the opposing coach is going to decline the penalty. Think of it this way, when they call the illegal forward pass the coach could decline it regardless of the circumstance, but why decline it if it is in your benefit. Definitely a weird rule.

i think your right. Its a penalty and the giants declined the penalty because the result was an interception. It would be different if the play went dead after he passed the line of scrimmage and he passed it. but the play continues, therefore making it a free play for the defense. had moss caught the bal the Giants would have excepted the penalty.
