So it finally comes to fruition and Phil is a Leaf.

Here is the question though, did the Leafs pay too much? Two 1sts and a 2. I'm going to say yes. The amount that they signed Phil to, if it had come in the form of an offer sheet would have only cost them a 1, 2, and 3. So in my estimation you gave an extra 1 instead of a 3. Did it save so stress and risk? Sure. Is keeping your 1 for a 3 worth it? Now that is the question my friends. My answer is yes.
