NFL  > New York Giants  > With Kenny Phillips out, is Giants D Toast?
September 25, 2009, 11:19 AM
So after the draft I was concerned about a lack of depth at safety, and I got blasted for saying so, but I really am concerned over the loss of KP, and the Giants' not having addressed it in FA or the draft.

Here is why I - the Steelers & Colts D's are not the same without Polamalu & Sanders, because they cannot run the same gameplan without them in their. Michael Johnson is still in my mind realistically an/a above-average/good safety that is limited to what the system dictates (which I hope I am wrong about), and CC Brown does not inspire confidence at all, but then again he was in Texas where they did not have the front 7 the Giants have.

Terrell Thomas appparently got some looks at safety, as well, but I cannot find anything to indicate that it was serious for long term consideration, or if he played well. Adam Rouse, thee new signee was let go by the Pack because he was not physical, lacked speed and general awareness.

I hope I am wrong about this, but I think this might be a huge issue, as much as Plax was last year - the difference being that they will have much longer to adjust. The next 3 weeks are against teams that they should beat, although the Buccs have been passing well and could take advantage of the "missing" piece and potential communication issues, missed coverages, reads, and so forth. Further, will the Giants be able to rrun the same D?

It hurts, no doubt. Is it a Huge Issue? I wouldn't go that far, just because it is early still and the Plax issue came late and the offense never got the time to make the right changes. I rather have a 75% defense in week 3 than in week 14 you know.

I trust the coaches enough to make the right Adjustments. I'm concerned about getting ran over by a caddilac without Canty and Tuck there. AP will have to bring his game up to a level he's never been. Kiwi and Osi can bring it, I do think we are still strong at forcing the takeaways with AP making the right reads. AP is the key and the guy I trust the most to run the Defense

Funny the comparison to the Colts because it's true...Eli has to do exactly what his Brother is doing but Eli needs the running game to get going now and control the clock. Their best friend on the Road has always been the other teams Stadium clock. Get those Red zones scores because a FG won't do with a weak Defense.

No need for the Panic Button just yet... Having 2 divisional wins is a good security blanket, by week 8 when we face the eagles we should be back to 90% on defense. I don't think our record by week 8 will be any worse than 5-2

Besides that..yes its still time to panic..let alone your problem in the red zone when you face a good team.

September 27, 2009  04:51 PM ET

Coming from theGuys team who had to put up a 30+ points just to beat them and allowed the Bucs to put up 450 yards on them...LOL

Guess we have yet to face a Good team..LOL

Yeah,The Giants should really panic...3-0 overall and 2-0 in the division, lets throw in the towel right now! ;) So,we beat The 'Boys A WEEK AGO and you apparently still have an issue with it. Let it go,man. You'll be much better off in the long run lol.

Um, Sam... Guess you don't get it...

We are talking about the Bucs. Again, with KC and the Raiders next, not much to worry about.

Then look at these remaining games....

The Saints, Philly (twice), Arizona, San Diego, Dallas and the Vikes to close ou the year...

Let's see... Drew Brrew Brees and the NO passing attack...
Arizona... Ditto...
San Diego... Remember last time in SD? Giants got their asses handed to them...
Philly, well, let's see - Brent Celek, DeSean Jackson... oh yeah and this dude named Brian Westbrook and that QB... Donovan McNabb?
In Dallas, the team pulled off a great win, but still the second divisional game is always tougher, and Dallas is dangerous.
The Vikes... AP ring a bell?

The Giants won't be able to be taken seriously as contenders if they do not go @ least 5-2 in those games. One loss will be to Philly (if not two), The Saints are just scary, and one of the other teams has just just a good a shot to win one, especially with a guy like KP out.

Again... KP out is likely to mean trouble.

Oh, and RIGGS... Red Zone issues???? Let's recall Tony's butter finger move wheen he was the holder on FG attempts, the INT he threw at the end of the game in the playoffs against the Giants when the Giants won the Super Bowl, and well, all of last season... When the Boys were picked to win the SB, and did what? Coughed up a hair ball, missed the playoffs, and last I recall, their red zone offense wasn't all that good.

Besides, the Lions ranked 5th in Red Zone TD% last year, yet went 0-16, and the Adrian Peterson-led Vikes were somewhere down around 28th...

RIGGS - take your little moral victories and meaningless stats to mommy, and worry about the only one that matters... the one in the "W" column.

What I get is ..I TRUST OUR COACHES!!!

We all know it was just the Bucs... But then again you have to look at it vs the Cowboys, they had 450 total yards offense on what I beleive to be their Starters, 280 on passing alone on starting corners..The Giants are all banged up but look what the Cowboys Defense Allowed!!!

300 Yards passing vs the Bills starting corners...The Giants are all banged up but look what the Bills Defense Allowed!!!

You have to give them (Bucs) some respect..Which you did here"although the Buccs have been passing well and could take advantage of the "missing" piece and potential communication issues, missed coverages, reads, and so forth." Then turn around and Say.."we are talking about the bucs"... RIGGS..Dude ..you played Tampa...They are still a NFL team and yeah a weak one and we smacked the hell out of them, something 2 other teams can't say they did with their victories over the Bucs. I think we showed where we belong in the League. Not a statement game by far but a good start to when to build as a team for when that statement game comes vs the Saints.

My point is, yeah we have some soft games and it's the perfect time to get guys Healthy and guys like C.C Brown, Bruce Johnson, Terrell Thomas can get familier with the Defense. So when we get the Saints, Cardinals, Eagles, Chargers (All pass heavy teams) our young guys will have enough game time played, Aaron Ross and Dockery will be back... Canty and Tuck will be ready to go.

Even tho it was "the Bucs" it's good to get the confidence to score in the red zone, To run the Ball again, no turn overs, no mistakes... We are far from hitting the panic button on Defense..The Cowboys have their Finger on theirs, Redskins are just a mess all over the place and the Eagles..Well they got Spanked by the Saints, Are their Defense ready to play with the big boys? I think the Giants are still in a good position...I have enough trust for our coaching staff.

I agree. It is a problem that just has not been exposed yet. The only saving grace is that you have to believe GM. Reese and Coughlin had a back up plan. Give them credit for that. Someone already on the roster most likely..They have earned trust in their personnel decisions. There is no one out there to be had that is better than what they have now. I suspect a CB will be converted.

Mongo dont know

If you guys would ignore this Riggs person, he'd go away........maybe go away mad, but he'd go away.
His parents were childless is why he spouts off the way he does. He's due for a brain transplant soon, and they're going to put a hummingbird brain in him to see if he can fly backwards.

Yeah, yeah.

I have always aid I trust in Jerry and company, but the reality is that the beginning of the season always produces statistical anomolies like the Bucs passing attack, the Jets starting 3-0 with a Rookie QB (though I am silently rooting he is not a flash in the pan), and so.

Also, remember the Bucs offense has been re-tooled with new coaching and schemes, so the first two games were almost blind for the Cowgirls and Bills. The Giants at least has 2 games to review film on...
