MLB  > Boston Red Sox  > Why Lester is a better choice to start a series
October 6, 2009, 10:53 PM
Jon Lester is clearly the best choice this year to be the Sox #1 starter in a playoff series. It has nothing to do with Josh Beckett's performance and more to do with the variables. Here is what I mean:

1. Lester is a lefty. A lefty vs another teams #1 is a favorable matchup for the Sox.
2. Assuming Lester wins game one, having Josh Beckett take the mound in game two puts the Sox in a very good position to take a 2-0 lead.
3. Assuming the Sox lose game one, Beckett isn't a bad choice to put your entire season on.
4. Jon Lester has consistently been the Red Sox best pitcher all year. Historically Josh Beckett has been the man, but the Red Sox are about today and tomorrow. Just ask Pedro Martinez or Manny Ramirez or even Nomar Garciaparra.
