NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Still Not Excited....
October 12, 2009, 12:35 AM
Congradulations to Miles Austin on breaking Bob Hayes's record for single game receiving yards...Happy for DeMarcus Ware finally getting on board with two sacks...Good job by Jay Ratliff on the blocked field goal..."HOWEVER" it took overtime play for these lackluster Cowboys to defeat a 0-5 team. I've accepted the fact that this years version of the "America's Team" is no better than last years. When I look at the manner inwhich they were lucky enough to beat teams like Carolina and Kansas City, I must admit (and so must you) that this is a less than mediocre bunch that continues to underacheive. I just can't get excited about yet another poor showing in the win over another weak team...

Well, look what the tide brought in and the sharks couldn't eat! A troll!

You should be more original in your statements, Jets fan. Tell us something we've never heard before, then maybe you can convince us of how intelligent you are.

Well put! I was relegated to the web and Redzone yesterday and was looking at fan comments and messages on two boards. The thing that struck me was sad people who have or create an account like "Cowboyhater, Cowqueerssuk, DalASS-smasher etc etc" just to post hate comments during a game. I mean honestly get a life, these folks watch just to rail on a team. We all have teams we like or dislike more than others but this sort of behavior borders on psychotic or so desperately juvenile that these folks need some help or maybe a life.

October 12, 2009  10:50 AM ET

there were good signs yesterday, but we got started a little late and it was too close. dallas has to make coaching changes and when this happens it would seems that the team has the potential to really turn the corner and take that next step.

Well, I've come to the conclusion that Wade, Garrett and whoever else, are out of their league. I have been patient, but I see no change, unless it's for the worse. Wade should retire to his dad's horse ranch and help him raise thoroughbreds. He should have enough money and he lost any chance for accolades years ago. He's just not a head coach and neither is Garrett.

Garrett can go somewhere out of sight and out of mind. I never thought he was that good of a QB in his playing days. You have book smart people who have no common sense and vice versa. Garrett has no common sense as you can tell by his rotations and play calling. Example....Choice averaged 12.5 ypc in the game, but on the first possession of OT, a still limping Barber was in there. Three and out. If KC was any good, we would have lost and probably even before any OT.

I'm going to hold out hope that this team will get it together, but if they don't, then I'm not going to let myself be surprised by it. The next 4 games are likely going to show just what this team is made of. Then, two "winnable games", and after that we'll be lucky to win 2 of the last 5. You guys think maybe we're back in the 5-11's yet? Or close?

These trolls that come in here are easily run off, but you can't get all whacked out of shape and start screaming and such at them. That's what they want. So, if I can't blind them with "brilliance" then I baffle them with BS......and I am an old BS'er......lol..........

Now, if this Jets fan don't consider himself a troll, he'll come back and talk a bit more reasonable, but I doubt he will.

While I'd agree that Phillips et al. are not blowing anyone away with schematic or tactical superiority, it's not entirely their fault. It's an average to above-average team coached by an average coach. That leads to a steady diet of 9-7 seasons. Look at their parts
1. O- line : average at best. Can't decide if they want to be good at run or pass blocking so they are mediocre at best at everything.
2. QB: too much time has been spent dissecting this already but at the end of the day I'd say he's at least average.
3. RB: would be great but health has left them in trouble
4. WR: No true #1 and the supposed #1 is dinged up leaving a bunch of 3's 4's out there.
5. TE: Great
6. D line: Can't figure out what's wrong here but not making a consistent impact regardless. Average
7. Back 7 - might as well lump them in together for the sake of the secondary so they can be upgraded to average.

What does this add up to? An average team. Great coaching staff would lead this team to playoffs and a likely early exit and they don't have a great coaching staff. They have, you guessed it, an average staff.

i don't know.... are we that bad? maybe. you are right, the month after our bye will tell a lot of the story. and the last 5 are tough. i'm guessing 9-7 or maybe even 8-8, unless something "clicks" with these guys or coaching changes are made. surely, JJ can see where this is all headed. maybe he's just content riding it out and overhauling coaches for next year.

I watched that game yesterday. Romo and his newest toy, Austin, looked pretty sharp, but I saw mistakes and some dumb penalties. The offensive line especially. Plus, the defense gave up points late in the game too. It was a near-disaster against an inferior team. But, they did win, and - winning beats losing any day, when you only have 16 games to prove yourself

Good points. When Jimmy Johnson was the coach, we had a RB named Curvin Richards, backing up Emmitt. He was a pretty good running back in his own right, but he tended to fumble. He did just that in a game, and Johnson told him not to do it again. Well, he did. He had 2 fumbles in that game, and I don't remember what game, or who the 'Boys played, or even if they won. The next day, Richards was cut.

Johnson didn't tolerate many mistakes, but this bunch seems to.The players aren't held accountable for their mistakes, actions, or anything. Or so it seems. Wade said he was going to be "tougher" this year. I have yet to see it.

The O line is starting to age a bit. They missed their chance in 07.

Austin finally stepped it up, but after dropping two. Crayton had hands of concrete.

I believe Jenkins and Scandrick will be fine once they get another season under their belts.

The D line needs to get their act together, and the good thing I saw is they didn't quit. I liked that hurdle on the blocked punt......lol....but, if that KC player would have not had his head up his ass, chances are he would not have been hurdled.

The 'Boys were lucky to win tho.

Still too much inconsistency, if you ask me. Play calling leaves a lot to be desired as well.

Curvin Richards, I remember him from play at Pitt. I agree with you to a point about tolerating mistakes but at the end of the day these guys are supposedly professionals and have to be held > 50% accountable.

Crayton is actually Latin for "stone hands".

My point in all that rant was simply that this is a pretty standard collection of talent that is currently on the roster and given that Jimmy Johnson is not leading them on to the field, the expectations should be calibrated as such.

Short of a miracle, Phillips will be fired at the end of the season as will Garrett and J Jones' mistake in handling this whole thing years prior will send Phillips into a retirement that is probably premature (the guy was a solid coordinator) and will set Garrett's career back 5-10 years.

Here's a perspective from left field: 60% of our defensive starters are from SEC and ACC schools. They are for the most part good college players who played at schools with great football reputations. These players have underachieved at the NFL level. That's what happens when you draft based on the school rather than the individual.

Some of these players aren't the best fit for the Phillips 34 scheme. For instance Bradie James has good straight-ahead skills but lacks side-to-side speed. The other LB's and DB's must take up the slack and the Cowboys get exposed on this most every game. The trouble is we've built our entire defense around him. I'm sure he was a great fantasy pick for JJones on draft day but.......does he really fit this particular scheme?

October 12, 2009  04:44 PM ET

Lots of good points here. I think the difference between any two NFL teams on any given Sunday is very small and it comes down to "want to" (as in the desire to win) and coaching. Sadly the prima donnas in Texas think that a victory is owed to them and the coaches cannot get them to the next level to achieve their potential Look at the Cardinals last year, people scoffed at them even being "allowed" into the playoffs but for that short 5 week span Warner and thier coaching staff "willed" them to perform and they got to the superbowl and nearly won it. Now the luster is off and they are back to average.

The Landry and JJ eras were very different. Landry was ahead of his time as was Gil Brandt. JJ was a motivational genius in one of his books he explains why he cut Richards; not just for the fumbles but also what that type of sloppy play would bring into the fieldhouse and into the playoffs. As long as JJ has a hand in the mix of personnel and refuses to hand over the reins to a real Coach better get used to 10-6 down to 7-9s and heaven forbid we go into the Playoffs and lose another, all the haters will flood the sites.
