NFL  > Kansas City Chiefs  > Cut Larry Johnson
October 12, 2009, 01:17 AM
Larry Johnson had 21 carries for 37 yards on Sunday. He's had 93 attempts and gained only 226 yards in 2009. He's averaging just over 2.4 yards per carry and just set the team record for career rushing attempts (1,336). Larry is just a month shy of his thirtieth birthday (when runningback careers die in the NFL) and the sad truth is that he's lost it.

Yes, the Chiefs' offensive line is terrible. Their offensive line may be the worst in the history of the NFL, but that doesn't change the fact that the Chiefs need to release Larry. He doesn't hit the hole hard, he falls down on first contact and can't get short yardage. He's been a work-horse that Herm Edwards and Carl Peterson ran into the ground and his time as a productive starter in the league is over.

If Todd Haley and Scott Pioli are true in their statement that there are no sacred cows, then they will finally part ways with Johnson. Who will take over the duties of running back for the Chiefs???

A. Jackie Battle runs hard and tries, but his talent level isn't at a starting caliber.
B. Jamaal Charles has fumbling issues and can't be trusted to secure the ball.
C. Free agency...
I. T.J. Duckett - At 254 pounds, at least we know this guy can take a hit and make it across the goal line if he needs to.
II. Ahman Green - He can't be any worst than Johnson.
III. Dominick Rhodes - He might be a productive veteran for the Chiefs to bring in.
IV. Tatum Bell - He was a product of good O-Line in Denver. He's probably not a good fit in KC.

I forgot to mention that the Chiefs won an arbitration case in the off-season that will allow them to cut Johnson without penalty. They have some financial flexibility that makes this a realistic option.

I was hopeing the Chiefs would trade him a couple of years ago when he was holding out for the big contract. Thats the year Wille Roaf and Will Shields retired, and they were the reason he looked like a top RB.
