NFL  > Cleveland Browns  > Ugly game
October 12, 2009, 10:33 AM
The first win of the season was an ugly one, but at least the Browns put one in the win column. On a side note, how many more times is DA going to hit his receivers on the money, only to have it hit them in the chest or go right through their hands? with some more time to gel, that should get better, I hope.

For the first time in along time a team made a lot more mistakes then the browns. Instead of the browns getting numerous stupid penalties Offsides, False Starts ext or wasting timeouts it was the oppent. Buffalo did more to lose this game then Browns did to win.
Ugly win is better than a pretty loss.

I was watching game highlights, when they got to this game they just told the score and moved to the next game.

wow... as a Browns fan, I really disagree with this statement, and I am not coming down on you for making it... but let's talk about this.

I would agree with this statement if we were generally playing well and we had a bad game and squeeked out a win.

However, to be a decade into rebuilding a team.... I'd MUCH rather take a pretty loss. A pretty loss would mean:

1. We played well, with limited mistakes and we just got beat
2. We have a quarterback who is making good decisions and is accurate
3. The score would be something like 20 to 17 and the offense would do the scoring
4. We have a balanced running game and recievers catch the ball
5. The nation wouldn't be (still) laughing at us
6. All in all we would be much farther than we are today

As I see it now, 1 - 6 is false and, in the end, it could cost us a draft pick.

I'm not going anywhere... so don't get me wrong.... but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that this win does anything but bring attention to how pathetic our team is. As a Browns fan it pains me to say it... but it's the truth.

LowCountryBrownsFan, I'm just curious, did you actually watch where those passes were thrown, or just listen to the idiot announcers tell everyone it was a good pass. Those receivers really had to contort themselves for the ball to hit them in the hands. There were a few good passes, but most were thrown behind the receiver. Don't blame it on the wind, Buff. completed 51%., Cle, 11%. Make a point of watching how many times Andersen's receivers are able to actually reach for the ball on the run vs stop or reach behind while attempting to catch the ball.

October 12, 2009  02:51 PM ET

OK, now both QB's have had 2 1/2 games. All things being equal (and they are not because of the unbalanced play calling in the Balt. game) Quinn is out performing Andersen. The difference in the last 2 games has been the offensive line play and the rushing game. in the first 3 games, we had 214 yds. rushing. In the last 2 games, we rushed for 317 yds.

NAME YDS CMP% YDS/A INT% RAT

Quinn 400 60.8 5.41 4.1 62.9

Anderson 384 46.4 4.57 6.0 39.0

I still put a lot of the blame on the play calling. In the 1st qtr, our rushing game had them on their heals. You run to set up the pass, we kept running. As soon as they had to change their way of defending us, we should have called an audible changing the play, and burnt them with a pass. Mangini needs to send his off. cord. to take a class in offensive play calling 101! This is in addition to Andersen learning (at this point in his career) how to lead a receiver.

I watched the whole game. I have a DVR, so I could go back and watch the passes again. Yeah there were some that were bad passes and some that were a little behind the recievers. But, there were six or seven passes that were right there when the WRs made their cuts that were flat out dropped. Did you see the pass that Royal dropped that hit him in stride and over his shoulder? I'm sorry, but if you think that every pass has to be perfect and in stride you expect too much out of a QB and not enough from the WRs. Did you watch the Colts game or the Patriots game? What about the Dallas or Denver game? Welker isn't hit in the numbers in stride every catch. He adjusts and makes plays. Same with Brandon Marshall, Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss, etc. Cleveland WR lack consistancy and the ability to adjust to the ball. Harrison dropped 3 passes out of the backfield on Sunday--one was poorly thrown, but it still hit him in the hands. He usually catches pretty well out of the backfield, but not against the Bills. There are a lot of problems still with this Cleveland team, but the fact remains that the two games that DA started, the team has responded and they were in position to win both games. With some more time to get to know his young receivers, hopefully the offense will get better.

throwing the ball down the field opens up that run game.

The play calling is pretty bad though. They ran the same run play probably 15 times, right up the middle, where Cribbs would fake the end around. Cribbs ran for 30+ yards on the one time they gave it to him on that play. I would have liked to have seen him get it a few more times when the Bills were stuffing the middle of the field.

I think that the Defense played really well on Sunday though. Mike Adams was all over the place, and they did a good job against TO and Evans. evans and TO combined for 6 catches for 55 yards.

That makes sense, 17 yds. passing set up 171 yds of rushing in the Bills game?????????

I don't have the game DVR'd, so I can't go back and watch it, but is the Royal non-catch the one where he reached over his back shoulder and his hands were up against the face-guard of the defender?

Yes, the defense played well and did make the Bills look as silly as us. Probably a big reason their coach will not last the season.

Another receiver of interest is the play of Edwards last night. How did he discover his hands after being traded? In the Cincy. game the passed to him once (he dropped it), and then never gave him another look. I thought Andersen and Edwards were buddies. Did Andersen loose confidence in him, or was he told not to look to him as the primary?

October 13, 2009  11:07 AM ET

This game showed me that the Browns offense was worse from last week. Our defense played really well. Wimbley and Adams had a great day....but really, what defense wouldn't do well wehn the other team committed as many penalties as we did the first game of the preseason against GB?

Our passing game is a joke. Yes, some of the receivers should have caught some passes but I am convinced most of the blame is on DA. I've said this before- DA passes are so inconsistent our receivers don't know where to expect the ball. The only thing that is conistent is the speed (100 mph) at which he throws a 5yard-25 yard pattern. Have you ever ran a 7 yard slant where the QB rockets a 80mph football that is slightly behind you? Its obvious that you can't teach touch, otherwise DA would be a pretty good QB by now.

I dont think we should give up on Quinn. His arm is no worse than other QBs in this league. DA reached his peak in 2007 and wont get any better than that. BQ hasnt even been given a full season. What is the use of starting Quinn against 2 undefeated teams and one half against one of the top AFC North teams then pulling him when he would have the chance to play cincy or buffalo? The competition he faced was the best the NFL has to offer and he didn't really even make mistakes.

My point is this. I don't give a crap about how "games are more fun ot watch with DA in there because he occasionally connects on a deep ball". If the browns ever got to a level where they would be competitive and every posession mattered DA would never be the answer. He throws too many picks and makes too many mistakes. If the browns get rid of BQ its going to haunt us.

that was the one where DA dropped it right over his shoulder, while he wsa in single coverage and the safety help over the top was out of position. There was no contact with a defender.

the royal drop cost us a respectable win. He was wide open only a safety in the area. He dropped quite possibly a touchdown pass. As. for people blamin anderson for the placement of the ball, when you are a wide receiver or tight end waht is that your paid to do????????
OH YEAH CATCH THE FREAKIN BALL. There are no excuses when they drop it, if the balls in your area you catch it simple as that. I thought we got rid of stone hands but i couldnt tell he wasgone last week.

Oh Yeah i felt bettter about the cinci loss than that boring and JV game I sat through last week

You're right about WRs. If they get their hand on the ball they should reel it in because that is their job. Why is it that the amount of dropped passes increases so much when he is in????? Could it be that DA does not know how to throw with touch? Brett Favre is one of the hardest throwing QBs in NFL history but still throws with touch on short patterns and dump offs to his RBs. DA has got the same "touch" that Ryan Leaf or Jeff George had.

I have watched DA in game situations and even in training camp and his throws under 10 yards are about as consistent as a schizophrenic.
