If you NEED an off season then TAKE an off season. Remember Abe Lincoln?? He freed the slaves...
The ATP carpets the entire year with tourneys (250, 500, 1000, and slams 2000 pts.) A player misses a tourney at his own risk (ranking, money, prestige and perhaps legal consequences). The top ten players have played an average of 22 tournaments a piece through Oct. 19. From the US Open to December there are are 15 events for ranking plus the ATP Finals which has no points. If you spend all year in hotels, on planes to all parts of the world and your only companion is your coach, that's a tthat's not a lifestyle that many pro athletes would want.
I apologize for the typo........................."that's not a lifestyle that many pro athletes would want."
Okiehomer,
I'm so glad you are free. I'm sure you have read other posts throughout this board on racism. Given the posts that have been given on this specific topic, DUDE you stand out like a sore thumb on which you are trying to embark upon. What do you want to convey as constructive criticism here. What does a slave has in relationship of this topic. Better yet are you able to communicate what you wish to convey with this direct tone of trying to create a subject that has the direct RACIAL tone. I don't understand unless you just flat out say you are a racist. Are you? If so, why use this board? If not can you choose other words to convey what you want to say? Peace!
Robert,
I agree. It's about quality of life for the players, not jsut the money, and the ATP tour is detroying every player's life. I was just reading another blog entry on professional tennis inuries and have to agree strongly their needs to be an off season.

In a recent post, Wertheim makes an important point about the heavy ATP scheduling .............. fan burnout or overexposure. After the US Open, we are subjected to the Peoria Open and the Cambodia Challenge. Have you seen the stands as you watch on ESPN II at 4AM? At best they are about 30% full. Fans need a rest too, to become envigorated again.

The reason some of the matches are on at 4am is because they are played in other countries.
