NHL  > General NHL  > Skill players who are also good fighters
October 8, 2008, 04:03 PM
In the new issue of SI, Michael Farber writes about the resurgence of fighting and how even though skill and speed have been emphasized since the lockout, winning teams still feel they need an intimidator, an enforcer, a goon, a bodyguard -- pick your term -- preferably someone who also brings a little skill to the mix. It got us to thinking about the players who have the highest level of skill (skating, scoring, passing, checking, shotblocking) but can also dish it out with their fists if they have to. We're talking about guys like Jarome Iginla, Joe Thornton, Zdeno Chara and even Vincent Lecavalier, an elite scorer who does not exactly harken back to the days of Wayne "Hold on for dear life until Semenko gets here" Gretzky or Mike "Hit 'em with your handbag" Bossy (taunt courtesy of, who else, New York Rangers fans). So who belongs on your list?
